In honor of Craig Counsell's base hit -- "The Chicken Runs at Midnight"

[DHonks]

I've done a couple google searches and can't find the original story that retraces the story. I thought my girlfriend (a novice with baseball) might find it interesting after she was interested in the McGehee--Clayton story. I see a Kurkijan article in 2010, but I thought the original story was written about a decade ago. Can you please help find it? Edited August 6, 2011 by Anonymous

Here is the most comprehensive one I could find that was written prior to the Kurkjian article, but it's surely not the original.

EDIT: found a news article from 10/23/97 via Google News. That's gotta be damn near the original.

EDIT2: and just like that, "the chicken" gets a hit.

The audio quality may need a bit of tweaking on your PC, but get your tissues out --

This really is an amazingly touching story every time I hear it. Makes me kinda miss Craig's old stance.

I first heard this at my daughter's sports banquet a few years ago. Yes, get the tissues out . . .
