I also asked Melvin why right-hander Mark Rogers had not taken his last turn at Class A Brevard County. Rogers, coming off two shoulder surgeries, pitched shutout ball for 5 1/3 innings in his first two outings but missed his last turn.

Melvin said Rogers banged his shoulder into the wall shagging balls during pre-game batting practice. In fact, Melvin was there, watching Brevard County last week when it happened. Melvin said Rogers did not damage the repaired shoulder but bruised it, so the decision was made to skip a turn.

"It had some tenderness in the shoulder," said Melvin. "He's going to be OK. He's going to pitch in the next few days. He was warming up (for his next start) but the shoulder was sore. It's just bruised."

Melvin also said the Brewers are still waiting for the MRI results on centerfield prospect Lorenzo Cain, who injured his left knee trying to make a diving catch for Class AA Huntsville on Thursday. Cain came to Milwaukee to be examined by team physician William Raasch and have the MRI. The original fear was a torn medial collateral ligament.

"There's nothing we can do about the timing," said Melvin, who indicated Cain might be in the conversation to make the club next year. "He was making strides."

Good news on Rogers especially.

Great news on Rogers. Not that he got hurt, but after two shoulder surgeries and misses two years, you couldn't help but expect the worst.

Well that's a good bit of news in an otherwise dreary pitching day on the farm.
