you can pick them up on craigslist for dirt cheap, however, some of them probably won't work...

Use the ELECTRONICS catagory, and either type in VCR or VHS

 

There are almost always several to pick from in Appleton/Green Bay.

Make a run to a few thrift stores. I haven't been going much lately but I know I used to see them there all time. Typically for 3-8 bucks.

Goodwill even has a place in-store to try them out. I got one to play old Disney movies for my kids for $5.
