Brewers Minor League Link Report (7/15): OF Jose Anderson is Cementing High-End Prospect Status Powering DSL Dos to Victory

    Joseph Zarr

With the MLB All Star festivities underway and full-season affiliates at rest until Friday, we Minor League aficionados are left clinging to the MLB draft and our DSL Cerveceros. It's July - there is always Brewers baseball. The DSL Uno, winners of nine straight, came into a highly competitive tilt with the also very good Cleveland Goryl. The Crew Uno would sadly not achieve double digits on the win streak losing their one-run lead in the late innings in a loss. The DSL Dos, however, pulled out an important 'W' in what has been a temporary struggle of late. Let's get into the report!

Final: DSL Cleveland Goryl 8, DSL Brewers #1 5

Trailing 3-1, the Cerveceros Uno plated a three-run seventh frame to grab a brief 4-3 lead. CF Engel Paulino started the brief festivities with a lead-off triple - he scored on a wild pitch in the next AB. A walk apiece for C Kevin Garcia and 1B Joandrew Pena , a force out at second base, and a successful double steal scored the tying run. SS Luis Pena scored the go-ahead run with a free pass himself - this go-ahead inning certainly had some 'DSL Special' on the menu! Unfortunately, this same seventh inning rally appears to have ended in a line out double play to shortstop. Surely, the Crew Uno left their half feeling more runs could have been had. This 4-3 lead was very short-lived as the Goryl plated two runs of their own and never looked back in the bottom of the seventh. It appears a one-out ground ball to talented INF Jesus Made resulted in a fielding error. The tying run scored, but, perhaps more importantly, runners were on the corners with only one down. Regardless, 17-year-old Mexican LHP Victor Garcia struggled a bit through his 2 IP - 1 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 1 K, 4 R (2 earned). Garcia took the loss as he fell to 0-3 on his summer. Familiar names did indeed put up meaningful knocks in the box score - 3B Jesus Made went 2-for-5 with an RBI and 1 K; SS Luis Pena hit his fourth triple of his season in a 1-for-4, 1 BB outing; and LF Juan Ortuno hit his sixth double of his summer in a 1-for-4, 1 K day at the plate. Unfortunately, in the end, the Crew Uno were unable to take the victory on the heels of RHP Ranwell Smith's 3 IP of scoreless 3 H, 1 BB relief. The Crew Uno fell to 19-9 overall.

Final: DSL Brewers #2 6, DSL Padres Gold 2

As this contest progressed, CF Jose Anderson had me running into the DSL Brewers history books to consider what we've witnessed so far through July 15th. Thankfully, before I got to deep in the muck, our very own @Smichaelis9saved me with a tweet:

It's quite obvious Anderson is making quite a name for himself within the Brewers prospect depth chart(s). He also hit an RBI single in a 2-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 HR day. He now has 27 RBI on the summer. Incredible stuff. Second year player, LF Pedro Tovar, continued to make his mark as well in a 2-for-4 day with 2 R and 1 RBI. RF Frandy Lafond also continued to impress, albeit in a limited 36 AB sample overall, in a 1-for-4 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB outing. Lafond also improved his season BB:K ratio improve to 8:5 overall. You love to see it. On the pitching side of things, the DSL Crew Dos staff worked around 11 BB, 1 Balk, a HBP, and two WP - phew. They scattered a mere three hits and struck out eight in the process of staving off their charitable ways. 19-year-old RHP Fabian Reyes ultimately picked up the 'W' with his 2 1/3 IP of 0 H, 3 BB, 3 K work. He moved to 2-0 on his season while the DSL Crew Dos bumped back above 0.500 again and now sit at 15-14 overall.

Tomorrow all rookie ball clubs will be back at it - the ACL Crew will be playing in the desert air throughout the evening hours. At first glance, if we are solely basing chances on records, it certainly appears all three ball clubs have a good shot at pulling out some more victories. My main question remains: can the ACL Crew finally get to five games under 0.500?
