Breakdown / Highlights
Chad Patrick and the Brewers opened the weeklong homestand against the Pirates, and unfortunately for Patrick, his recent struggles persisted. The Brewers' rookie surrendered nine hits and four runs in 5.0 innings of work, while on the other side, the NL Central bottom feeders strung together a bullpen day, using five pitchers to hold the red-hot Brewers offense to only four runs of their own. A Isiah Kiner-Falefa triple in the sixth off of Nick Mears earned the Pirates their fifth and deciding run, enabling them to take game one 5-4.
Milwaukee bounced back on Tuesday, with Freddy Peralta on the mound. It was the Brewers' bottom of the order, though, that put the pressure on early, with Joey Ortiz smacking two homers and Caleb Durbin adding one of his own in the eventual 9-3 win.
They’d take the series the next day and do it in front of a sellout crowd. Paul Skenes and Jacob Misiorowski were the headliners, and with the national media highlighting American Family Field on a Wednesday afternoon, the Miz won round one. He tossed five innings of two-hit, eight-strikeout, scoreless baseball, while Skenes was victimized with a four-run second inning, dooming his squad to a 4-2 loss.
After a day off on Thursday, the hapless Rockies came into town, and Milwaukee took care of business. Quinn Priester’s start on Saturday was certainly the highlight, pitching seven innings of one-hit, no-run ball, striking out a career-high 11 batters in a 5-0 win. An extra-inning loss followed on Sunday, giving the Brewers a four win week.
