Breakdown
The Brewers began their week in Miami, taking on the Marlins. In the first game of the set, starter Joe Ross left the game after one inning due to injury. The bullpen filled in admirably, but Marlins starter Ryan Weathers held the Brewers to just one earned run, leading his team to a 3-2 win. Milwaukee took game two behind Robert Gasser, who limited the damage through six innings despite surrendering 10 hits. William Contreras and Christian Yelich each drove in multiple runs in the game, resulting in a 7-5 Milwaukee victory.
Alas, in the rubber match Wednesday, the bats went cold. Miami starter Jesús Luzardo had a career-high eight scoreless innings, backed by a first-inning homer from Jazz Chisholm, and Miami won 1-0. Freddy Peralta had a strong start, but was saddled with the loss despite seven innings of one-run ball.
The team bounced back over the weekend in Boston, though. The league’s second-best pitching staff had trouble limiting the Brewers' bats in games one and two. Lefty Jared Koenig started two games as the opener, becoming the first Brewer since Zack Greinke to do so. Bryse Wilson and Colin Rea each pitched well in the piggyback role, and the offense found more success than they did in Miami. Sunday saw the Red Sox pitch on the level they've been used to all year, with Tanner Houck only allowing one run in the Brewers 2-1 loss.
The Brewers will be home all of next week, for two sets against the respective Chicago teams. It is worth noting the Brewers have been better on the road this year. They'll look to find success against two teams that are struggling right now.
