1. As has been mentioned, if a player has a condition that requires a banned substance, they can apply for an exemption through MLB. And if Braun had testicular cancer, you better believe he would have mentioned it the second this report came out. No, unfortunately, his excuse is going to be a lot weaker than that.
2.
I'll one up you and ask that our super defensive SS can also handle half of the CF duties, enabling us to play a lesser defensive CF with an awesome stick like Kotsay there most of the time. Awesome stick...Kotsay...does not compute...
3. Start your best pitchers when you can, worry about the rest later.
4. Gallardo is just as good as Carpenter at this point in both of their careers, why wouldn't you start him? Gallardo's going on full rest tonight, I don't see how that's a point in favor of starting him tomorrow against Lohse. As for Carpenter pitching lights out? Yeah, he's been stellar the last month or so in pitching against the Marlins, Pirates, Cubs, Astros, and Dodgers. And Philly and Milwaukee, of course, the two better offenses he's seen. Still, just look at his game log. In the last two months of the season, he got blasted by the Pirates twice, by the Reds once, by our very own Brewers once, and he had several games where he was quite mediocre. He's capable of a great performance, yeah. But let's not pretend that he's Roy Halladay or something. This guy can be had, and you really shouldn't be scheduling your pitching rotation around when you face him.
5. Didn't BA pretty much say that the Brewers were going to have the early game? Not that he has the final say or anything, but I would think he might have some inside info.
6. So Loge Outfield tickets are like $125 on Stubhub right now for Game 1 NLDS. Do you think those prices will go down at all? In all likelihood I'll only be able to make it to one game this postseason, and so I want to get good seats and I'm willing to pay a healthy premium. What kind of price range/section should I be looking at? Thanks.
7.
If he's not above Rivas, that would be a mistake. He's outperformed Rivas significantly, the only reason Rivas would remain above him is if he had clearly better "stuff." He doesn't. And there's no difference in age, not really. Rivas will be turning 26 soon.
8. Is it just me or has Roenicke been running quite a few hit-and-runs with the pitcher at the plate? I don't think many of them worked. It might be wise to revise that strategy.
9. Nyjer's playing over his head, but 3B and SS should be easy to upgrade over their negative WAR so far this year (whether they will be or not is another question). So that coupled with the stellar platoon in CF should be able to offset Fielder's departure. Especially if Gamel is able to perform at least decently.
10. I want Green called up as much as everyone else, but to replace McGehee, not Weeks. I can't say that I've seen Green in the field, but I can infer easily enough that he's not a very good 2B. So to say that he should replace Weeks, I would have to disagree with that.
11. Melvin also has been monitoring players at Class AAA Nashville such as first baseman?/?third baseman Mat Gamel and third baseman Taylor Green, both of whom are having big years. But, barring injury, he considers them to be likely September call-up material. "We've looked at Taylor Green," said Melvin. "And I still consider Gamel a good hitter even though he struggled (.115) when he was up here. "Our goal is to help Casey get going. He has looked better lately. Then, in September, we can add to the roster." http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/126151758.html Can't say that this is surprising, but it's somewhat upsetting. Edit: And according to Tom H., Shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and third baseman Casey McGehee have been liabilities, offensively and defensively, for much of the season though both have swung the bats better recently. Um, no Tom. That may be true of Betancourt but it definitely is not true with respect to McGehee. And both continue to be liabilities defensively.
12. Kennedy is over 100 pitches. Hopefully the Brewers can get him out of here after this inning. Anyone has to be better than him at this point.
13. It looks fairly amusing, although I also spotted a few cringe-inducing scenes in that trailer. Most glaringly, the scene in which Pitt whips a chair dramatically (in slow-motion?) down a hallway. We'll see. And I would refute those who say that Sorkin can do no wrong. Often times his shows/movies walk the dangerous line of being didactic/preachy and sometimes he falls down on the wrong side of that line. I would also have more confidence if an auteur like David Fincher were directing the movie, rather than Bennett Miller, who directed Capote. Which, in my opinion, was incredibly overrated. I also wonder what this movie is going to be about. Yes, Beane helped to usher in a new era of baseball analysis, but ultimately his teams never succeeded in the playoffs. Saber-folks will say that playoffs are just a random crap-shoot. They will also say that the A's failure to win a championship does little to nullify the method used by the organization to achieve their regular-season success. Both statements can definitely be argued. Yet the point still stands that the A's never won a championship, which is, of course, the entire point of this whole baseball thing. And as far as a movie narrative goes, there is no inherently dramatic climax. Which is fine, as long as the movie is set to focus on Beane's failures as well as his successes. Perhaps a good closing shot would be to see Beane watching as the Red Sox, who he spurned previously, win the World Series. Not only win the World Series, but winning it in large part due to some of the methods which he helped to usher in.
