Aramis Ramirez: Good off speed hitter because he has lots of RBIs

Listening to the White Sox/Cubs game on the Score and Steve Stone (who's a WS broadcaster for those that don't know) said Aramis Ramirez is a good off speed hitter because he has a lot of RBI - meaning he hits the ball the other way a lot.

Now, I guess hitting the ball the other way shows you can hit off speed stuff, but does that really have anything to do with how many RBI you have?

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

YES! But don't ask him to provide an explanation. You just don't understand, because you never played! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

good point! my buddy works at the score with Stoney and when i met him for the first time i couldn't get a word in edgewise. he told me the brewers bullpen would stink this year - as much as he respects doug melvin - and all i could come back with was that ramirez was lazy. he didn't disagree.

It definitely has nothing to do with the fact that there are runners on base when he hits. Couldn't be. But then again I never played so don't ask me.

Well now you're making sense! You know these stupid fans think they know stuff about baseball? It's hilarious!

Don't you usually go the other way with fastballs?

That was my thought as well. People tend to pull off-speed pitches because you are out in front of them.

I'm all confused now. Bill Schroeder harps on everything going to the opposite field. I sometimes envision him in the booth being pissed off when Braun jacks a homer to left field.

Me too, but I envision him being pissed because Braun relied on a homer.

Ramirez gets lots of RBI's because he bats 4th and he's a really good hitter.

It's still hard to believe the Pirates traded him for Bobby Hill.

I'd say that it's hard to believe he was traded for Bobby Hill, not that the Pirates were the team that gave him away. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
