Not really sure why they would sign this. The only plus I see is the option at the end. It actually looks like they just moved some money up a few years and really didn't save any money.

I'm not a big fan of Span but the deal wasn't that big so I guess it is fine. I think he'll be stretched defensively trying to play CF and if you take some of that BABIP away he is a pretty pedestrian hitter so he needs to improve to have much value though he takes his walks so hard for him to have negative value. He is young so no reason he can't improve obviously.

Pretty sure they did it so they have payroll certainty so they can give Mauer the bank.
