RIP Ryan Freel

Read on his Wikipedia page during his playing career he would talk to a voice he said was in his head. Freel, along with teammates and coaches, had fun with it and came up with a name for his voice. Don't know how true any of that is but seems like the guy was a little off for a while.

Not sure why instead of "having fun with it" they didn't have him talk to a psychologist or someone that might be able to help out? Obviously have no idea how severe it was, but if the team recognized it and thought felt it was appropriate for him to see someone, this thread wouldn't exist. Sad.

First of all it's quite possible they did do just that. Second of all, from what I recall it was sort of an alter ego he would use to fire himself up - ala Tony Plush. No reason to blame anyone at all for this turn of events.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I enjoyed watching him play, and seemed to be a thorn in the Brewers' side. This is a tough time of year for a family member to lose one of their own (there's never a 'good' time). I have many thoughts about those who commit suicide, but that's for another forum. Hopefully his family can find some peace in the future.
