Why is that not an out when Santana slipped down the stairs but if a defender catches a ball and ends up in the lap of a fan in the front row it is an out?

More than anything this organization needs to recalibrate its philosophy of hitting. Pitcher in trouble?swing at first pitch. Men on base? Take pitches and strike out looking. Need contact? Swing for the fences. They just don't seem to know the game.
