The 2-win, 3-loss night puts our squads at a combined 4-9 this week, collectively three games below .500 on the season. The Mudcats were actually no-hit in the 7-inning opening game of their doubleheader before exacting revenge in their nightcap.

Thursday’s Game Balls go to Nate Peterson, Brian Navaretto, Justin Jarvis, Bennett Sousa and Robert Moore, with honorable mentions to Eric Brown Jr. and Skye Bolt.

    Final: Nashville 8, Durham 4

Trailing most of the game, C Brian Navaretto (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs) came through to double in two runs to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the 7th inning, then returned in the 8th inning to double in two more for a 7-3 lead.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • LHP Bennett Sousa (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Skye Bolt (2-for-3, walk, RBI) combined for a great escape, with Sousa entering in relief of a struggling LHP Clayton Andrews to face a bases loaded and nobody out situation while clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning. A single was limited to one run via a Bolt assist to nab a runner at home, before Sousa retired the next five batters, four via strikeout.
    • Returning from a nearly 3-week absence, RHP Robert Stock (1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) got the brief start. LHP Ethan Small (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) walked the first two batters he faced (allowing one inherited runner to score) before settling in to give the team some sorely-needed innings.
    • 2B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-3, 2 doubles, walk, RBI) also had a nice game, while right fielder Monte Harrison exited early via ejection after striking out in his two at-bats.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Robert Gasser (5.17 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 in 31 1/3 IP) is scheduled to start the fourth game of the series, trying to get back on track after two difficult starts.

    Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Chattanooga 2, Biloxi 0
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Pitching Strikes Out 13 in 2-0 Loss to Lookouts

Another day, another 2-0 shutout loss for our beloved Shuckers. The team went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven. Once again, Biloxi’s hurlers deserved better, as the team fell to a fifth straight defeat.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • RHP Justin Jarvis (6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 9 Ks) took his second loss of the year, but was solid once again in throwing 95 pitches over six innings.
    • Biloxi managed just three hits in the game, but at least 1B Zavier Warren and center fielder Jackson Chourio each doubled to show a glimpse of potency. Each went 1-for-4 with a strikeout, as the team K’d 11 times.
    • LHP Nick Bennett (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) was solid in relief, retiring all six batters he faced. C Jeferson Quero (1-for-4) also threw out Chattanooga’s only attempted basestealer, while the Lookouts’ catcher matched the feat by throwing out 3B Tyler Black (0-for-2, walk, HBP).

Friday’s outlook: RHP Tobias Myers (3.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 12.6 K/9 in 36 1/3 IP) gets the next crack at ending Biloxi’s losing skid, but the offense needs to score!

    Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: Quad Cities 7, Wisconsin 5
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Bandits Get Late, Two-Out Runs to Beat Wisconsin

For the second game in a row, the Timber Rattlers could not keep up with Quad Cities, who came through with clutch hits to score three runs in the final three innings.

SS Eric Brown Jr. (2-for-4, 2 doubles, walk, SB) and 2B Robert Moore (2-for-5, double, 3 RBIs) had 2-out hits in the 9th inning to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of C Matt Wood (2-for-5, triple), but he flied out to end it.

Check out the video highlights as compiled by the Wisconsin’s excellent media team, including this smooth defensive play from Brown and Moore:

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • RHP Alexander Cornielle (5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 3 Ks) didn’t allow a hit in the first three innings as Wisconsin built a 2-0 lead, but then gave up four consecutive hits in the top of the fourth inning, the last a 2-run homer to fall behind 4-2.
    • Moore is steadily heating up, doubling in two runs to tie the game in the 5th inning, which was part of a 3-RBI night for him. 3B Eduardo Garcia (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI, SB) also continued his topsy-turvy season, crushing his 3rd homer of the year and stealing a base. Unfortunately, outfielders Joe Gray Jr. and Je’Von Ward weren’t able to match their contributions, going a combined 0-for-8 with five strikeouts.
    • RHP Max Lazar (2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) took the loss despite quality work, while RHP Bo Bowman conceded two runs in the 9th inning to make the comeback much more difficult.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Joseph Hernandez (3.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 31 2/3 IP) is the expected starter, with the team needing a win to claw back to 1-3 in their series.

    Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes
Game One Final: Kannapolis 7, Carolina 0
    Box Score / Game Log
Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina No-Hit by McCullough in Kannapolis

Game Two Final: Carolina 5, Kannapolis 3
    Box Score / Game Log
Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Bounce Back to Beat Ballers 5-3

Carolina has been carrying the organization this week, so they can be forgiven for saving their energy for the second game (technically a “home” game, making up for an earlier rainout) of Thursday’s doubleheader.

After being no-hit by Kannapolis’ 23-year old Connor McCullough (who faced just one batter over the minimum) in the opening game, LHP Nate Peterson (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) steadied the ship to earn the win in the nightcap.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • 3B Jadher Areinamo and 2B Jheremy Vargas each collected two singles in the late game, but getting runs across was a team effort: DH/1B Jesus Parra RBI single, left fielder Jace Avina RBI hit-by-pitch, 1B Jesus Chirinos sac fly, wild pitches to score Areinamo and Vargas.
    • With the tying runs on base against RHP Jeison Pena in the top of the 7th inning, RHP Shane Smith was called into action to get the final out, striking out dangerous Jacob Burke, thus earning Smith his third save of 2023.
    • It was death by a thousand cuts for RHP Aidan Maldonado (2 1/3 IP, 7 R (6 ER), 11 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 3 WPs), against whom every ball seemed to find its way through for a hit in the first game. His season ERA balloons to 6.20, but he only conceded one extra base hit and one walk against 20 hitters.

Friday’s outlook: Exciting 21-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2.45 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 15.3 K/9 in 14 2/3 IP) aims to build on a terrific last start, as Carolina looks for a 4-1 series lead.
