Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Split Sunday Twin Bill With Saints

Nashville dominated both ends of the doubleheader, but ended up splitting the day and the series due to one bad inning in the opener.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • RHP Caleb Boushley (from Hortonville!) continues to show that his initial 2023 struggles were a fluke of chaotic scheduling. He has a 2.21 ERA over his last four starts, striking out more than usual (18 in 20 1/3 IP).
    • The organization may be facing a difficult decision on Rule 5 selection RHP Gus Varland, who hasn’t looked right in five minor league rehab appearances (11.12 ERA, and took the loss in the opening game).
    • While INF Patrick Dorrian did the major damage (grand slam) and C Brent Diaz reminded us that everyone is a prospect (1.571 OPS in two games played), INF Abraham Toro continues to make his case for promotion (3-for-6, 3 doubles, walk; 26-game on-base streak).

Next week’s outlook: Nashville (17-15) hosts Braves’ affiliate Gwinnett (12-20) this week. Expect LHP Thomas Pannone to start the opening game.

    Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Biloxi 15, Montgomery 8
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Set Season-High with 15 Runs, Strike Out 16 to Split Series

Is the Southern League a hitters’ league now? Biloxi and Montgomery combined for 23 runs on 28 hits in the finale, with the Shuckers coming back from a 6-3 deficit to win and even the series 3-3.

Thank you to the Biloxi media team for generating so many video highlights on the road.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • 22-year old 3B Tyler Black is doing everything he can to earn a promotion to AAA - 3-for-6 with a double and stolen base (league-leading 17th!) to lift his OPS to .980.
    • Most of the pitching lines were a mess in this game, but RHPs James Meeker and Cam Robinson were immune (combined 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks). The team also struck out 16 Biscuits, including 8 by starting RHP Christian Mejias (3 2/3 IP, 6 ER).
    • OF Joe Gray Jr.’s post-promotion misery reached its peak with a ground-ball double play ending a 3rd inning rally to drop him to 0-for-19 in AA with 9 Ks. However, he bounced back with a first pitch, 2-run double in the 6-run 5th inning.

Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (15-12) returns home to face Angels’ affiliate Rocket City (14-13) this week. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez is the scheduled starter for the opening game.

    Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Peoria 2, Wisconsin 1
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Drop Duel with Chiefs

Since the minor leagues shifted to 6-game series, sweeps are quite rare and Wisconsin was unfortunately on the wrong end of this one. And to a Cardinals affiliate, no less.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • Don’t blame the pitching staff, as RHPs Joseph Hernandez (4 IP, 2 ER), Edwin Jimenez (3 IP, 0 R) and Bo Bowman (1 IP, 0 ER) combined on a 4-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts
    • C Darrien Miller also did his part to give the team opportunities, doubling and taking third base on a wild pitch with nobody out in the 7th inning (stranded) and singling with two outs in the 9th inning. His .214 average and .631 OPS are suppressed by a .250 BABIP.
    • The Timber Rattlers have now lost 11 of 12 games and sit dead last in the 12-team Midwest League in most offensive categories (3.73 runs/game, .209 AVG, .648 OPS).

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (8-18) comes home to lick its wounds, hosting Cubs’ affiliate South Bend (15-12) this week. RHP Cameron Wagoner is slated to start on Tuesday.

    Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Carolina 7, Delmarva 3
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Mudcats to Series Victory

The Mudcats continue to win and shine under Manager Victor Estevez despite having the youngest lineup and 4th-youngest pitching staff in the 12-team Carolina League. The 4-2 series win gives them three consecutive series victories.

    Three Quick Strikes:

    • RHP Jacob Misiorowski has never looked better, producing his highest pitch (52), innings (3 2/3) and strikeout (8) totals, with no runs, one hit and one walk.
    • If this was 22-year old C Matt Wood’s last game before a deserved move to High-A, he made the most of it: 2-run single for the team’s 2-0 lead. Walked to lead off the 9th inning, scoring the winning run in what turned out to be a 5-run frame. He also threw out the only attempted basestealer.
    • RHP Jeison Peña’s early season hasn’t gone as planned (6.00 ERA), but he came through in a big spot here, entering with 2-on, 1-out with the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, getting a full-count strikeout and full-count fly out to escape. This was his fourth win of 2023.

Next week’s outlook: the Mudcats (15-10) will be home this week, taking on Nationals’ affiliate Fredericksburg (8-17). The opening game starter is unclear, given injuries to RHPs Quinton Low and Yujanyer Herrera.

We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report! Enjoy the Monday travel day, before action heats up again on Tuesday.
