Brewers Minor League Link Report (7/18): Well, At Least the Big-League Team Won

The Brewers affiliates were 0-6 on Saturday, outscored 49-17, think of it as a combined NFL blowout score. Biloxi Starting RHP Jaron DeBerry exited early (injury, perhaps illness, video was inconclusive). It wasn't a good day.

Perhaps evident of a lopsided loss, we won't be able to accentuate a whole lot of positive as is our Link Report norm.

The summary's Tyler Black notes are fine and all, but there's been so much "been there, done that" on his journey and his no-options-for-2027 sullies whatever hope remained there.

The Carlos Rodriguez saga is likewise not heading for a happy ending, at least with the Brewers. Another final option year member of the 40-man roster, the best the front office could hope for now is a throw-in sweetening of the pot on a deadline deal, but efforts like Saturday night's in a non-descript relief role won't help.

Newcomer southpaw Colton Gordon struck out five in five innings (only one walk) in his Milwaukee organization debut. Each of the run-scoring Kjerstad, Tromp and Fabian knocks all left the bat at a minimum of 97.2 MPH (we don't see the 104.8 MPH triple he allowed to begin the fateful 4th).  

Jett Williams, still not on the seven-day IL with his wrist injury, but still idle since July 7th.

Impressive blast for Wilken, but 0-for-14 since his prior base hit, as the summary noted. Do we kind of acknowledge the Brocket's with a shrug?

We'll throw in a garbage time Luis Matos RBI single just for the token "accentuate the positive" vibe.

Notice how those responsible for placing the titles on these affiliate write-ups are often at their creative best on "down" nights.

If your name was Blake Burke, Dylan O'Rae, Josiah Ragsdale, Matthew Wood or Jack Seppings, your bottom-line stats page had a decent-to-good night.

You know it's not a fun evening when consecutive Link Report opponents make use of a multi-box to get their offensive outburst points across.

Jaron DeBerry allowed a three-run bomb in the first (be prepared, the Pensacola call is LOUD), and then DeBerry's second inning began HBP, soft infield single, then the single to center you see in the first of the three clips in the montage above. Notice that the other highlights above are with a lefty on the mound. That's 21-year-old Anthony Flores, who did not fare well during his brief outing. But more importantly, DeBerry's DeParture (wordplay there I would have preferred not to type) was not traditional. There's simply no clear indication as to why DeBerry essentially pulled himself by what he revealed in talking with management and training staff on the mound, but he fist-bumped his teammates on the way out. Hoping perhaps this was more illness-than-injury related?

Not to throw more cold water on the night, but Mike Boeve has not played in either game since play resumed this week. Boeve is batting .341 in July after posting an OPS of .933 in June. It could be nothing more than attending to a personal matter, just pointing it out as something to monitor.

Andrew Fischer singled in five at-bat's, three of them ended in K's (33.7% on the season, 34.7% at the AA level). Consistently fascinating for Mr. 1.113 OPS in 2026!

Kudos to airing (OK, that pun was indeed intended) on the side of caution, Wisconsin front office.

That bottom of the first inning, well documented in the summary, fits into the night's exasperating theme.

Royals appear to have a good one two-to-three years away:

Wisconsin plunked the Quad Cities first baseman three times - once by Dubanewicz, twice by Jason Woodward, who is still trying to get his footing in 2026.

Timber Rattlers still sit atop the 2nd half Midwest League standings. We'll see if the cancelled game comes into play at season's end.

Late Rally Lifts Hickory Past Wilson - Warbirds hit three home runs in loss

The one bright spot accounting for all the Warbird scoring - notice the Hickory staff doesn't quite have the follow-the-ball thing down pat on home runs -

Neither RHP Jarrette Bonet nor LHP Joey Broughton were badly roughed up in their respective outings, it's just neither was effective enough in the end.

Handelfry Encarnacion on base four times with a double and three walks but is only 19-of-30 in stolen base attempts.

Jose Anderson 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as his K percentage reaches 39%.

This is what we wrote on the early portion of Monday's game -

"Play was halted with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd in Maryvale. The Brewers have a 3-0 lead with men on 1st and 3rd base and first baseman Jonathan Rangel at the plate.

Rehabbing LHP JD Thompson, who had not pitched with Wisconsin since leaving his June 2nd start early, threw two scoreless innings, inducing ground ball outs to the first four batters he faced. He ended the 2nd inning with a strikeout (on an automatic strike), a single and a lineout.

RHP Caleb Nieman stranded two in the 3rd.

The A-Crew patched together a two-out rally to plate a run in the 2nd and grab the lead - a Rangel walk, Leonard Rijo ground ball single to right, moving Rangel to 3rd, and Engel Paulino double on a pop up to apparent no-man's land behind first base. Catcher Freider Rojas fanned leaving two in scoring position.

In the Maryvale 3rd, Brailyn Antunez singled with one out, followed by a Kenny Fenelon hit-by-pitch. Gerlyn Payano, acting as the DH in this game, doubled to center scoring Antunez but Fenelon was thrown out at third base for the second out. A wild pitch moved Payano to third base and shortstop CJ Hughes walked before the game was called due to rare Arizona rain."

As that link will show, it was a comedy of errors that allowed the game to be tied by the Dodgers in the 7th, and as he was for that inning, RHP Hayden Vucinovich was on the mound for the blow-up 10th. Can't fault Vucinovich fully for the first frame, but the other was much of his own doing, though only one of the seven runs total he allowed was earned.

Game began in Maryvale, ended at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, neither provided Statcast data.

I had titled our daily thread on the Minor League Forum Saturday "DeBerry and Dubanewicz Got Da Goods". Starting to think I shouldn't have done that.

Two measly hits for the A-Crew, a Brailyn Antunez double and a Moises Polanco single. They hit back-to-back in the order (Antunez as the DH), but their base hits came in separate innings, thus the shutout.

Three Brewers reached by free pass (two walks, one HBP). Twelve Brewers struck out, the bottom four in the order 0-for-10 fanning eight times.

• Team RISP: 0-for-4.
• Team LOB: 4.

Kind of a perfect way to cap this Link Report.

We will note there was another oddity here. The day's box scores will show that JD Thompson started both contests, gotta love suspended game magic! His combined line: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K.

Sunday's action has Wisconsin and Wilson with 1:00 PM Central start times, while Nashville and Biloxi wrap up their respective three-game home series in the early evening. The Dominican Summer League plays its All-Star Game; we'll have info on that in our daily thread pinned to the top of our Minor League Forum.
