Brewers Minor League Link Report (8/2): Miller’s Two-Run Double Delivers Sole Sunday Victory

Darrien Miller’s clutch hit gave Nashville a Sunday win. Jesus Made homered and Marco Dinges caught, but Biloxi was blown out. Wisconsin dropped an extra inning contest, while Wilson was rained out.

For the week, Wisconsin (4-2) and Wilson (3-2) were series winners, Nashville (3-3) managed a draw and Biloxi (2-4) came up short.

Seeking their 3rd consecutive win to earn a 3-3 draw in this week’s series, the Sounds grabs leads in the 3rd, 5th and 8th innings to get the job done.

After Charlotte briefly took the lead with a two-run top of the 8th inning against rehabbing RHP Joel Kuhnel (2/3 IP, HR, 2 doubles), OF Akil Baddoo started the rally with an infield single and C Darrien Miller (1-for-3, walk, 2 RBIs) delivered a two-out, two-run double to restore Nashville’s lead.

RHPs Brett Wichrowski (3 IP, 0 R, 3 Ks) and Gerson Garabito (3 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 Ks) were in solid form, combining to cover 6 2/3 innings and only allow one run.

The left side of the infield of 3B Brock Wilken (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI) and SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-4, HR, RBI) were key contributors to Nashville’s victory.

Sounds’ Extras:

• Kudos to RHP Blake Holub for stranding two baserunners inherited from Garabito and RHP Will Childers for working around his three ninth inning walks to close out the victory with a 5-4-3 ground ball double play.
• 1B Luke Adams (1-for-3, walk) and OF Tyler Black (1-for-2, walk, sac fly) each reached base twice as the Sounds out-hit the Knights 10-5.

Next week’s outlook: Nashville hit the road, but remain in Tennessee as they battle Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis for six games this week.

Southern League debuts for RHPs Chandler Welch (2 IP, 6 R, 0 Ks) and Tanner Perry (2 1/3 IP, 9 R (8 ER), 4 Ks) sadly didn’t go well on Sunday, as they combined to allow 15 runs (14 earned) in the middle innings to see a 3-3 tie ultimately turn into a 20-3 rout.

Although RHP Stiven Cruz (2 IP, 3 R, 2 Ks) allowed two first inning homers in a rare spot start (and after throwing 42 pitches three days earlier), SS Jesus Made (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) had re-set the contest with this two-run blast in the 3rd inning.

After dealing with a shoulder impingement, C Marco Dinges played behind the plate for the first time since May 5, so we’ll have to forgive the 0-for-5 caught stealing output. Dinges (1-for-2, double, RBI) exited after five innings, causing a bit of online excitement with the MLB trade deadline on Monday, August 3, but the team was simply easing him back in: 

OF Josh Adamczewski kept up his solid work (2-for-2, double, 2 walks), while DH Blake Burke singled, walked and stole his 26th(!) base.

Shuckers’ Extras:

• RHP Ryan Birchard (1 K) and INF Jheremy Vargas produced the cleanest pitching lines with a scoreless inning each.
• Despite being out-hit 14-6, credit Shuckers’ batters with only striking out four times.

Next week’s outlook: Biloxi head over to Columbus, Georgia to battle the Braves’ affiliate over a 6-game series, commencing on Tuesday evening.

As you’ve seen read, seen and heard from the above links, a sterling nine-inning pitching performance unfortunately went for naught as big opportunities in the bottom of the 9th and 10th innings weren’t converted.

Huge credit to stating RHP Ethan Dorchies (6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and relievers LHP Bjorn Johnson, RHP Jason Woodward and RHP Quinton Low for limiting the Lugnuts to one run on four hits through nine innings.

An OF Tyler Rodriguez one-out single in the 9th inning was followed by two walks to set the stage for a possible walk-off win, but two ground ball outs (the first a force out at home) erased that chance. Low continued into the 10th inning, allowing the Manfred Man across for a 2-1 deficit and loading the bases. He got ahead in the count 0-2 to nearly escape, but a back-breaking three-run triple appeared to put the game out of reach.

The resilient Timber Rattlers weren’t done though, putting the first four runners aboard in the bottom of the 10th inning, highlighted by OF Luis Castillo’s two-run double, to make it a 5-4 game with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out. Unfortunately a strikeout and line out double play ended the game.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• Out-hitting Lansing 10-7 wasn’t quite enough, as Wisconsin stranded 11 baserunners.
• 2B Daniel Dickinson (2-for-3, walk, HBP) reached base four times, while 3B Eric Bitonti (2-for-4, double, walk) and Castillo (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) joined him with multi-hit games.

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin head south to take on Marlins’ affiliate Beloit in a six-game series, with LHP Wande Torres scheduled to start the series opener on Tuesday.

Rain Out: Fredericksburg at Wilson

Via the Warbirds’ website, rainout details: Wilson, Fredericksburg Series Finale Postponed

The Warbirds and Nationals intend to make up this game in a doubleheader in Fredericksburg on September 3rd, by which point both teams’ lineups may include some recent draft picks.

Next week’s outlook: Wilson head to Lynchburg, Virginia for six games against Guardians’ affiliate Hill City, starting from Tuesday.
