BREAKING: Brewers Acquire Right-Handed Reliever Antonio Senzatela from Rockies

Acquiring talented reliever Nick Mears from the Rockies two years ago didn't pan out exactly as the Brewers hoped. Undeterred, however, they're back in business with the new Rockies front office. They're set to acquire right-handed reliever Antonio Senzatela, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Senzatela, 31, is in the final guaranteed season of an extension he signed with the Rockies years ago, when he was a starting pitcher and looked like the co-anchor of the team's young rotation. After injuries and the ravages of pitching at elevation took a long and heavy toll, however, he moved to the bullpen this season. That's been an extremely successful transition. Working in multi-inning relief, Senzatela has missed bats at an acceptable (though below-average) rate for the first time in his career, and continues to fill up the zone. A power cutter has turned him into an effective hurler in short bursts; he's running a 3.61 ERA. 

Owed $12 million this year (and thus, just under $4 million for what's left of it), Senzatela also has a $14-million club option in his deal for 2027. If this acquisition pans out as hoped, the Brewers will have the chance to bring him back next season—albeit at a very high price for a pitcher of his caliber. In all likelihood, this is a rental, but he gives the team an extra dose of bullpen depth and the ability to get more than three outs at a time when the situation demands it.

In exchange for the veteran righty, Milwaukee is sending two low-level prospects to Colorado. The price tag here is much lower than with the package deal for Dustin May and JoJo Romero earlier today.
