Breakdown / Highlights
Riding a nine-game winning streak heading into the series with Pittsburgh, there was one thing on the minds of all Brewers fans. Hamburgers, from George Webb. Hearing those cries, or maybe looking for redemption from the last 11-game streak, the Brewers handled the Pirates comfortably. They’d score 33 runs across the 3-game set, including a 14-0 victory in a game started by Paul Skenes.
In the series in Cincinnati, the Brewers pushed for history.
Game one saw Major League Baseball’s annual Players Weekend kickoff, and early on, it looked like the winning ways had been kicked behind Milwaukee. The Reds jumped all over Jacob Misiorowski and DL Hall and led 8-1 after two innings. Nobody told the Brewers, though, as with the help of a monster day for Yelich and the Reds' defense, Milwaukee stormed back. They’d score nine unanswered runs and send the remaining 23 Reds down in order. You might’ve heard the term ‘Uecker magic’ being thrown around the past week, and on Friday, Christian Yelich’s 4-4, two-homerun day using a bat with the late Ueck’s name scribbled across it seems like a prime example.
Saturday had no shortage of magic either. Quinn Priester and Reds starter Zack Littell were entrenched in a pitcher’s duel through the first six innings before the bullpens took over. The score was 2-1 heading into the top of the ninth, and with two outs, Milwaukee tied it on an errant throw from Elly De La Cruz. Each team then scored in the 10th inning before a pinch-hit three-run homer from Andruw Monasterio in the 11th put the Brewers ahead for good. With the win, making 14 games in a row, the 2025 Brewers now owned the longest winning streak in franchise history.
Aiming for fifteen straight on Sunday afternoon, Milwaukee ran into the buzzsaw of Andrew Abbott. He proved why he’s among the NL ERA leaders, twirling seven scoreless innings. Jose Quintana would match Abbott stride for stride until the seventh, but a sac fly would give the Reds the advantage. For the second straight day, it would take until the ninth; this time, a go-ahead two-run homer off the bat of William Contreras would give Milwaukee its first lead. With Trevor Megill unavailable, though, it was the tandem of Tobias Myers and Grant Anderson who were tasked with shutting the door. They'd bend, not break, as the Reds found the tying run but nothing more. So, for the second straight game, the Brewers were playing extras, and this time, they'd fall, as Grant Anderson was unable to keep the Reds off the board in the 10th as well.
