Brewers Minor League Link Report (5/1): Carolina’s Late Comeback Falls Short, Leaving Nashville as Sole Thursday Winner

Nashville split their doubleheader behind Ray Delgado and Deivi Garcia. Demetrio Nadal’s late homer wasn’t enough for Carolina. Biloxi allowed 8 RBIs to one player and Wisconsin couldn’t hold its early advantage.

Sounds, Stripers Split Thursday Doubleheader (including notes from the Sounds’ communications’ team)

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA- The Nashville Sounds played their second doubleheader of the season on Thursday night, splitting their two games at Coolray Field to the Gwinnett Stripers. Nashville took care of business in the first game for a 6-2 win but were shutout for the first time this year in game two as the series evened heading into the weekend.

Unsung heroes DH/INF Raynel Delgado, OF Adam Hall (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, SB) and starting RHP Deivi Garica carried the Sounds to victory in the first game of their doubleheader, while 7 hits produced 0 runs in the nightcap defeat.

Nashville’s offense made quick work of Braves’ #3 prospect RHP Hurston Waldrep, with 3B Oliver Dunn drawing a 7-pitch, 2-out walk in the 1st inning and the next 4 batters reaching via walk or RBI single to send Waldrep to the showers after just 2/3 of an inning.

C Jorge Alfaro provided the first RBI single, then Delgado (3-for-5, triple, double, 2 RBIs across the two games) broke a 1-for-25 slump to give Garcia a 3-0 cushion before he threw his first pitch.

Garcia (5 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) ultimately went five innings and threw 88 pitches (57 strikes), his highest pitch count since 2021 as he and the team are determined to get the 25-year old’s career back on track after a rough 2024 campaign. It was his second straight win, and third overall this season.

The latter contest was 1-0 in the 5th inning before Gwinnett finally delivered some tangible damage against Sounds’ starting LHP Bruce Zimmermann (4 2/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks). Prior to that point, the team had failed to cash in on big opportunities in the 1st inning (2-on, 1-out) and 2nd frame (leadoff Delgado triple), ultimately going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Sounds’ Extras:

• Dunn had a solid 2-game set, going 4-for-6 on the evening, including exit velocities of 107.1mph, 106.5mph, 104.8mph and 102.9mph, as he aims for a recall to the Show. He was the only Nashville player who played in both games to record a multi-hit game in both. Dunn entered the day with five hits in his first 10 games with Nashville and had two combined extra base hits before lacing a pair of doubles in the twin bill.
• RHPs Elvis Peguero (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K) and Vinny Nittoli (1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K) each tossed scoreless frames in the opening game win.
• The Sounds ended game two with seven runners left on base and were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position to be shutout for the first time in 2025.
• MONKEY BUSINESS: A pair of Sounds ended lengthy hitting droughts on Thursday night. Alfaro collected a hit in the first game to see his streak stop at four games. His RBI single in the top of the first inning ended a 0-for-16 slump. OF Jared Oliva had to wait a little longer with his 0-for-4 first game making it 7 games and a 0-for-24 slide since hitting a home run in his final at-bat of game one of the doubleheader on April 24th vs. Durham. Oliva ended the hitless streak with a double in his first at-bat of game two and finished 2-for-3.
• Deivi’s three wins have him tied with Logan Henderson for the most on the team and T-3rd in the International League. He had three wins in 40 games with Triple-A Charlotte in 2024 and also posted three wins in 28 games with Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre in 2023. His five innings matched his single-game high so far this year, something he has now done three times.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Logan Henderson (2.42 ERA, 38 Ks in 26 IP, including 1 MLB start) gets the chance to push Nashville to a 3-2 series lead. The Brewers' number 12-rated prospect is coming off a quality start in his last outing in which he retired 17 of the first 18 batters he faced and allowed one run on one hit over six innings last Saturday night. First pitch on Friday night at Coolray Field is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Well, if we remove Columbus’ DH Ethan Workinger’s 3 HRs and 8 RBIs, maybe Biloxi would have come out on top, right?

The good news is the Shuckers still lead their road series 2 games to 1 and managed to produce 5 runs on 9 hits to make the scoreline more respectable after trailing 8-2 throughout the middle innings.

The better news is that OF Bladimir Restituyo, 3B Brock Wilken, C Ramon Rodriguez and OF Garrett Spain managed to reach base a combined 11 times, including 2 hits each and a double for Restituyo.

Other than Mr. Wilken somehow sporting a .182 average and .768 OPS (note the power of 28 walks and 7 extra-base hits), the most interesting development is 23-year old RHP Stiven Cruz, who added two scoreless innings in his 7th relief appearance of 2025. Cruz now has 13 Ks vs. 1 BB in 12 2/3 innings this season.

Shuckers’ Extras:

• Starting RHP Abdiel Mendoza and LHP Josh Maciejewski need to put this game behind them after conceding 8 runs on 8 hits (including 3 HRs to one man) in 5 innings. They did record 6 strikeouts, so let’s have more of than and less of the former please.
• The Clingstones also won the baserunning battle on this night, going 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts (although LHP Mark Manfredi managed a late pickoff, which counts as a caught stealing), while Biloxi went 3-for-4 in that department.

Friday’s outlook: Impressive 23-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (0.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 in 17 2/3 IP) is scheduled to make his 5th start of the young campaign.

By clicking on the links above, you’ve undoubtedly already seen, read and heard about Perez’s game-opening homer and OF Luiyin Alastre’s first hit since being promoted to High-A ball (a 4th inning, 2-RBI single for a 3-2 lead).

The result was a tough outcome for starting RHP Chandler Welch (4 2/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 5 Ks), who had his last two batters in 1-2 and 2-2 counts, respectively, before walking them (both later scored). His 88 pitches (54 strikes) surpassed his prior season high of 82.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• You may recall that RHP Zach Peek (1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 WP, 3 Ks) has seen limited action over the past 2.5 seasons after a July 2022 injury, so we’ve got to live with the ups and downs as he builds himself back up.
• 3B Juan Baez reached base 3 times (single, 2 walks), SS Eduardo Garcia collected two singles and a stolen base and 2B Jadher Areinamo also produced 2 singles.
• Kudos to RHP Bayden Root and LHP Jesus Broca for combining on 3 scoreless innings of late relief, retiring all 9 hitters faced.
• This was C Blayberg Diaz’s first action since being promoted to Wisconsin, drawing a leadoff 9th inning but being stranded as 1B Blake Burke (representing the potential game-tying run) grounded out to end the game.

Friday’s outlook: Talented 20-year old RHP Bishop Letson (1.65 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 17 Ks in 16 1/3 IP) is the scheduled starter, with Wisconsin needing a victory to even the series 2-2.

Despite facing significant traffic all night (Myrtle Beach went 5-for-20 with RISP, stranding 13), the Mudcats will still feel they should have grabbed this win, especially after 3B/OF Demetrio Nadal’s first home run of 2025 – a 3-run shot for a 4-3 eighth inning lead.

That’s Nadal’s first blast since July 2023 in the Dominican Summer League, as he continues to adapt to state-side ball after missing the entire 2024 season due to injury.

RHP Miles Langhorne’s (3 2/3 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) previous pitch count high in 2025 was 40, but he was asked to stretch it further (55 pitches) and he nearly completed the feat: stranding a baserunner for LHP Sam Garcia in the 6th inning, pitching a clean 7th, escaping a 2-on, 1-out situation in the 8th frame, before the Pelicans finally got to him with an RBI single in the 9th to re-tie the game at 4-4.

Unfortunately, a pop up which could have ended the top of the 9th tied 4-4 was dropped by C Eric Martinez, allowing two unearned runs to score for a 6-4 deficit and denying Carolina a chance for a straightforward walkoff in the bottom of the 9th.

Still, the relentless Mudcats sent the game to extra innings thanks to singles from OF Tyler Rodriguez (2-for-4, double, walk, RBI, SB), the aforementioned Martinez (2-for-3, HBP) and OF Braylon Payne, with DH/2B Josh Adamczewski’s sacrifice fly knotting things at 6-6.

Mudcats’ Extras:

• The game lasted 3 hours, 35 minutes, but I’ll wind it back 3 hours to mention that RHP Travis Smith (3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) got the start, stranding a baserunner in each of the first two frames before allowing 6 consecutive Pelicans to reach via hit, walk or HBP in the 3rd inning. He was helped out of the inning by Martinez throwing out an attempted basestealer, while Smith also picked off another baserunner.
• We’ll need to watch the status of Garcia (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks), as his 6th inning exit was accompanied by an injury delay.
• Manager Nick Stanley did not appreciate the relatively tight strike zone, getting ejected in the top of the 9th inning while defending Langhorne’s effort.

Friday’s outlook: The 12-team Carolina League’s youngest pitcher (18-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez – 2.16 ERA, 13 Ks in 16 2/3 IP) is scheduled to make his 5th appearance (3rd start), as the team shoots for a 3-1 home series lead.
