RHP Logan Henderson (4 2/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks) had a rare challenging start, conceding back-to-back 2-out homers in the 1st inning, allowing the first 3 batters to reach in the 3rd inning and the first 2 hitters to come aboard in the 5th frame.

Apart from C Jorge Alfaro (2nd inning triple, 5th inning single), Nashville’s offense was also asleep for the first 6 innings, as Alfaro was the only Sound to reach base to that point.

RHP Craig Yoho’s solid work (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) and DH Andrew Vaughn’s 7th inning triple gave the team a chance down 4-1, but 3 consecutive outs stranded OF Bobby Dalbec before RHP Elvis Peguero (1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 WP, 2 Ks) had a rough 8th inning.

• In major good news, OF Jared Oliva (0-for-3) was welcomed back to the team, put in center field and atop the lineup for his first action since an injury on May 11.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Bruce Zimmermann is scheduled to start on 4 days’ rest, no doubt aiming to duplicate his last start (4 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 Ks) to help Nashville even the series.

Biloxi came out on top of this rain-delayed (63 minutes), back-and-forth contest, coming back from 2-0 and 4-3 deficits behind solid days from DH Luis Lara (4-for-4, 2 doubles, walk), SS Cooper Pratt (1-for-3, 2 walks, SB) and INF Ethan Murray (1-for-3, sac fly, 3 RBIs).

The 8th inning saw Luke Adams exit following a force out collision at the plate (concussion?; hopefully no injury) and Murray’s game-tying sacrifice fly. Not to be outdone, the bottom of the 9th had potential game-winning runner OF Jheremy Vargas thrown out at home plate for the 2nd out (on a Lara single) before 1B Mike Boeve produced the walk-off winner in an 0-1 count for 2,136 home fans.

Lara’s inning-opening double had triggered a 3-run Biloxi 4th inning in support of starting RHP KC Hunt, who only managed to cover 3 innings over 75 pitches (2 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks).

After LHP Nate Peterson conceded the lead (2 IP, 2 R, 3 Ks) RHP Zach Peek’s terrific bullpen work (30 pitches, 25 strikes – 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) kept Biloxi in the contest.

Shuckers’ Extras:

• After clinching the first half title on Wednesday, Brock Wilken, Zavier Warren, Garrett Spain and Matt Wood were getting a deserved rest day before Adams’ exit forced “Biloxi Mayor” Warren into the contest. The always-ready Mayor responded with a 1-out 9th inning single and scored the game-winning run.
• Well done to LHP Mark Manfredi for the scoreless 9th inning and OF Bladimir Restituyo for his 11-pitch sacrifice fly which gave Biloxi a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (2.51 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 57 1/3 IP) gets the chance to lead Biloxi to a clinching 4th straight win in this week’s series.

Brilliant Chris Mehring captured the key action in the linked game report, from C Marco Dinges’ continued impressive work at the plate (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) to West Michigan absolutely bottling up the Wisconsin offense over the final 6 innings (19 consecutive batters retired).

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• After starting LHP Anthony Flores conceded 5 runs in 4 1/3 IP to the talented Whitecaps, LHP Jesus Broca and RHP Patricio Aquino were terrific in trying to give the Timber Rattlers offense a chance to come back: combined 3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks.
• After a 43-minute rain delay, the teams combined for just 2 walks and zero errors, enabling completion of the 9-inning game in 1 hour, 58 minutes in front of 6,495 West Michigan fans.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Sam Garcia (3.27 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 44 Low-A/High-A IP) is set for his 3rd start in High-A ball, with Wisconsin needing a victory to re-take the series lead 2 games to 1.

Although the Mudcats trailed the entire game, we can still imagine that the rain prevented a late comeback, as the team was due six more outs.

In truth, Carolina was a bit fortunate to only trail 6-3 at that point, as Columbia had stranded 10 baserunners to the Mudcats’ 2. The Fireflies led 4-1 with the bases loaded and nobody out against starting LHP Wande Torres (3 1/3 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 4 Ks) in the top of the 3rd inning, but he managed a K-pop out-ground out sequence to keep it close.

1B Eric Bitonti’s 9th homer and OF Jose Anderson’s 5th blast constituted 2 of the team’s 4 hits on the evening:

Two errors (of 6 committed by Carolina) allowed Columbia’s 5th run to come across, but RHP Bryan Rivera (3 2/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 2 H, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 1 WP, 4 Ks) still had to escape that 7th inning with the bases loaded via a swinging K.

Mudcats’ Extras:

• 2B Luis Lameda’s 7th inning sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 6-3 and brought up C Edgardo Ordonez as the potential game-tying batter with 2-on, 2-out, but 3B Gery Holguin (0-for-1, 2 walks) was picked off base to end Carolina’s final chance.
• The starting battery of Torres and Ordonez each committed 2 errors, with Anderson and Holguin adding the other two, not to mention an Ordonez passed ball and a Torres balk.
• Per the linked game report, Carolina’s second half commences on Friday.

Friday’s outlook: 18-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (2.65 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 6.4 K/9 in 57 2/3 IP) is set for his 7th start (13th appearance) of 2025, as Carolina needs a home win to even the series at 2 games apiece.

As summed up mid-game by @biedergb in the Daily Forum, “This Mercedes Renz night is not driving home a victory it seems. As Mercedes concedes more hits and runs and Az Cubs extend to 6-0 in the 6th still with no outs.”

Unsurprisingly, the matchup of 18-year old RHP Tyler Renz (4 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and rehabbing AAA 25-year old Brandon Birdsell started slowly for the Zona squad, who did not collect their first hit until a C Freider Rojas 2-out single in the top of the 5th inning.

18-year old RHP Miqueas Mercedes (3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) entered in the bottom of the 5th inning, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks before recording his first out, benefitting from 2 outfield assists and a ground ball double play to prevent yet more damage over his 3 frames.

Both Brewers’ runs and 2 of the team’s 3 hits came in the top of the 9th inning, which saw them bring the potential game-tying batter (OF Pedro Ibarguen) to the plate thanks to 3 walks. However, a ground ball force out ended the game.

DH Kevin Garcia made the biggest offensive contribution: 1-for-3, walk, RBI. 1B Kevin Ereu’s 2025 campaign remains a struggle: 0-for-3, 3 Ks, 1 walk (caught stealing).

Rehabbing OF Blake Perkins walked in both of his plate appearances. We’ll have to see whether OF Handelfry Encarnacion’s 8th inning exit was planned (most likely) or represents an injury concern.

Final: DSL Brewers Blue 6, DSL LAD Mega 2

Led by DH Brailyn Antunez (3-for-5, double), the Blue Crew put up a 5-spot in the top of the 1st inning and never looked back in a comfortable victory.

C Yoneiker Lugo (2-for-4, double, walk, RBI, SB) plated the first run and MILB.com also now gives him credit for his 2-for-4 day back on June 14 (correcting an earlier box score anomaly). OF Carlos Done (1-for-3, HBP, sac fly, 2 RBIs) and SS Moises Polanco (1-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) also had RBI hits in the frame.

17-year old RHP Carlos Galindo (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks) and 18-year old RHP Lukas Gonzalez (4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) were effective in navigating traffic, getting key outs to keep LAD Mega 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Both Dodgers’ runs came via the long ball.

The victory gets DSL Brewers Blue back to .500 at 6-6.

Final: DSL Pirates Gold 3, DSL Brewers Gold 1 (in 7 innings)

The Gold squad produce only 2 infield singles in the game, but actually grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning – DH Romano Donato single to catcher, 2 stolen bases, scored on SS Christopher Acosta’s RBI single to shortstop.

Starting RHP Jose Arias (5 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 5 Ks) kept the Gold squad in the game by only allowing 1 infield single through 4 2/3 innings, but a balk tied the game in the 4th inning before a double and RBI single gave the Pirates a 2-1 advantage with 2 outs in the 5th inning.

A leadoff hit-by-pitch in the 5th inning (picked off) and 2-out walk in the 6th inning were the only offense the Gold team produced over the final 3 frames. Our young men were out-hit 6-2, but only struck out twice in the game.

Kudos to 17-year old RHP Enrique Velasquez of Venezuela for his professional debut: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks in the 6th inning.
