As has been the case for much of the second half, Biloxi’s bats did their part, but the Shuckers were done in by a brutal night from their pitching staff in Tuesday’s 15-7 rout to Pensacola.
The game got off to a promising start with a single by Braylon Payne and then walks to Jesus Made and Josh Adamczewski to load the bases for MiLB home run leader Andrew Fischer. Fischer then missed a grand slam by mere inches, singling off the top of the wall to give Biloxi only a 1-0 lead. Damon Keith added a single to make it 2-0 and then Eric Bitonti lifted a sac fly to give Biloxi a 3-0 lead after half an inning. Check out Fischer’s blast and Keith’s single here, courtesy of the Shuckers’ X account:
Manuel Rodriguez (4IP 6H 3H 3ER 2BB 4K) started and had his shortest outing since June, lasting just four innings. Rodriguez immediately gave a run back in the bottom of the first, after three consecutive singles and then a sac fly.
The score remained 3-1 until the 4th, when newly promoted Daniel Dickinson created havoc on the basepaths with his 61st steal of the season, then scored on a throwing error. Later Adamczewski would make it 5-1 with a single:
Rodriguez then gave the two runs back in the bottom of the fourth before exiting for Jesús Broca, who pitched a scoreless inning. Unfortunately for Bilxoi, the game turned from there. The Shuckers offense managed just one hit from innings five through eight, while both Shuckers' pitchers who entered after Broca were shelled. Pensacola took the lead for good in the 6th off Wande Torres (2.1IP 7H 8R 7ER 3BB 2K) and then put the game away with a massive nine-run 8th inning. In total the Shuckers' pitchers surrendered 17 hits and six walks,
In the 9th, Biloxi got back-to back dingers from Made and Adamczewski:
For Made, it tied the Shuckers' single season record for RBI. However, it was far too little, too late.
The Shuckers pounded out 11 hits and six walks as an offense. Payne led the way with a three-hit day and now sports a .819 OPS at the level. Adamczewski was on base four times, scored twice, and drove in two. Fischer had two hits and now has a whopping 112 RBI on the season.
RHP Bishop Letson (6-6, 5.09 ERA) will make his final start of the season on Wednesday, in his final tune up before next week’s playoffs.
