Breakdown
The Brewers began the week in Pittsburgh, playing their first four games against their division rival this season. Runs were hard to come by in the first three games, with Pirates starters Jared Joned and Bailey Falter turning in great starts to beat the Brewers in the first two games, while the Brewers used a big inning off of Josh Fleming to win game three 3-2. The final game of the series saw the respective ace of both teams go up against each other, with Freddy Peralta and Mitch Keller toeing the slab. Uncharctertiscally, both struggled, with neither man pitching into the sixth inning. A pinch-hit two-run homer from Gary Sanchez off of Aroldis Chapman would be the difference maker, as the Brewers would win 7-5 to split the series.
The Yankees would come to town to finish the week. Game 1 was started by Colin Rea, who struggled to keep the ball in the ballpark. The Brewers would battle back with the help of Joey Ortiz, whose first major league home run and subsequent walk-off single in the 11th would bring the Brewers a 7-6 victory in game 1. The subsequent day, the Yankees bats would come alive, thrashing Milwaukee 15-3 on the Brewers' second sellout of the year. The rubber match saw Tobias Myers face off against old foe Marcus Stroman, but neither starter would pitch past the 4th inning. A three-run blast from Jake Bauers would get the Brewers back in the game before some extremely questionable umpiring would sink the Brewers in the final game of the week.
It was a week where a handful of things didn’t go Milwaukee's way, especially on the injury front. Wade Miley is done for the season. Jakob Junis suffered a setback. Even Christain Yelich isn’t progressing with his injury as the team might’ve hoped. Still, guys like Blake Perkins and Joey Ortiz have stepped up to keep the Brewers in games, while the bullpen has remained relatively steady. Even Tobias Myers, despite the early results, has the chance to contribute. Going forward, health will be key.
Highlights
Jackson Chourio’s bat has gone cold over the past week or two, but this play might be his finest defensive one in the big leagues so far.
Another week, another William Contreras highlight. That tends to happen when you’ve been one of the best hitters in baseball.
Gary Sanchez isn’t off to the fastest start in a Brewers uniform, but his pinch-hit two-out, two-strike, two-run homer off of Aroldis Chapman is the swing of the year so far.
The Joey Ortiz game began with the rookie's first major league home run and ended with a walk-off hit.
This Jake Bauers blast put the Brewers back in the game Sunday and spelled the end for Yankees starter Marcus Stroman.
