Honesty the best policy? McGwire v. Agassi.
orca1963 replied to jaybird2001wi's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Not that my vote counts, but I would be far more likely to vote (HOF) for someone who came clean and admitted wrongs than one who does not come clean about it. For all we really know he didn't take steroids, but his evasiveness is not encouraging. I don't have a single friend or associate that I can think of that would pass the media scrutiny that athletes and celebrities are under. I do have a number of them though that would simply admit their mistakes and move on. These individuals are the ones I respect the most. If Mcgwire used steroids and admitted it he may very well not make the HOF. It will not however be because of his admission. It will because he did something for which he cannot be inducted. To not admit it (if he did it) and get in...well that is kind of like cheating at golf. You may get away with it but in the end when you look at your scorecard you know it is a fraud. Self respect is worth far more than any money or award can bring -
DirecTV or ATT U-Verse? Is Sports Package Worth it?
orca1963 replied to BrewCrewRising's topic in Off-Topic Forum
I live in Illinois (Rockton) about 90 miles west of Chicago. Every summer I get the Fox Sports pkg because I get the Brewer games on Fox Sports WI. I discontinue it in the off season to save a few bucks. Not sure if Chicago would be the same though. Regardless, I would not use anyone other than DirecTV. There customer service is better than any cable company I have ever used and I use customer service far less than when I had the cable companies (Comcast was one). They have a number of packages that will fit any lifestyle. I highly recommend Direct TV! -
I am not much of a stats person, but I will say that your title is the best I have seen. Well played. Now if I can only get the song out of my head. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I would have to agree with astronaut. Macha's job is first and foremost to win, but part of that means managing egos, clubhouse, etc. This was a way to put the onus on Bill Hall and ensure that in the future should he pinch hit for him, Billy would be hard-pressed to argue it. Bill has done a lot for us and deserved the shot. I would be very suprised if he were given the same chance again however. As to the argument about whether or not this forum is a good place to nit-pick a manager's descision, the answer is yes. I read this forum but comment rarely because most of what I think of is already said. I would hate to see it become nothing more than BF cheerleader forum.

2009-03-16 Cubs at Brewers... Supplemental picture thread
orca1963 replied to JumpinMacFlash's topic in Archived Game Threads
That photo of Bush pitching reminds me of a pic I saw of Pryor when he was with the Cub's. The caption read, "the dreaded inverted W" and both elbows were pointed toward the sky. The jist of it was that it was why he was so often injured. Would the Bush delivery be the one with quality / good mechanics? -

I've been reading through this thread and have really been struck by the fact that a lot of people find the WBC to be trivial (for lack of a better word). Maybe it is because I am a soccer fan as well as a baseball fan but I think this is a very important event. This is (though I do find it has plenty of room for improvement) baseball's "World Cup" and feel that--as in soccer--players should be honored to be playing in it. I can't imagine any soccer player turning down the World Cup because of "obligations" to their regular season team. From all I've read the WBC is huge around the rest of the world. I don't like to see anyone--least of all one of the Brewer's best players--injured but I think this is every bit as important as MLB itself. Everyone is playing for the "homeland". I for one have a great deal of respect for the players that choose to play and would not want to see anyone sit out because of fear of being injured. My hat is off to RB for playing and taking this serious. I hope that the USA really puts together a cohesive team and manager next time, puts egos aside and plays the best players for the best situation. Maybe then we can bring the WBC trophy to the country that started all this. EDIT: This post is probably more suited for "WBC fan or not" thread. At this time of day everything runs together for me. Feel free to move it or delete me for not paying attention.

I know, we could make them "ghost runners", then after the game everyone gets a trophy and we all go out for cookies and ice cream.

How can the World Series be as big as the Super Bowl?
orca1963 replied to adamb100's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
The biggest and best thing about the Super Bowl is that the end of it signals the beginning of baseball season. I am not sure that I agree that the Superbowl is bigger. It is--as has been said--one game. The world series is 4 minimum and possibly seven. I could be wrong, but I would be suprised if the total viewership of the entire series is less than the Super bowl. Hype--the bowl has--in spades, but how many times does the game itself live up to that hype? As has been said there are a lot of people who "watch" the SB that aren't even fans...so what? They are probably also not going to be supporters throughout the year. The best thing baseball can do is clean up its image (in which I believe they are making headway) and not stoop to the gimmick. You see it this year with the economy the way it is...sales are down, advertising--though sold out--has some very key players missing. I guess the main point I am so feebly trying to make is that I don't think baseball needs to imitate football. I just don't see that as a need for the game. Of course if you truly want to make baseball the best it can be you could get rid of that silly little DH thing that keeps messing up the game. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -
Prince is a old school player in my book, and because of that I was very excited when I heard he was going to be here (barring a trade) for a while longer. He hustles, he dives, he plays with a lot of passion. I was even impressed with his vegetarianism because of his reasons for doing it, reasons I can respect even if I will never myself follow that lifestyle. I don't agree with everything he does or says but who among us can say that about anyone. Everytime he comes up to the plate he can change the game. Everytime he steps onto the field he may also change the game and not always for the better, but it won't be for a lack of hustle. As to the comments regarding his weight I hope only for him to do the best for him for his health first of all, and obviously because he can only be better with a healthier weight. I don't watch baseball much for the stats, I watch it for the game itself, so I tend to look more at personality and "grit" than numbers (I know that borders on blasphemy here http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif) Prince's personality is every bit as big as he is...I hope he has a long carreer as a Milwaukee Brewer.

I didn't go through the whole thread so forgive me if I am being redundant; I love what I have seen so far. The Larsen perfect game was great as was the interview with the battery mates. I am a bit concerned with the upcoming Red Sox line-ups of programs as I am hoping it doesn't become a Yankees/Sox/Cubs network...already have that in ESPN. I like the talent (that Trenni looks vaguely familiar) and the HD looks great. Just wish I acutally had HDhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But the biggest selling point for me is the fact I work the graveyard. On my days off I keep the same sleep schedule so I have had more than my fill of infomercials. Now I will actually be able to fill that time with baseball...I am very happy.

If the Gold Glove is strictly awarded for prowess with the glove then I would have to agree that some who have been awarded it may have not deserved it. By this criteria it should be 99% stat driven with the only variable being the intangibles. (Does the player make fantastic plays because he is that good or is he out of position or getting a late jump on the ball)? I have always looked at the Gold Glove as more of an award given to a stellar baseball player. It should still be heavily decided on the player's skill with the glove, but what about the fact that once the ball is caught it becomes what the player does with his arm or his legs? Adding his skill with a bat as a lesser portion of the award does not take away from the award in the least imo.
