What's up with this bullpen?

Who are you refering too? Hoffman...he was great last year. Why would we have not signed him back? Hawkins.,..I can see a complaint but he wont be as bad as he is....is he is its only 3.5MM a year. If you are refering to Gange, it was a hopeful wish but a one year deal. Melvin is doing his best with what he has to work with. I would like to see Braddock but thats it but he is in AA, last time I checked. Who do you want in AAA to come up and who do you want to replace? There is a reason they are in AAA. The hest players play in AA. Sometimes I wonder how many people understand baseball on this site....Its not at easy as you think. -
Rotation Battle 2.0 -- Latest: Suppan Named 5th Starter
SDOwen28 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Parra would have to be traded. He is out of options and there is no way he makes it through waivers. I like Narverson but I am not ready to give up on Parra. Lets see what he can do with a good pitching coach and then evaluate him -
Why I agree with this, Gomez can not hit 8th in the order unless he gets plate disapline. Imagine I guy on second and two outs...most teams will pitch around the 8th hitter to get to the pitcher. He will be hacking at those crap pitches and our pitcher will lead off the next inning.

Giants' plunking of Fielder (March 4, first ST game)
SDOwen28 replied to SeriesFinale's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
It doesnt matter where it takes place. Plus the Giants are still going to be on the field/dugout when it is going on. This is what happens when people show boat in baseball. I liked the celebration but figured he would get it someday. Just like the pitcher from the Pirates that beaned Braun last year....the Brewers took their sweat time in getting them back. Players dont forget what happened. -
Giants' plunking of Fielder (March 4, first ST game)

I dont understand the big deal about this at all. Why I thought it was a pretty cool homerun celebration, I can see why they were upset. It was show boating and that is what happens when someone show boats. I can guarantee most people that are upset about this would be upset if roles were reversed. Its also not like Zito threw at his head or anything. -
I dont think Gamel will make the team. I do want McGehee hitting 5 though, I think he is our best hitter after Braun and Fielder. He wasnt lucky last year, you can tell by his solid contact he was making. He is going to see many fastballs with Fielder getting pitched around.

Dave Bush is a guy that is going to throw 2 or 3 gems a year and get lit up 2 or 3 times a year so those cancel out but in my mind he is a very serviceable 4 or 5.....he eats innings, which I cant say about most 4 or 5's on teams and keeps us in the game and with our offense is what we want.

Top ten...overall? Maybe. I said he has great defense but I can list many that are better offensively. 20 HR's is nothing to brag about. 40+ is...Hart hits around 20. Is he a great offensive player? I bet 20 of the homeuns came in 15 games too...hits them in bunches. Its sad when the most valulable thing a player does offensively is hit 20 HR's. Im not even going to get into his bad situation hitting, never could get the guy from second over because he was either a) striking out or b) rolling over the ball to third/ss.

Cameron is and has been awful offensively. Yeah great he hit 20+ HR's but hit .250 and strike out a ton. Plus he ran us out of countless innings on the base paths. You could count on Cameron for a week, then he was done for 2-3 weeks. Now he was great defensively but Gomez close enough to him defensivley. You take away the HR's, I dont see much of a difference, besides clubhouse leadership. I think McGehee will be better this year, he was nicked up all last year. Now, if he does not come back from that injury, then we got worse. but I am banking he will be healthy. You can tell when a hitter is getting lucky and when he knows what he is doing, McGehee was not getting lucky. I dont know what is not to like about this team giving our team payroll and the bad contracts we have. I dont think Melvin could have done a better job this offseason. I did not think he could add what he did with what he had to work with and hang on to our top prospects.

I dont want a slightly above average pitcher for $10MM a year. I know Lackey is not likley but wouldnt you rather spend another $5-6 per year to get him over Wolf. I just think with Wolf we are going down the same track with Suppan, a decent pitcher overpaid. Or down the tracks of Gagne and Riske, we need pitching help and overpaid for it.

Im not going to look up the numbers but I bet they were not that strike out prone as you think. Plus they are just better at every position. Out hitters are not that good to overcome our shortfalls, like the Yankees. Now throw in their pitching. Besides Howard, the Phillies were not that strikeout prone either. Thier pitching cant compare to the Brewers. The way small market teams win is not homerun, strikeout players.

The Brewers offense was not a strength to win a World Series. Teams dont win World Series with their offense....homerun hitters, strikeout hitters, streaky hitters, and non-situation hitters. JJ was the worst situation hitter. Everytime there was a guy on 2nd or 3rd, JJ could not get them over or in with a groundball because he was a 100% pull hitter. Now throw in his strikeouts and his streakiness. JJ had 1.25-1.5 good seasons in Milwaukee. I know his defense was good but we are not losing anything with Escobar. I am not 100% sold on Gomez, but I dont mind it one bit. We got a guy that we know can play defense and is cheap. Hopefully we can figure out hitting or the strikezone to take more walks. He has a high ceiling when it comes to hitting because of his speed. Before Cameron, remember all the piss poor defense we saw in centerfield. The guy is 23....I dont care how long he has been in the majors, he is young....it takes time for most major league hitters to figure it out. Bottom line....we had to trade Hardy. There was no way we could have kept him after sending him to AAA and the fact we have a better SS. Could we have waited longer into the offseason...maybe but his value could go down even more, with teams knowing we were going to trade him. If Hardy was on the team next year, it would have been a distraction the whole year. Plus, what if he continues his struggles....we might be lucky to get a bag of popcorn for him. I think we got a decent return on Hardy. His value was no where near what most people thought. We were not going to get an above average ready prospect for him. This way we save money on position players and have it to spend on pitching. I think this makes the Brewers a better team for several reasons... 1-We get more speed on the team to manufacture runs. There were so many games we lost the past years because we could not manufacture a run (tack on a run). Going from a 2 run lead to 3 is huge. Cameron was the same type of hitter as Hardy...steaky, pull, and strikeout. 2- We can spend money on pitching instead of trading for a young unknown pitcher. If we made the trade for Harang and kept Cameron, that is $20 million...What kind of pitcher are we going to get next with the the little we have left? Melvin put himself in this spot with Suppan and Hall...we have to deal with it until 2011. 3 - We are better defensively. And lastly, we dont have to JJ whinning over where he is hitting in the lineup. Most major league hitters can be good when you are hitting in front of Braun and Fielder.
