  1. "This must be the sixth tool of posting, eh bradyo? " Huh? This is a message board isnt it? A place where people express their opinions, right? All I am saying is that despite that fact that a guy does a lot of posting here, or is even directly related to the "operation" of this site, doesnt make you an expert. I think what colbyjack does is pretty good, all I am saying is that it doesnt really stack up to the level of insider information or expert. If you get ticked off because someone voices criticism, well welcome to the real world. He works for Perfect Game USA, great. He does stuff for this website, great. But he isnt a scout and he doesnt work for a major league team, so he is neither an expert nor an insider. Worthy of thanks, yes. Anything above that is patting yourself and him on the back. I would think that even he would rather have respect and admiration from people affiliated with the game, as opposed to self congratulatory compliments.
  2. "Colbyjack is an employee of Perfect Game USA, and therefore has access to much of the information that the blogosphere doesn't. He also attends several amateur events each year to scout first hand. " I dont think that the fact that someone is affiliated with Perfect Game USA gives you access that others do not have. I am no fan of that particular group. Their main goal is making money. When a kid is asked to pay $250 and up to be a part of a Perfect Game Team, I think that that aspect dimishes its validity and "reporting". (i.e. a kid is only a perfect game kid if he can afford the price, and kids that cant afford who may be as good or better are not included)(This belief also holds true with "travelling teams", ie only kids whose parents are wealthy enough to send the kid all over are part of those teams). And when you say that he "scouts" these events...who is he scouting for? A major league team? Because its not really scouting if youre not getting paid by a team that will use and evaluate your "scouting". Its just fan observations otherwise. Now if he were a major league scout, even a bird dog, he would be adding value. I will not comment on your use of the term "blogosphere" because your use of it pretty much speaks for itself.
  3. I did not mean to say that his efforts lack value, because there is value in what he does. But as I mentioned, in finance terms, there is no "value add". And what I mean by that is that alot of the information he posts comes from other places first. To make an analogy, in finance (once again) the second somethign hits the airwaves or the newspaper, its public, its worthless, there is no value add. A good financial analyst is going to have contacts inside of the company (access) and in turn will be able to pass along his assumptions on the value of that acess (value add) onto his customers/clients. What colby does is time consuming for sure, but there is not really anything new in what he posts here. There is a difference between being a scouting director who gets a lot of his information 2nd hand from his scouts, who also a lot of times get their information from a "bird dog", and getting your information from blogs and newspaper clippings, or even seeing a player in person and noticing the little things that you cant get on a tv broadcast or a highlight or a news story. And I do apologize to colbyjack, he provides a nice list of information, much bigger than what the journal sentinel may provide. And there is definitely value in it.
  4. He seems like a nice guy, and does a lot of research on news reports, but (to use a financial term) Colbyjack doesn't really "add value". Seems to put up a bunch of stuff on the site from all sorts of internet reports and various blogs and things like that, but (once again from the finance world (e.g. the movie Wall Street) he doesnt really wow me. No offense to colbyjack. Insider information and access are the things that add value, not rehashing of things already out there.
  5. Awful, just plain awful. Jackie boy is out of his mind. Time to start www.firejackzdnurienczckeizey.com website.
  6. Yaaaaaahhhhhhyyyyyy!!!!! Moustakas is gone!!!!!!!!
  7. Chicago Tribune says the Cubs like Moustakas and will take him 3rd. Thats good news to me if true. Then 4 or 5 can take Vitters and that leaves Wieters (or Smoker) for the Brewers. They also have a mock draft and have the Brewers picking Beau Mills, another Antone Williamson type player. Please Lord no!! Smoker or Wieters........
  8. Aumont is the next Rogers/Jones. If they take him, especially since they only have one of the top 101 picks, Jackie boy really is a moron. As for Moustakas, he wouldnt be as bad of a pick, but I would still take Wieters over him (if both available) in a second. If they take Aumont over Smoker, just mark your calenders today then and measure how long it takes for Aumont's first season ending injury vs. Smokers arrival in the Major Leagues.
  9. Im not sure if any of those HS kids were lefties, but I agree, they should avoid HS rhp like the plague. Play old school scout for ten minutes Jack and realize your picks recently were not very good in the pitching department (in the first round). If they go the HS route, I'm rooting for Josh Smoker.
  10. The more I think about this, I think that the Brewers would be extremely foolish if they did not take Wieters if available. With the new rules put in place, the team is at a great advantage to take who they want and pay what they want. Right now, Wieters is at a spot where, if not signed he cant go back to school and play baseball if he chooses, and he would have to spend a year in independent ball, taking chance of injury or diminished skills, or even diminished heart. So I say the Brewers take Wieters, if available, compromise on his $10mm asking price, and offer him a $7mm Major League contract, and tell him to take it or leave it. They dont have to worry about all of the slot nonsense since they would be giving the major league contract, and they can throw in a bonus, if he makes it to the majors within 3 years. Or......they can take a high risk high school pitcher who will get injured in A ball.
  11. Never going to happen, because as bad as the Brewers are at developing and drafting HS pitchers, they are even worse at dishing out big money to prospects.
  12. Funny that you would mention BJ Surhoff..... Because he fits the mold of the typical Brewer pick (i.e. they passed on a better player). Lets not forget that they could have had Will Clark that draft, and I would dare anyone to say that Surhoff was a better player than Clark was.
  13. Of course no one is implying they will draft for need, nor should they. But I'm telling you all...Moustakas will be a Brad Nelson type of guy if they pick him. The guy doesn't fit anywhere. I think he is a nice pick if you groom him and develop him into a good catcher in the system. With his bat, he will always be useful somewhere. But I don't think a player is done any favors by being switched from position to position in the minors like Nelson was and Moustakas would be. I would take Wieters no quesitons asked with that pick if he is available and then my next two choices are Smoker or Weathers.
  14. Its a whole new ball game these days. Players are drafted because of their size, baseball ability is secondary. Who would have thought 10-15 years ago that a big bulky player at almost every position would be the norm. Used to be if you threw 90 you got a contract, now you have to throw 90 but also be 6-5", same goes for position players. Look at A-Rod, hes a pretty big guy, and he plays a position that you would think needs a quick, lightning bug type of player. Size is the first priority.
  15. Even though they would never do it....are you kidding me? Inman for Salty??? The Brewers would be getting a steal in that one. Inman will be a nice pitcher, possibly even a very good one, but Salty is a top notch prospect, one of the 10 best in baseball IMO. Beside that, why would you trade one prospect for another? Until the Indians/Padres trade this past winter of Barfield/Kouz, the prospect for prospect deal I think is pretty rare (although the Sox and Rangers did Danks/McCarthy).
  16. you misunderstood me: Braves get Sheets Brewers get Salty, plus 2 other prospects.... Minor league numbers dont mean anything really, its all about development. Salty is a future all-star catcher.
  17. They would have to get a couple more prospects in return, but if I am the Braves GM and the Brewers come sniffing around Saltamacchia, I ask for Ben Sheets. Hes the only legitimate asset the Brewers hold that could garner Salty in return. (not one for one though, the Braves would need to throw in at least one top notch prospect as well as another 2nd or 3rd tier guy).
  18. I wouldnt want either of those guys if they fell to us (Vitters or Porcello), but definitely would if Wieters did. The only way I would be remotely interested in Vitters would be if you converted him to a SS or could rely on his arm as a right fielder, otherwise, no thanks.
  19. I'd rather have that than the whopping one pick the Brewers have in the top 100 picks.
  20. I am not completely sold on Wieters' production either, but you cannot ignore his size and potential. Personally, I would prefer, if I were a GM, Lars Davis from U of IL. And although hyped a lot and possibly available, I do not want to see the Brewers take Moskos or Detweiler. The more I think about it, as I write this post, I think Smoker is the guy I would like to see the Brewers draft most.
  21. If Baseball America is right, and Matt Wieters falls all the way to St. Louis, if he is available, Wieters is the guy the Brewers SHOULD pick, but we all know they wont. They have them picking Moustakas, which isnt a bad pick though (but only if they plan on using him as a catcher), not as bad at least as Jeffress or Rogers. But if thats not the case, and they dont feel like getting the crowbar out to sign Wieters, then two other picks I would like to see are Smoker or Weathers.
  22. Count me in the take Wieters and pay the man group. I love catchers that can hit, and I think he's going to be a good one. If you like that, Id rather see them take a guy with more upside potential, like Lars Davis from Illinois, contact hitter with power, hits for average, and hes a lefty. Although not a first rounder by any means, I would have the crew take him over Weiters any day of the week. Edit: To differentiate the quote from the post. -Toby
  23. Its time to trade Gee-off while the iron is hot for bullpen help. To the Nationals, along with Vargas, for Jon Rauch for Collin Ballestar and Glenn Gibson. Then you move Villanueva into the 5 spot, Mench full time in LF (or the ever popular Hall back to 3rd and Gwynn leading off and CF), and you get 2 top notch prospects for major league ready guys.
  24. I'm not too thrilled about his size (think hes a little chunky). He does have nice numbers though, I would much rather take a HS lefty than a college one (Even Price), like Bumgarner.
  25. Even though Matt Weiters is the best of the catching crop, and best of the offensive players in this years draft, I dont feel he is a cant miss type of player. I think his draft position/status is the result of this being one of the weakest draft classes in recent history. Is he a potential all star? Yes, but is he a guy like Griffey or ARod coming into the draft, no. His size is nice, but his performance offensively is just barely above what a scout would call "outperforming". Granted he plays against many players who will get drafted highly, but he is a guy I wouldnt mind seeing the Brewers pass on if he were available, and add to this the boras effect, not worth the hassle.
