  1. Yes control was a problem for Marmol, but IMO it was more a lack of moxie. He's a converted position player with an amazing arm, so he still learning what it means to pitch. On the days he does not have his best stuff, he doesn't just struggle, he gets lit up. It also seemed that he was tough as nails the first time or 2 through the order, but lacked the experience to adjust to get thru the order the 3rd time. That being said, he sure made the Brewers look pretty inept when he faced them. He's got a chance to be something special in a couple of years. Cubs trading away another Dontrelle Willis?
  2. Thanks R, you've made up my mind for me. I'm coming up on 1,000 posts, and was thinking maybe I'd just stop at 1,000, and go on to something else more mature and relevant, even though this site is so great. But now I'm sure. That post tells me it'll 1,000 and out for me. Only 4 more to go.
  3. I'm not a stat guy. Is 1.25 whip good or bad? I'm not being a wise guy, I really do not know.
  4. I'm not denying those facts at all. Sheets' control is wonderful. All I'm saying is that someone a lot smarter than me kept trotting Ryan out there for 5,386 innings. Want to call it average control? Sure. Below average control? I'd take that. No control - wrong.
  5. Interesting choice of words. Nolan Ryan - Hall of Fame pitcher, played 27 years in the bigs, with 324 wins, 5,000 strikeouts and a career whip of 1.25. And all that with no control. As I have stated many times before. BFN -- Tough room.
  6. If you're talking pure tools, Sheets and Nuegebauer had an abundance. However, Gallardo's ability to be a pitcher, and just plain get people out is as good as I've seen at this stage of his development in some time.
  7. Honu 7, Beach Boys 1. Cain 0 for 5. Ford, Thatcher and Hinton DNP. Both Ford and Cain are hitting in the low .100's now, but beware the small sample size. Their first extended season will be a good learning experience. A very wise man once told me that being served a piece of humble pie every now and then is healthy. www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/scores/honu_beachboys_10-8.html
  8. Saturday, North Shore wins 5-4. Thatcher strikes out 4 in 3 innings of shut out ball. Hinton lit up for 4 runs in the ninth. Ford 0 for 4 with 3 k's, Cain idle. www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/scores/honu_beachboys_10-7.html
  9. Pretty expensive greens fees. Who do they think they are, Bushwood?
  10. Yep, looks like it can't move either way from 7.
  11. Yankees leaving Columbus suprises me. If I recall correctly, they had been there a long time.
  12. Great stuff. That must have been a lot of fun putting it together. As I reported in another thread, reoprts here in Texas are that Padilla is a real locker room cancer, so we'd need to proceed with caution. This guy seems to have a real problem with booze and needs to clean up his life before I'd be an enabler and dump a load of money and security on him. Pitching bereft Texas does not want to resign him, and he has been real productive for them this year. I do love the idea of signing Valentin, and if that does not work out, Barajas would be an equally solid alternative.
  13. Outstanding job Mass! Thank you ever so much for the link reports. It sure makes the summer fill up with baseball.
  14. Good call Igor. Get rid of a solid, veteran, professional hitter so you can rush a prospect? I'm not sure which part of that equation I dislike more.
