The Cardinals had to do this a lot last year. Believe me, it's not a good sign.

I don't remember when it was, but I remember getting killed by Boston years ago and catcher Rick Dempsey came in to pitch. Actually did better than some of the pitchers.

 

Edit: It was 1991. Apparently, he pitched 2 times that year, according to baseball-reference.

Isn't April 17 realllllly early in a year for this to be happening? What were the circumstances?

The Brewers set their team record when three position players pitched on August 29, 1979. Sal Bando pitched three innings, and Jim Gantner and Buck Martinez each pitched one.

Loretta's appearance was 2001. Also, Terry Francona pitched an inning in 1989.

Had they brought Bando into that game earlier instead of Reggie Cleveland who as a Brewer in 79 was simply horrific, they actually might have won that game.

This is the reasons I think rosters should be expanded by one player, a pitcher, who can only be brought in if the lead is more than 7 runs. This would give a job to Elmer Dessens and so it's justified.
