ESPN Reports Abreu re-signs with Angels for 2/19

Abreau signs 2 years $18 million deal with a $9 million option for 2012 with a $1 million buyout. Incentives in 2011 could guarantee the final year of the deal. He had a great 2009 season, and i wonder if this helps give us some perspective on what it will take to retain Cameron?

Yeah, I was going to say, so much for Cameron not being able to get around $10M AAV. I sure hope he's serious about being willing to give the Brewers a discount.

I'm not sure. They already have a decent amount of outfielders (Swisher, Cabrera, etc) and are faced with re-signing both Damon and Matsui. Then again, Sabathia and Cameron supposedly remain close...maybe C.C. convinces his friend to come to New York.

There was talk of them letting Matsui go but a World Series MVP can change things. They wanted to open up the DH slot to rest say ARod, Jeter, Posada and Damon on occasion. Cameron is still loads better than Cabrera though and they could move Cabrera.

What perspective? Abreu knocked in over 100 runs for the 8th time in his career and walked 94 times. That's a normal year for him. Cameron had a good year for him but still only drove in 70 runs batting behind two guys who combined for around a .400 OBP and his OBP was nearly 50 points lower than Abreu. Abreu was grossly underpaid last year (I was one of a few here that wanted the Brewers to sign him). Cameron gets extra juice for his defense, but offensively he doesn't come close to Abreu.

Cameron had a WAR of 4.3, Abreu 2.5.

Not that I would ever use RBI as a measuring stick for anything, but Cameron had less than 50% of his PA batting 5th. He hit 6th more than any other position and that isn't usually a huge RBI spot. Certainly not as much as batting 3rd.

 

Abreu is a better hitter because of his OBP but Cameron absolutely blows Abreu away defensively so he is the better player most likely.

Well, the big difference is Abreu is in the AL now...so he has more value to the Angels than a Mike Cameron probably would.

I don't think Cameron is going to be high on the Yankee priority list. They did just fine this year with Melky and Gardner, and Austin Jackson is waiting in the wings. They are more likely to sign Holliday, and of course they would have some fan pressure to retain who they have, given how well the team played.
