Dallas - The Brewers were interested in retaining

reliever LaTroy Hawkins but told him they couldn't make an offer until

they saw if Francisco Rodriguez accepted arbitration by the 11 p.m.

deadline Wednesday.

Hawkins didn't wait around. He is signing with the Los Angeles Angels, reportedly on a one-year deal.

Hawkins, who turns 39 in a couple of weeks, recovered from shoulder

surgery to have a nice 2011 season for the Brewers. In 52 appearances,

he was 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and became increasingly dependable in the

late innings.

Hawkins was also a great guy and clubhouse influence, which I'm sure the Brewers will miss.

For all that people were worried/are worrying about how K-Rod might implode for a monstrous ERA next season, if I had to pick between having him back & having Hawk back, it'd be K-Rod. I think the Brewers got about all they could've hoped from Hawk, & then some.

Best of luck to him, as he was nothing but a good pitcher, good person & great teammate while with the Brewers.

Would have liked to have kept him, but with the growing chance K-Rod is around, the priorities have shifted. I sure hope that they are able to keep Saito though, as he was my preference of the two.

I don't believe the abnormal GB/FB rate is for real and the rest of his stats are at replacement level. He won't repeat the fluky HR/FB which saved him.

He still had a great walk rate, which has been a strength of his for the last several years. It shouldn't be a big loss or anything, but I wouldn't have minded him back for a couple million bucks.

hawkins is truly a great guy. anybody who follows him on twitter knows this.

anyways, i think he's a two million dollar reliever at best. a team like the brewers can't be paying for team chemistry.

With K-Rod signing now, the can't afford to spend that type of cash on a guy like Hawkins. He's a fine relief pitcher, but that money can be much better served elsewhere.
