2012 Minor League Transaction Thread -- Pre-Draft

It looks as though transactions are caught up for the day. It may appear as though Huntsville has an extra body at 26, but recently claimed RHP Josh Stinson (Mets) hasn't formally joined the Stars yet, it appears. They will have to find a spot shortly, it would seem.

Tom H. tweet:

Pitching prospect Cody Scarpetta is on Class AA Huntsville's DL with an ailing elbow that is expected to sideline him several weeks.

At some point, the Brewers will need to try and sneak Scarpetta through waivers. It will probably be next spring when he'll have no options remaining and any claiming club would have to keep him on their major league roster before re-exposing him to waivers themselves. Hard to see how he'd be ready to be a permanent big leaguer next April.

Brooks Conrad has been placed on the 7-day DL with an undisclosed injury on infielder-stuffed AAA Nashville's roster, though I took a guess as to what the malady might be here.

Veteran minor league RHP Jim Henderson joins Nashville from Huntsville. That ostensibly will make room for the arrival of fellow RH reliever Josh Stinson with the Stars.

Catcher Dayton Buller has been formally activated at Nashville, although he was on the originally stated roster list for the Sounds earlier as well. So the Sounds are carrying as many catchers (Martin Maldonado, Paul Phillips, and Buller) as true outfielders (Corey Patterson, Logan Schafer, Caleb Gindl).

Via BA's Minor League Transactions, we learn the Brewers have signed 22-year-old catcher Emmanuel Quiles, who was a 6th-round pick in 2007 by San Diego but never made it above A-ball. He's a career .225/.270/.293 hitter and is from Puerto Rico, so he's obviously the next Martin Maldonado.

Released: C Kevin Moscatel, 2B Gant Elmore, 3B Kyle Dhanani, OF Chuck Caufield, OF Chris Dennis, OF Jay Gibbons

Confirmations above on releases by Baseball America -- we'll briefly note more about each player later today; too bad Chris Dennis' power bat potential was never maximized, fun to follow back when he was "on"...

I'm actually kind of bummed about the Chris Dennis release.

Baseball America indicates the Brewers released 25-year-old catcher Tony Pechek, who served as the backup in Wisconsin last season. He had been signed as an undrafted free agent in July of 2009.

I don't know if Twitter knew the monster they'd eventually be creating with Mass Haas tackling the twitterverse. You never fail to impress me with your Twitter networking, man.

These were reported by various sources earlier today, I'm borrowing Todd Rosiak's text to summarize:

OF Kentrail Davis and RHP Santo Manzanillo have been placed on the Huntsville DL, effective 4/11.

NOTE: Adam McCalvy indicated he'd be updating us in his notebook today on their status.

RHP Eric Marzec has been transferred from Brevard County to Huntsville.

RHP Brandon Williamson has been transferred from Wisconsin to Huntsville.

RHP Tyler Cravy has been transferred from extended spring training (Helena roster) to Wisconsin.

Marzec, Williamson and Cravy will be active for their new teams on Thursday (4/12).

Huntsville goes to 13 pitchers with the move, and Brevard is one body short for now. Also, Adam noted that once Mitch Stetter is ready for action, he'd be reporting to Huntsville. That would conceivably allow a pitcher to drop down a spot to fill the Manatee opening, but we'll wait and see...

TH is reporting that Braddock is going back on the temporary inactive list again, so I assume someone will be moving up to fill the spot. Or will they just wait and activate Rogers?

Adam McCalvy:

The Brewers placed a pair of prospects on the Double-A Huntsville disabled list, effective Wednesday. Outfielder Kentrail Davis with a left hamstring strain and right-handed reliever Santo Manzanillo with right shoulder tightness.

Manzanillo injured his shoulder in a serious auto accident in November, but was a healthy participant in Spring Training and his current ailment is not considered serious. Another pitching prospect originally ticketed for Double-A, Cody Scarpetta, has been working in extended Spring Training camp to get past right elbow discomfort.

I think he hurt his wrist. Not a season killer.

Broken hamate bone isn't a good thing, though. He won't be fully recovered this year, I would imagine. And he will need to hit at Wisconsin before he gets to BC.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Brooks Conrad (shoulder) activated at Nashville Sunday, does not appear a corresponding move was necessary because of the Eric Farris recall, but one will be needed upon Farris' return to AAA.

Nashville Tweet:

INF Eric Farris & P Mark Rogers join Sounds roster today. Rogers to start Tuesday vs. OKC. P Jim Henderson and C Dayton Buller placed on DL

Could Henderson have injured himself on his game-winning hit Sunday? Buller's stint MAY be as a placeholder as 3rd catcher in rotation, a la Patrick Arlis in the past.
