This is basically the same principle as the Brewers would potentially be looking to apply if they traded for Happ.

Giants take on a bad contract and get a really nice prospect in doing so with Will Wilson. Don't see deals like that too often, I wonder if you'll start seeing more of it with high rolling teams looking for creative ways to get under the luxury tax.

With the Angels unloading their 1st round pick (15th overall) from the 2019 draft in order to unload some payroll obligations there is speculation a much larger move is on the horizon.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

My initial thought was that the Brewers should have been in on a Cozart rebound, but my goodness was he bad last season. Only 107 PA but a -14 wRC+ (negative!). Even with elite defense he was on pace for -4.0 fWAR over a full season.

I see that article talks about Dubon on 2B next year.

So what are we assuming the cash considerations that the Giants are sending to the Angels? $1 to make it official?

Cozart was an awful signing by the Angels. Wonderful example of making a bad decision on one year of numbers and ignoring the long track record that came before it. Sure, if you sign him as a shortstop and get his usual excellent defense then you can live with a disappointing offensive performance. But signing him as a third baseman, minimizing his defensive contribution and then thinking he was going to provide legitimate "third base offense" was an act of sheer folly.

It would be hilarious if they traded their first rounder to create luxury tax room and then ended up missing out on Cole (already), Rendon and Donaldson.
