When I was growing up there used to be “big holiday doubleheaders” on days like Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. But, over the years I think teams have found that attendance lags on these holidays and there is no compelling reason to play if a lot of fans prefer other holiday activities.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

On any other holiday I'd agree. Given the purpose of memorial day I don't think any team should play. Monday should be more a more solemn day. There's plenty of time for fun and sun on Saturday and Sunday.

At least I got to listen to Kansas City clobber the Cardinals. 😊

On a more serious note, I notice that, at some or maybe all Memorial Day games, there were moments of silence or other acknowledgments of those "who gave the last full measure of devotion" to our nation.

I'd call it more of a revenue-generating oversight to not schedule MLB games during holidays that would typically fill up a ballpark for a day game, particularly when that holiday is during most all school years.

It did disappoint me when I pulled up the MLB scoreboard and didn't see the Brewers in action yesterday - would've enjoyed having the game on over the radio while getting some gardening and hanging out in the backyard done on a beautiful weather day.

I mentioned this in the Sunday game thread, but our series for Monday would have been in Toronto and there was no holiday in canada yesterday, so no incentive for Toronto to have a game yesterday.  SF played yesterday, so not like we could have had a wrap around with them either.

Now obviously that is for our series specifically so it does not say anything about the other teams that had off yesterday as well.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Does anyone else think that MLB should adopt the MiLB "museum" schedule? Mondays are off days, one team, one city for a 6-game series each week? I have given it a lot of thought and think it would be good for every stakeholder. I love the idea of having "Yankees Week," with the ups/downs of winning/losing streaks be even more dramatic. Bullpen messes, 6-man rotations.

I like that schedule for MiLB but I'm not sure about using it in MLB. To be honest, I had never even considered it until you posted this.

I like it for the minor leagues, but I don't think I would want it at the MLB level. I am a fan of the balanced schedule and playing every team every single year. You couldn't do that with the MiLB schedule.

Oh man... that's a great point. I should've done the math.

Great point. Yeah, I also like the less-unbalanced schedule and playing every team.

I would prefer they play every team home and away during the season but that probably involves too much travel.

Divisional - 13 games each (52 games total)

Intraleague - 5 games each, home-away 2-3 game series swapping each year (50 games total)

Interleague - 4 games each, home-away 2 game series (60 games total)

True, disgrace might be overstating it a bit but it's still pretty dumb to not play baseball games on Memorial Day.

Do the Canadians care?  Thought of this since Milwaukee travelled to Toronto.

Canadians don't care but I think ten teams had yesterday off, and people in the US still want to tune into the game.

I agree.  That is crazy.

Memorial Day / Labor Day are one of the few times where MLB teams will sometimes schedule games with a start time that is ideal for parents with young children who take afternoon naps (3:30 or 4 PM start).

I'll also give MLB credit for one thing...recently they have been doing the poppy patch on Memorial Day which feels far more appropriate than another military salute holiday that is indistinguishable from the others.

I think "disgrace" is a bit strong. It's just a baseball game.

i'd replace "a disgrace" with "dumb". i thought this thread was about something way more significant than a memorial day off.

What do mean " no compelling reason " ! The compelling reason is being on a national stage , observing a moment of silence for the people that died so that u can type away and say stupid things like that. Its a time to be patriotic and wear the red, white and blue ! Hang a american flag on your house ! Every team should play !

Teams can, and do, hold Memorial Day/weekend observances on Saturday and Sunday before the actual holiday. . There are also many other places to observe the holiday

I can fly a flag on my house whether there is a ball game or not. Sorry that you think that my opinion  is “stupid s**t, but I don’t think it’s a big deal, much less a disgrace.

With the Fox regional telecasts on Saturdays, there are several games that start at 3:10 PM. The Brewers have 4 of them this year, including last Saturday.

Not the point , it was about memorial day ! Not Saturday  , not Sunday ! Time for everybody to observe it together , everybody should play.  Never said it was a disgrace , some or else did although I don't disagree . what I don't care for is the wording of ( no compelling reason ) there are a million reasons and I'm not talking money !
