Starting RHP Tobias Myers spun 5 scoreless innings (0 R, 4 H – all singles, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) for his second straight solid start, although the main story through 6 innings was 37-year old Iowa starter Kenta Maeda’s no-hitter to that point. 

Myers consistently hit 94mph with his four-seam fastball, while the gun had him at 96.7mph and 96.8mph for two pitches in the 4th inning.

RHP Sam McWilliams (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) conceded the game’s only extra-base hit – a double to open the 6th inning, ultimately escaping a 1st and 3rd situation with a swinging K.

DH Jeferson Quero’s 2-out single in the bottom of the 8th inning was Nashville’s 2nd hit of the contest and put a runner on 3rd base for only the second time in the game, with Seigler following with his clutch full count RBI single:

Back-to-back singles to open the game didn’t derail starting LHP Tate Kuehner (3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 5 Ks), who escaped three major jams (2-on, nobody out 1st inning; 2-on, 2-out 2nd inning; bases loaded, nobody out 3rd inning) while throwing on 4 days’ rest:

The teams combined to go 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position, with OF Garrett Spain’s RBI double constituting the sole hit with RISP for a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning:

RHP Zach Peek (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) impressed again to lead the stellar bullpen work, with SS Ethan Murray (impressive season OPS of .892) providing a valuable insurance run via his 4th inning solo homer:

• Spain had a 2-for-3 evening with 2 doubles, while DH Cooper Pratt also doubled and stole a base.
• With Luke Adams and Brock Wilken out injured, Zavier Warren (1-for-3) played third base for the first time in 2025. Following Peek in the bullpen, LHP Brian Fitzpatrick and RHP Bo Bowman each delivered a scoreless inning.
• Peek (0 R with 8 Ks in last 7 IP), whom the Brewers signed in the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 draft in December, is set to become a Minor League free agent at season's end. His steady 2025 progress from prior injuries reminds me of a similar situation with former farmhand (and future Major Leaguer) Max Lazar in 2023.

Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (42-27) hit the road, heading 4.5 hours northeast to take on Braves’ affiliate Columbus (26-40) for a 6-game set, with RHP Tyson Hardin (2.40 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 63 2/3 IP) expected to make his 2nd AA start on Tuesday.

Starting RHP Jaron DeBerry was making his 3rd start in 11 days, so was understandably limited to 3 innings (1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks – 52 pitches), handing it over to the bullpen with a 3-1 lead behind the SS Jadher Areinamo and DH Hedbert Perez solo shots.

The linked game report capably captures the Whitecaps’ comeback in the 5th inning (and the above Twitter/X highlights and so much more!) against RHP Bayden Root, aided by a tough luck HBP and bunt single.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• Crucial ground ball double plays limited the Timber Rattlers to one run in the 3rd inning and ended the 7th inning, with the team only producing one infield hit over the final 6 frames.
• Slugging C Marco Dinges exited after a 6th inning strikeout, so we’ll have to watch for his availability when Wisconsin plays again on Tuesday.
• Other than Areinamo (2-for-4), Luiyin Alastre was the only Wisconsin batter to reach base twice (HBP, infield single).

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (34-34) returns home to battle Royals’ affiliate Quad Cities (41-28), with LHP Anthony Flores (4.22 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 8.0 K/9 in 55 IP) scheduled to start Tuesday’s series opener.

Sunday’s series finale in Zebulon was an entertaining one, with 6 lead changes, including 3 in the final 1 1/2 innings.

Starting RHP Ethan Dorchies became the youngest pitcher (18 years, 243 days) to make a start in the 12-team Carolina League in 2025, retiring 9 of 11 batters in 3 impressive innings (1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks):

Two Columbia runs on 4 hits off RHP Jayden Dubanewicz (3 IP, 0 BB, 1 K) in the middle innings had Carolina in a bind until 2B Luis Pena legged out an infield hit with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, followed by Bitonti’s league leading 11th blast:  

Two walks, a double and sacrifice fly against LHP Bjorn Johnson gave the Fireflies the lead back at 5-4 in the top of the 9th inning and Carolina was down to its final out when OF Luis Lameda (1-for-3, double) drew a walk and C Edgardo Ordonez walked it off in a full count on the 8th pitch of his at-bat:

Mudcats’ Extras:

• The Fireflies had 4 stolen bases to the Mudcats’ zero but ran themselves out of a chance for more runs in a failed steal of home attempt to end the top of the 9th inning.
• OF Jose Anderson, SS Jesus Made and OF Tyler Rodriguez weren’t able to get their bats going on this particular day (combined 0-for-12 with 9 Ks).

Next week’s outlook: Carolina (39-28) takes a 5-hour drive north to Salisbury, Maryland to play 6 games against Orioles’ affiliate Delmarva (27-42), commencing on Tuesday.
