Brewers Minor League Link Report (6/6): Busy Thursday Sees Six Wins in Nine Affiliate Games

That’s a tough outcome for Cornielle, BrewerFanatic’s Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Month for May, who was perhaps on the cusp of promotion and instead lands on the IL. Also, 3B Mike Boeve’s excellent day ended in pain as he exited the second game of Biloxi’s doubleheader with a suspected hamstring injury.

In the resumption game, RHP Tyler Blackwood was done in by some bad luck (infield error, bloop single) which allowed 2 runs in, but 1B Tyler Black’s RBI double to open the bottom half of the inning positioned Nashville to likely tie it up. However, eschewing the bunt, the Sounds went K, ground out, ground out to strand him.

In the nightcap, 26-year old RHP Garrett Stallings (acquired in the Thyago Vieira trade 12 days earlier) made his first start (second appearance) as a Sound, delivering a respectable 4 2/3 innings (2 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks – 89 pitches (49 strikes)). The game was closer than the final score suggests, with left fielder Isaac Collins keying the rally from a 2-1 deficit with singles in each of the 5th (leadoff) and 6th (RBI) innings to come out with a 4-2 lead, before Nashville really poured it on. Here’s center fielder Joey Wiemer driving home Collins to tie the game 2-2 at that point.

Every spot in the lineup reached base at least once. Eight starters collected hits, including two for each of left fielder Collins (walk, RBI, SB), Wiemer (double, 2 walks, RBI), C Eric Haase (double, walk) and DH Francisco Mejia (2 RBIs).

1B Tyler Black (1-for-3, double, 2 walks, 2 RBIs) exited after doubling in the bottom of the 7th inning – hopefully just getting some rest with the Sounds leading 8-2.

Sounds’ Extras:

• RHP Janson Junk and LHP Nick Bennett made solid contributions, combining on 2 1/3 scoreless innings with 3 Ks.
• RHP Mitch White did in fact accept the outright assignment to Nashville (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks).

Friday’s outlook: RHP Taylor Clarke is the scheduled starter, aiming to continue to impress as he shifts toward a starting pitching role (3 shutout innings and 4 shutout innings in his last 2 outings).

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Two Comeback Wins Lead to Shuckers Doubleheader Sweep over Biscuits

After weeks of struggle, the Shuckers finally discovered the turnaround switch while trailing 3-0 in the 6th inning of the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader. Credit RHP Nick Merkel with giving the offense a chance by retiring 9 of 10 batters across the 4th-6th innings. Seemingly out of nowhere, three doubles (Lamar Sparks, Mike Boeve, Ethan Murray) propelled the Shuckers’ comeback in the final 2 innings to steal the 7-3 win. RHP Jacob Misiorowski had gotten the start, throwing 79 pitches (46 strikes) and allowing 3 runs.

The second game was more of the same for the road team, only more dramatic. Starting RHP TJ Shook put in an effective start, though Biloxi trailed 2-0 after 4 innings before the offense (which blew golden opportunities in the 2nd (bases loaded, nobody out) and 3rd (2-on, nobody out) innings) was able to start pushing runs across. DH Carlos D. Rodriguez walked, stole 2nd and scored on Boeve’s 5th inning single before SS Eric Brown Jr. tied the game in the 6th with a crushing homer (his first in AA ball).

Right fielder Noah Campbell came through with a 2-out, 2-run single to grab the 5-3 lead in the 9th, with RHPs Craig Yoho and Justin Yeager each navigating tricky 8th and 9th innings (stranding a runner at 3rd base in each frame) to close it out.

Shuckers’ Extras:

• Boeve had a terrific day, going 6-for-8 across the 2 victories with a double, RBI and run scored, but unfortunately exited with a hamstring injury which we’ll pray is not serious.
• RHP Bo Bowman, Yoho and Yeager K’d a whopping 11 batters in just 4 innings of work, conceding zero earned runs.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Brett Wichrowski gets the call for the fourth game of this week’s series, with Biloxi leading the series 2 games to 1.

We’re also blessed to have a 25-minute the Mehring/Lobner post-game podcast featuring comments from Manager Victor Estevez and starting RHP KC Hunt.

Hunt (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 5 Ks) was fabulous in his first-ever minor league start (16th career MILB appearance) and exited with a deserved 1-0 lead, but unfortunately the ‘pen couldn’t hold it and the offense woke up too late. Hunt totaled 70 pitches (45 strikes).

Most of the damage against RHP Tyler Wehrle came with 2 outs while trailing 2-1 in the top of the 8th inning, ultimately conceding 4 runs on 6 hits over 2 innings of work.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• On the positive side: SS Jadher Areinamo (3-for-3, walk, RBI, SB), RHP Yerlin Rodriguez (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks).
• Big negatives: Four errors for Wisconsin, while SS Gregory Barrios missed his third straight game

Friday’s outlook: RHP Will Rudy is the expected starter for Wisconsin, as they aim to extend their series lead to 3-1.

The big news of this game was the full season affiliate debut of 2B Filippo Di Turi (0-for-4 with 2 Ks), who is the fifth 18-year old (joining Josh Knoth, Manuel Rodriguez, Yophery Rodriguez, Juan Baez) on what is already the Carolina League’s youngest team.

Starting RHP Bishop Letson was unlucky to allow 2 unearned runs (error, passed ball) in the 2nd inning, but the RiverDogs grabbed 2 deserved runs on 3 hits in the next frame for a 4-0 advantage. Needing a win to claw back into the series, the Mudcats’ offense unfortunately just didn’t have it, with only 6 hitters reaching base (4 singles - 2 by veteran INF Jose Acosta, walk, HBP) despite only 6 strikeouts.

Friday’s outlook: Having dropped three consecutive games in Charleston, Carolina needs to quickly recapture its 6-win form from last week if it hopes to capture the first half division title.

As 17-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (the youngest pitcher in the 15-team ACL) navigated through heavy traffic (4 2/3 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 2 WP, 4 Ks), his comrades exploded for 9 runs in the first 5 innings to defeat the league-leading Dodgers.

This was a great 2024 debut for 2B Josh Adamczewski (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI), who had played in 3 games in 2023 but collected his first career hits here. He doubled to tie the game in the 1st inning and scored on a right fielder Gery Holguin (1-for-4, double, HBP, 4 RBIs) sacrifice fly as the team took the only lead the staff would require.

18-year old RHP Hayden Robinson (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks) further supported his case for a call-up to Carolina, while 3B Eric Bitonti (2-for-3, 2 walks, SB) and rehabbing left fielder Felix Valerio (1-for-2, double, 2 walks, HBP, RBI) had highly-productive days

Credit to RHPs Samuel Valerio and Dencer Geraldo for combining on one scoreless, hitless inning and stranding all three baserunners they inherited. This game also saw the return to action of 2B Tyler Rodriguez and left fielder Pedro Ibarguen after being absent from lineups for 27 days and 19 days respectively.

Despite the convincing win, the biggest story from this game may be the immediate exit of key January 2024 signing SS Jesus Made (who homered and doubled in his Wednesday debut) from the game after striking out in top of the 1st inning. We await news on his status, but will hope for a near-term return.

As to the game itself, although 9 runs may typically turn our eyes to the offense, I’d like to spotlight the organizational debut of 5’9” 18-year old starting RHP Wenderlyn King from the Dominican Republic (4 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks).

With the game knotted 0-0, King received a big assist when right fielder Handelfry Encarnacion gunned down a runner at home to end the 3rd inning. DSL Uno benefitted from an error to grab its first run in the 3rd inning, before 1B/3B Juan Ortuno’s 2-run double made them a bit more comfortable at 3-0 in the following frame. This was the 17-year old Ortuno’s organizational debut out of Venezuela.

RHP Ranwell Smith (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 1 K) collected the Win, benefitting from big games from 1B Joandrew Pena (2-for-4, HR, double, 3 RBIs), C Freider Rojas (2-for-2, 2 walks, RBI), Ortuno (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) and DH/INF Juan Martinez (2-for-4, double, RBI).

After being no-hit for 5 1/3 innings, super-signing SS Jorge Quintana and lesser-known center fielder Jose Anderson had had enough, with Quintana doubling to start the rally and Anderson homering to tie the game 2-2.

The same tandem each added RBI singles in the top of the 7th inning to break a 3-3 deadlock, part of a 4-run inning which gave DSL Dos its 7-3 advantage. Together, Quintana and Anderson went 4-for-10 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Anderson also contributed an outfield assist to end the 1st inning.

On the mound, January 2024 signings LHP Enderson Mercado and RHP Christopher Peralta (both 17 years old) were both excellent in their Brewers’ debuts, with Mercado covering 5 innings (very rare in the DSL) and Peralta 3 1/3, combining for this line: 8 1/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 7 H, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 1 balk, 7 Ks).
