On the bright side, C Jeferson Quero (1-for-3, double; caught 1 of 3 basestealers) and rehabbing Rob Zastryzny (1 IP – 3 ground outs and 1 infielder error) both played well in their respective returns from injury, while #9 batter OF Jimmy Herron (4-for-4, double, RBI) had his best game of the year.

Unfortunately, the Sounds trailed 5-0 before Herron notched the team’s first hit in the 3rd inning and 7-0 before scoring their first run in the 7th frame.

After Zastryzny played the opener role, RHP Garrett Stallings entered and had his 2nd straight difficult outing (6 IP, 7 R, 12 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks in 97 pitches), though I’m sure that Manager Sweet will pat him on the back for gutting it out to save wear-and-tear on the rest of the staff.

Sounds’ Extras:

• The player Quero tossed out at 2nd base was none other than old friend Joey Wiemer, while another old friend (Brian Navarreto) gunned down Nashville’s only steal attempt.
• In a way, Wiemer returned the favor by throwing out SS Freddy Zamora on the final play of the game (Herron’s double). Yes, we made the final out at home plate while trailing 7-2.
• RHPs Will Childers (1 IP, 3 Ks) and Jesus Liranzo (1 IP, 2 BB, 0 Ks) did their part with 2 hiteless, scoreless innings of relief.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Bruce Zimmermann (4.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 107 IP) is scheduled to make his 3rd start in 11 days, with the team needing a solid outing to snap its 4-game losing streak.

Starting pitchers LHP Tate Kuehner (age 24; 2.50 season ERA) and Antonio Santos (age 28; 2.02 season ERA) were dominant before the rain defeated both of them to send this scoreless game to Friday.

Kuehner faced the minimum of 12 batters over 4 innings, walking none. Both singles he allowed were eliminated on Pratt-Vargas-Burke ground ball double plays. For his part, Santos allowed a single (to OF Adam Hall), walk and HBP, while striking out 4 Shuckers.

To this point in the game, neither team has had an at-bat with a runner in scoring position.

Friday’s outlook: The teams are to resume Thursday’s game at 3:30pm CST with Knoxville coming to the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning. Following the conclusion of that game, RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.65 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 in 93 2/3 IP) is scheduled to start the night cap. This week’s series is presently tied 1-1.

Starting RHP Tanner Gillis (6 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks; 1.78 season ERA) was dominant, allowing only 2 of 21 batters to reach base, both on singles. He’s already earned one promotion this year, but the 24-year old (25 this Sunday) is making a case for another.

Every Wisconsin position player reached base via hit or walk, with Made (2-for-5, HR, 4 RBIs), C Andrick Nava (2-for-5, double, 2 RBIs), OF Hedbert Perez (2-for-4, double, walk, RBI) and OF Luiyin Alastre (2-for-3, walk, sac fly, RBI) leading the charge.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• RHP Stiven Cruz (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) was effective in relief, while LHP Anthony Flores (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 0 Ks) added entertainment to the final frame.
• Wisconsin Manager Victor Estevez was ejected in the top of the 5th inning while his team led 6-0, while the Peoria bench coach joined him after arguing about an automatic strike in the 6th inning.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Sam Garcia (4.00 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 9.7 K/9 in 78 2/3 High-A/Low-A IP) is the scheduled starter, as Wisconsin seeks to extend their series lead to 3 games to 1.

Carolina’s chance to end their 5-game losing streak in a doubleheader was scratched by Mother Nature. They trail this week’s series 1 game to 0 and now intend to play 4 games over the next 3 days.

Friday’s outlook: LHP Enderson Mercado (4.92 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 10.2 K/9 in 53 ACL/Low-A IP), the youngest pitcher in the Carolina League at 18 years and 138 days, is set to make his 3rd Low-A start.

Despite being out-hit 12 to 4 and failing to register any extra-base hits, the Blue Men kept it close. They even brought the potential game-tying batter to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out, down 7-3 in the top of the 7th inning. Unfortunately, a pitching change, back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out followed.

OF Jefer Lista (2-for-3, walk, RBI, SB) and 17-year old RHP Carlos Galindo (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks; 3.38 season ERA) were the team’s top performers, with Galindo covering the 6th through 8th innings.

C Yoneiker Lugo (1-for-3, walk, RBI) and OF Brailyn Antunez (1-for-3, walk, 2 SBs) also had productive days, though the squad fell to a record of 24-22.

18-year old RHP Bryan Regalado (1/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K) from the Dominican Republic started and made his professional debut, while RHP Brailin Aguirrez (2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 HBP, 1 K) had a particularly rough outing.

Our Gold squad dropped to a 22-24 record despite out-hitting their opponent 9-to-6, undone by a 1-for-11 performance with runners in scoring position. Down 5-3 by the top of the 6th inning, they put at least one runner on base in each of their final 4 frames, but weren’t able to push any more runs across.

Starting 18-year old RHP Derlin Garcia (4 2/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks; season ERA 2.12) kept the Padres hitless through 3 1/3 innings as Gold jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but allowed one run in the 4th inning and was hurt by a hit-by-pitch, bunt single and wild pitch as 3 runs were allowed in his final frame.

OF Kenny Fenelon (2-for-5, HR, double, 2 RBIs) and 17-year old RHP Gustavo Garcia (4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks; 3.86 season ERA) had the most impressive days, with Gustavo tossing the final 4 innings of the game.
