  1. I used to be of the mindset that if you bet on yourself to win, I saw nothing wrong with it. My understanding is it is common in European soccer and no one blinks an eye. But recently I read "Larceny Games" and the thing the author points out is that an athlete gambling can be indebted to a bookie (or dealer) leading to a compromised situation. This. I was half watching something on TV yesterday that said Rose was $400,000 - $500,000 in debt to New York mobsters. Bad scenarios there are nearly endless. Games that Rose played in, or managed, may have had an impact on other teams (division races, etc). And as has been stated so many times... gambling is THE cardinal sin in baseball.
  2. He should never get in. I refuse to allow this to be just one more case of "If you're athletic enough, or pretty enough, or rich enough, the rules don't apply to you." And I was a HUGE fan of his.
  3. No, this just isn't the place for your political nonsense. It never has been, nor should it ever be. It brings absolutely nothing of value to the conversation. try the Off Topic board. I believe there's still a place for politics there.
  4. Results should never be diminishing. If anything, results should accrue (for lack of a better term). I would guess that even 3 or 4 days missed would be due to travel and/or bruising to surrounding tissue from the needle insertion.
  5. Campus police, perhaps? My brother worked for the UWM police and they were a state agency; real cops with power of arrest and everything else.
  6. Some people are making mountains out of molehills. Even the thread title is a bit misleading. Braun's thumb isn't what I would call being "worked on." When I see "worked on" I think scalpels and sutures. Relatively speaking, Cryoablation is an extremely minor procedure as is Radiofrequency Ablation. The only difference is that one uses extreme cold (Cryo) while the other uses heat (Radiofrequency) to kill off/destroy nerves or nerve endings. Much like Epidural anti-inflammatory steroid injections, needles are inserted to very precise locations with the help of medical imaging. When the needles are in the proper locations, instead of injecting anti-inflammatory steroids, heat (or in this case, cold) is applied, destroying the targeted nerves. Often, over time, some or all of the nerves will grow back, requiring the procedure to be repeated. My wife recently had Radiofrequency Ablation in her lower back and if I had as many needles sticking out of me as I've had stuck in me, I'd look like a freaking porcupine. This really isn't a big deal.
  7. I can't help but wonder if some of Taylor's moves at the big league level weren't influenced by pressure from above to "win now;" Especially since those moves went directly against what he professed to envision and what he was doing down on the farm. I also can't help but focus in on the bottom line: 1. Brewers were terrible and had a terrible farm. 2. Taylor was hired. 3. Brewers built a strong farm, in very short order, which many later attributed to Jack Z, who was hired by Taylor. 4. Taylor was fired, Melvin was hired. 5. Brewers farm went back in the tank and Jack Z went to Seattle (or possibly the other way around). 6. Taylor went to KC. 7. Brewers are currently a tire fire... in a dumpster... on a train wreck. There may even be orphans aboard. 8. Seattle isn't much better. 9. KC is just flat-out ROLLING and appears to be well positioned to continue rolling. Maybe I'm over simplifying things and Lord knows I don't want to have a big argument over it, as most of you are way better equipped than I and some of you have raised it to nearly an art form. It's just that when I break it down as above, the only conclusion I can come to is that Taylor should have been given more time; and left alone if he was being pressured from above to "win now."
  8. I believe it was Dean that brought in Jack Z but that was about it. Dean Taylor was our worst major league GM. Everyone of his moves were insane other than the wickman for sexson trade. I'm very glad he is gone as the GM. Maybe as a farm guy but he was not a major league caliber GM. I can't agree with that, but I can't disagree either. The thing is, Taylor wasn't given enough time here to bring his entire plan to fruition. I felt like he was building for the future and he flat out told us he was willing to sacrifice wins at the big league level to rebuild the entire farm system. Taylor inherited an utter mess. Melvin inherited a strong farm. I don't think there's really any denying that. Everybody wants to credit Jack Z for it, but Seattle certainly hasn't done much under his watch and their farm system is ranked barely above the Brewers' farm. Meanwhile, in KC... Of course I can't say with any certainty that KC's successes are to be credited to Taylor, as he was listed as "Vice President of Baseball Operations/Assistant General Manager." As of this year he's retired but still serving as a consultant to KC. The bottom line, though, is that KC is currently light years ahead of the Brewers and the Mariners, organizationally speaking.
  9. I love BA. It will be a sad day when he moves on to bigger and better things, as the good ones always do. I think Rock is better than a lot of other teams' analysts I've heard, but he's gotten really predictable. So much so that I'm pretty sure if Rock were ever to call a Packers game, at some point he'd say "I think Rodgers ought to spike one in the dirt here." I too miss Trenni Kusnierek and not just because she's pretty; she was also very knowledgeable and good at her job. Much better than anyone they've tried to replace her with. Coshun is livable but nothing to write home about. Jeff Grayson is kind of Coshun 2.0 in my mind. Okay, but not great. Telly Hughes has grown on me but he's not in Trenni's league by a long shot. Davey is knowledgeable enough and makes good points but he's a terrible public speaker. I don't know if it's the camera or what, but his stumbling and stammering gets tiresome. Augie makes me want to put on my tinfoil hat and stab my eardrums with a fork. Repeatedly.
  10. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm working from memory here, and it is admittedly sometimes off. Here we go.... When Dean Taylor was hired, the Brewers' farm was one of the worst in all of baseball. At the time of his hire, Taylor said "If you expect the big club to win in 3 years, you've hired the wrong man. The farm is a disaster and this organization needs to be rebuilt from the bottom up" (or words to that effect). I was thrilled to hear this, as were many of my friends. Finally, a guy with the stones to tell it like it is and to do something about it! Shortly thereafter, the farm was pretty highly rated, as Taylor promised; but the big club wasn't winning, so Taylor was ousted and Melvin was hired. Dean Taylor ended up in KC, who stunk and whose farm was a disaster at the time of his hire. The Brewers improved in the following years, mostly due to the farm that Taylor built, but Melvin was given the credit. Fast forward to today: Here in Milwaukee, the big club stinks and the farm is below average. In KC, they're winning. A lot. And they're winning with players that Melvin let go and homegrown talent, mostly pitching. Even after trading away some of their good prospects to make their current run, Baseball America has them ranked 13th in organizational talent. I'm sure some of you can point out moves Taylor made that didn't pan out. Nobody hits every time. But looking at the big picture, the Brewers should have kept Dean Taylor. Unless my memory is crossed up... which is always a possibility.
  11. The funny thing is they push that QB stat on their bottom line constantly, like they think people actually think it's worth something. When they push that stat on their bottom line it strikes me more like they're desperate for people to take it seriously. I think it frightens them that people don't, especially as hard as they've pushed it.
  12. Homer, I'm sorry to know that you have a friend or family member in a position to benefit from such services, but happy to know that you're working towards making it happen. It really does work wonders for many people. Best of luck to all involved.
  13. I sent an email to Hormel Meats, actually praising one of their products (St. Louis Cut Pork Spare Ribs) and got an apology in the mail asking me to return the unused portion with a copy of the receipt bla, bla, bla. Unused portion? Ribs? Not likely.
  14. The mesothelioma ones too. Ive been in EMS for almost 10 years and have yet to come across anyone with that diagnosis yet I've known quite a few diagnosed with and/or dead from mesothelioma but I worked in a trade where asbestos exposure was extremely common. I'd almost be willing to bet that mesothelioma will be what gets me in the end.
  15. Well now you're definitely wrong... but only in thinking that I noticed what you actually said. Noticing stuff, or more accurately not noticing stuff, is just one of the many wonderful things about growing old. Thanks for clearing it up for me. There are no bones in ice cream.
  16. I don't want a guy with zero coaching experience in the bigs as our next manager right now. Why not? They seem to have already labeled this season a total loss and Jebus knows there's been more than enough complaining on here about "retread managers." I'm not asking to be a turd, I'm really curious as to why.
  17. I'm with you. I'm going to get out ahead of the usual malcontents on this one. I don't care who they hire; I'm calling for his firing right now!
  18. The season close to being lost? 19 games in...?
  19. Beltre strikes again... http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/rangers-angels-adrian-beltre-sends-garrett-richards-invoice-broken-bats-042515
  20. Gomez has quickly become my favorite current Brewer and quite possibly my favorite Brewer of all time. I love everything about this kid. He is an absolute joy to watch. For every "dumb" out that he makes on the basepaths, how many extra bases has he gained or extra runs has he scored? I hope to Jebus that Roenicke never tries to shackle him. Just turn him loose and let him do his thing, I say.
  21. [sarcasm]Fire everybody![/sarcasm]
  22. Belichik gets my vote.
