  1. LOL... I've been thinking the same thing. Listening to the broadcasts and reading the various game reports, this scoreboard changeover has been Huntsville's equivalent to the building of Miller Park. I'd love to see a picture once it's up, and I'm sure I will, but how can it not be disappointing? At this point, I'm expecting a three-mile wide high-def screen with simultaneous feeds of every baseball game on the planet. I hear ya clucking big chicken. As a "fan from afar" I know it's hard to relate, but we fans in Huntsville have put up with a scoreboard whose video screen hadn't worked in three years, and whose bulbs couldn't be replaced for some unearthly reason, thus making scoreboard reading a kind of code-breaking exercise. The original portion of it was as old as the stadium itself. We were ready for something new. I'm afraid, though, all the coverage has been detrimental. I think the anticipation will exceed the actual event. I was over at the stadium yesterday, since I don't live far from there and it's on my way home from work, so I took a look from my seat (I'm a season-tik holder). All of it had been erected except for the analog clock on top. My first impression is that "Gee that video screen looks small from behind home plate." It reminded me of the one Class A-Rome (SAL) has, and I don' t mean to denigrate here, but that is a nice ballpark. Also I look at the most important part of the board, the line score, and the teams are pre-ordained as "Guest" and "Home". Kinda cheap. For $300Gs, I'd expect to see the actual names of the teams, not this. At least, "Stars" instead of "Home". Even the old scoreboard identified us this way. But we'll see if I feel any different when all the bells and whistles are on Friday. If the names are spelled right. If the most fundamental of stats are displayed. And if there are any unexpected goodies from the control room. I won't hold back on my criticism and you'll probably see it all on my site, Saturday.
  2. Although this was not originally on the schedule, this doubleheader will be made up Monday, with the first game starting at 2:05 CDT I'm told. It will be picked up where it left off in the bottom of the 1st, with the second game to follow. There's a 30% chance of showers in the morning, clearing by noon with a high around 70°.
  3. The Stars with 19 hits in 136 at-bats in their current 5-game losing streak (.140). Rickie Weeks 0-for-20 after a 6-for-8 start. When will it end?
  4. I tried to listen in on the HD Mavs radio feed but it kept giving out on me every half of minute or so. I kept getting reverb and finally gave up on it.
  5. Bruso is listed as a DL on the Stars current roster.
  6. No doubt Huntsville Star historian David Weiser will recognize Scott Sheldon's name from his days in the A's organization I did right away. Mostly a utility player who did well in the field, mostly at 3rd base, occasionally successful in the clutch, esp. during the Stars' championship season in 1994.
  7. The entire list is on Baseball America's site, but I'm tracking former Southern Leaguers as they get snapped up by new teams during the off season www.starsboxscore.com
  8. Not enough thanks can be handed out to Jim Goulart and everyone involved in making brewerfan the successful and highly informative, interesting, and entertaining site that it is. I wish every major league club had a site as good as this. Mass Brew, you are simply terrific.
  9. Not sure if either Kade Johnson or Mike Kremblas are banged up, perhaps that's something David Weiser or others in Huntsville will verify for us. Certainly the Brewers didn't want to break up the Beloit catching corps while they're in the midst of their own playoff run. I have details Mr. Portnoy has asked me not to comment on on my web site, but I can tell you there is nothing physically wrong with either Johnson or Kremblas.
  10. Any idea on whether or not these games sell out? Are you kidding? Come on down!
  11. Adams walked the first two batters in the 9th, Gabe Alvarez and Scott Bikowski, but Carlos Maldonado hit his first pitch right at J.J. Hardy, who turned a 6-5-4 double play. That should be 6-4-3 of course. That dang 5 got in the way while typing.
  12. By the way, for those wondering about Liriano, he was lifted because of the lengthy rain delay. He threw 48 pitches, 25 in the 1st inning.
  13. Jeff Hundley (2-1) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to pick up the win and Brian Adams followed with a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save. Jeff Hundley was NOT the winning pitcher in this game. The box score, widely issued I know, is WRONG. I know because I was at BellSouth, Sunday. While I don't have my scoresheet in front of me, I can tell you Hundley pitched two innings and Dave Nolasco, who really gets credit for the win (he's now 3-2), pitched the 8th, and if memory serves me correct, gave up the hit that Hundley is charged with in the box. Thanks to a rain delay of one hour, 24 minutes, I didn't have time to update my site tonight, but I did have time to update the standings link. (www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html) Dave Krynzel, inserted into the game after the rain delay, tripled, walked, stole a base, recorded EIGHT putouts in CF, one of them a sensational catch in the 9th w/one out. Jesse Gutierrez hit a liner that looked like it would fall into the gap, but Krynzel, on his high horse, made another one of those highlight reel, diving, sliding catches at full throttle, that may have saved the game for Huntsville. Wow. Even the two Lookouts fans behind me gave him a hand, but who wouldn't. The next two hitters singled, so who knows what would have happened with the momentum of three straight one out hits. After Brian Anderson was retired, Conley hit an opposite field screamer to right that was foul by a foot. There's hardly any foul territory at BellSouth, so the drive would have been extra bases, perhaps tying the game, but Conley ended the game with a sharp grounder to Corey Hart. For my first trip to Bell South, I was treated to one of the most exciting, if not longest games I've seen this year. It started at 7:20 pm and ended after midnight, thanks to the rain.
  14. Needed some sleep, so no update on starsboxscore.com tonight. Sorry. The Stars had the bases loaded w/nobody out in the bottom of the 9th, down 6-2 on a pair of singles and a walk to Mike Kremblas, but Alejandro Machado (batting .197 in his last 10 games) struck out, Dave Krynzel (4-for-41 slump) struck out on a 2-2 pitch, and J.J. Hardy popped out to right. Krynzel left 6 men on base tonight while going 0-for-5. Birmingham wins the 2nd half title in the West and games 3, 4, and 5 of the playoffs, the latter two if necessary, of course. The Stars have now lost 8 of their last 10 and have scored an average of just a little better than 3 runs a game in their last 10 games. Outscored by Birmingham, 20-4. Looks bleak, I know, but the 2001 Stars, who went on to win the Western Division Title over Birmingham, lost 7 of their last 9 in the regular season and were swamped in the regular season series by the Barons. The 1985 Stars, who would win the SL Championship, lost their last 7 games and the first game of the playoffs. So all may not be lost. We'll see.
  15. With Fresno, he was 7-5 with a 3.11 ERA, striking out 77 and walking 11 in 84 IP. My bad. That should be San Jose. Fresno's in the PCL now. This world's changing too fast for me.
  16. The appearance extends his Triple-A scoreless innings streak to 26 and two-thirds. Jim Rushford with the winning base hit in the bottom of the tenth. That tops the 23 consecutive scoreless he started with at Huntsville, not counting the unearned run, April 21 vs.Birmingham. I'm anxious to see what he'll do with Milwaukee before the year is out.
  17. The transaction wire reports that Bill Hall has been promoted to Milwaukee.
  18. Wow, David. That's definately the best recap i've seen all year.... Great job Thanks! It was a memorable pair of games. The future just keeps getting brighter here.
  19. Here's hoping Matt Parker's arm doesn't fall off soon -- we continue to hold our breath until the Stars get a tenth pitcher -- Doug davis for one start doesn't count, and Mike Jones is still about two weeks away -- he'll have his first pitching session in a while on Friday... I was too much in a hurry to add that Jonesy will have his first throwing session for Stan Kyles on Friday and is at most, a couple of weeks from being back in the rotation.
  20. Meant to say August 5. Sorry.
  21. Wish I had an answer for you Mass Brew, but I don't know and I think it's too soon to really say. Anything else is pure speculation.
  22. The Stars and Bay Bears have been rescheduled for August 4 as part of a double-header. Defense was horrible tonight. Even J.J. threw a ball away, trying to get a force out at third, but to give him some credit, it was a tough play. Surprised by Knox's sudden promotion. Cause a bit of a shakeup in tonight's outfield. Varner in center, Mike Kremblas in right, and D.J. Clark in left.
  23. That's my guess, though I don't know anything yet, here. Maybe I'll find out in an hour when I go down to the Stars' office to get a ticket for July 5. Paz makes an excellent #2 or #6 hitter. Doesn't strike out much. Can go behind 0-and-2 and wind up drawing a walk. Decent in the field, though nothing like Machado, who I found out has made only 4 errors at 2b this season for Wichita. Machado has struck out in only 15-16% of his at-bats, much like Paz, and with a higher BA to boot, so I can see Paz going up to Indy.
  24. To repeat some throwaway stats from earlier in the season, from 1995 to 2002, the Barons had a 59-93 edge on the Stars. That should read 93-59, of course. Sorry. I spotted a lot of stupid errors tonight, in a great rush to get it all done and still get to work at 4 a.m. david
  25. Lefty Lee didn't have his best stuff admittedly, but in the like Kim Darby in John Wayne's Oscar-winning movie, had true grit. He was at his best when it mattered most Ugh. I gotta try and start proofreading more often.
