  1. I won a $500 research grant to go to Washington, DC over spring break from the UW History department. It may sound nerdy, but spending the week in the National Archives and the Library of Congress will be the best spring break I've ever had.
  2. The fact that some self-styled historian would deliberately alter a document for personal gain. I'm sure I'm in a small group of people who are really truly bothered by this, by as an aspiring professional historian, this is despicable. History is sacred, and changing it to tell a better story or a story that will make you some money is just downright contemptible. http://www.nytimes.com/20.../25/us/25lincoln.html?hp

  4. I'll confirm this. After being at the football game this afternoon, probably one of my favorite hockey cheers of all time... and I've been to a lot of games.
  5. That officiating crew (I'm assuming it was the same crew both nights, but I could be wrong) was utterly hopeless. The referees seemed to make a conscious decision to not call actual real penalties and only call non-penalties. Every time they called a penalty - on either team - it was a bogus call, but when there was actually a penalty committed, nothing. But what really stood out to me was the horrible job done by the linesmen of all people. How can you blow multiple icing calls, a play when the puck clearly hits the netting behind the goal, and multiple offsides calls all in one weekend? Linesmen make calls that are very binary, so to mess something up that has almost no grey area... just horrible. Wisconsin got hosed this weekend by the officials, pure and simple. And I'm usually an official apologist; usually when people are complaining about the officials I'm thinking in my head, "Oh, come on, they're usually right, they do a pretty good job." But not this weekend, no. Just awful.
  6. That's why I qualified by saying that while it's an advantage, it's not really much of an advantage.
  7. Buckylovesbeer, my roommates and I were laughing about that too. Those jerseys looked like practice unis. But we also thought that they might have a recruiting edge in the South. If you think about it, there is literally no other Southern hockey program, so if you're a high school hockey player from Texas, or Florida, or Louisiana, you might end up at AL-H because it's closer to home. That said, I'd still rather struggle to recruit in the North than have an edge in the South and get nothing from the North, because lets face it, hockey is better in the North.
  8. Apparently, they were for Diwali. They were rattling the windows and floor in College Library something fierce last night. The looks on everyone's faces in the quiet study room on the second floor were pretty funny.
  9. Every time I see this video, or the song comes up on my iPod it gets stuck in my head. It's the only song I don't actually get upset to have stuck in my head though. Teach me how to Bucky, Teach me Teach me how to Bucky!
  10. I was in Iowa City today. I am in no way bugged by that.
  11. Just saw a half dozen ESPN trucks and semis roll through campus. It's gonna be a big week!
  12. Actually, it probably wasn't out of quarters. The auto-changers spit out change so that all the coins remain at relatively the same level, otherwise you would run out of quarters very quickly because besides pennies, they're the most often distributed coin.
  13. A purely rhetorical question for Hawing because she knows the area so well seeing as she works there... but why did they choose Library Mall for the President's visit? I mean, it's a wide open space surrounded by five story buildings and is currently occupied by a lot of construction material. It seems like an odd choice to me. I would understand the decision a lot better if there wasn't so much construction going on in that area currently. Either way... pretty exciting to have the president on campus next week.
  14. Actually, I learned that factoid from Prof. McDonald of the UW History department. I'm taking his History 600 seminar (Crisis in Canada: October 1970) this semester. So I'll be spending a lot of time in the stacks this semester, which is really exciting. I love the Historical Society - it's a really spectacular library with a beautiful reading room and an absolutely stunning wealth of materials. Madison - and the entire state - should consider itself beyond lucky to have such an incredible history library.
  15. The Wisconsin Historical Society has the largest collection of Canadian historical and government materials outside of Ottawa. The University of Wisconsin does not have a professor who specializes in Canadian history. That's a lot of material that no one is really looking at...
  16. I don't really mean to quibble over this, but that reconstruct didn't really help the flow of traffic at all in my opinion. Instead of the left lane slowing down to allow those people in the ending lane to merge, now people in the right lane have to slow down to let the people merge from the entrance ramp and the people in the center lane have to slow down to let the people in the right lane merge into the center lane to avoid the mess in the right lane. That's how I've experienced it anyway.
  17. Last Sunday I officially moved out of a house with 5 girls and into a house with 5 guys... and after only a week, I can tell this is going to be way easier.
  18. I agree about the incentive system for getting to the games on time, as a student who usually shows up 30 minutes before kick-off. I did, however, think this year went a lot smoother than last year, but still not ideal... but let's be honest, this is the UW Athletic department... they'll always be making someone angry. The system for tickets my sophomore year ('07) was probably my favorite out of the three separate systems I've had the displeasure of experiencing... Freshman tickets were a lottery and everyone else was first come, first served.
  19. I feel like I've seen 4 Strikeouts in an inning a couple of times. And I also think I saw Ben Sheets 3 strikeouts on 9 pitches. Definitely was at the 18 strikeout game.
  20. I just got a new phone, and I'm still having trouble setting the ringer/alarm volume. Wow did it scare me this morning. Things should not be that loud at 5:45am.
  21. It was by far my most commented on facebook profile picture. All of my history major friends were very appreciative. Also... A very happy birthday to Gen. Burnside today (May 23)
  22. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/728158968a2c254267354e676c7d1f1bdd47027.jpg I imagine this one will be exceedingly easy, but since I was sporting this look a few days ago, I thought it was appropriate.
  23. Since you thanked me for patronizing your place of employment the other day, I suppose it's time to return the favor. Hope you enjoyed a beautiful day on the Terrace!
  24. I checked out No Quarter: The Battle of the Crater 1864 from the Wisconsin Historical Society the other day. I'd done a little research in 19th century newspaper archives about The Battle of the Crater for a paper earlier in the semester, so it seemed like a sign when I saw the book in the "new books" case in the library. The battle is really fascinating, actually. During the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, Union forces realized they were stuck only 450-500 feet from highly fortified Confederate lines. In one of those decisions that makes you think, "seriously?" the Union army proceeded to tunnel the 500 feet to the Confederate lines and pack the end of the tunnel with 4000 pounds of gunpowder. The book tells the story of the battle itself and it's outcome - the battle was ultimately a failure because Union forces charging the Confederate lines got caught in the giant crater left by the explosion and were slaughtered. It's a really interesting look at Civil War battle tactics as well as race relations in the Union Army. I'd highly recommend it.
