Talk about limiting the damage, starting LHP Nick Bennett allowed two hits, walked four batters, and plunked two others, all in three innings. Net result - one run allowed. Can't expect to dance that dance very often. He hadn't even turned 17 years old yet, and had posted a .919 OPS in his first ten professional games. Then came the lost 2020 campaign, followed by an .824 OPS in the Maryvale heat in his 2021 summer of shaking off that rust. The young man is likely an inch taller now than his listed 6'2" and well, excuse me while I grab extra napkins to control the salivating. With due respect to Brice Turang and Freddy Zamora, Garcia is the shortstop who will eventually plant himself in Milwaukee for the 8-10 year run. RF Hendry Mendez (I believe I saw he's the youngest player in the Carolina League at this time) reached base thrice. According to the game log, although it appears he ended the 5th inning on the field, third baseman Alberis Ferrer would not return to the field in the 6th. Upon pulling up the MiLB.TV video, Ferrer dove and knocked down a hard ground ball that would go for an infield hit. he would be hunched over after getting to his feet and was tended to by the training staff. Looked like he was trying to flex his right leg. Subscribers can go to the 02:23:30 hour/minute mark if curious. Announcers were very complimentary of Ferrer's athleticism while noting his early-season throwing troubles. Similarly, I failed to point out in the report for Saturday's games that stud prospect catcher Jeferson Quero left the game at an odd juncture, early in the bottom of the Fredericksburg 8th. So it was another venture to the MiLB.TV archive - 02:58:35 hour/minute mark, and oh my, Quero took a wicked foul-tip off the mask that jarred his hockey-style helmet completely, never left his feet, but was guided off the field. Nashville saved the organization from a Saturday wipeout, and did so in style. The Shuckers were not singing in the rain as their season-long undefeated streak finally came to an end. The Timber Rattlers' offensive woes caught up to them in terms of win vs. loss, while the Mudcats are finding out the Nationals' system has some Carolina League talent. We're going to return to including some additional links at the tail end of each day's report. Of course, the numbers will mean more in that regard as we get deeper into the season, but we already know -- Nashville is tied for 17th in the 20-team International League with just seven HR's through 11 games. On the flip side, the Sounds pace the league in ERA at 3.15. Through eight games, Biloxi also is the ERA leader in the eight-team Southern League at 2.94. The Shuckers despite the glamorous 7-1 start are middle-of-the-pack in most offensive categories. Despite having the 3rd lowest batting average in the 12-team Midwest League at .173 through eight games, Wisconsin batters have fanned the fewest times at 65. And oh yes, your Milwaukee Brewers have three affiliates leading their league in ERA (T-Rats at 2.52). A recent rough patch has the Carolina team ERA at 6.19, 11th in the 12-team Carolina League. Batting .258, Carolina batters are 2nd in the league with that mark. Because of his injury-impacted extended Mississippi State career, Ethan Small is already 25 and will be in his prime years with the Crew before any thoughts of free agency arrives. Isn't it awkward small-market fans need to consider such things? But we do, and yes, we're getting ahead of ourselves, but it sure appears that Small is lining himself up for a fantastic big league run. It is hard for long-time fans of this organization to wrap our collective heads around the pitching development machine we are following these days. So this is what it felt like to be a Braves or Dodgers fan the past few decades. Burnes - Woodruff - Peralta - Houser- Lauer all under Milwaukee team control through 2024. Aaron Ashby on hand, My goodness, how fascinating is it going to be to see what position player gold David Stearns and Matt Arnold will be able to net by spinning off the overflow of pitching riches. Why do I see things like Luke Barker coming for in Luis Perdomo with one out in the 9th after Perdomo had retired the last only batters he faced, and think something is up? Did Barker need the work, as he had Thursday and Friday off. It was a ten-run lead after all. Why not have Barker start the 9th? This is how my mind works, and I am not the better for it! Every batter but Corey Ray (0-for-5) contributed. Unfortunately when you are the only player not to have a night, you may get that sort of mention. This is Ray's last option year, does anyone see him sticking in Milwaukee to stay as of next April? Man, that first round of the 2016 MLB draft is going to go down in history as pretty much a mess league-wide with its lack of anything approaching superstar talent. That doesn't make Ray's career path any less disappointing. Weston Wilson's box score line sure is pretty. Wilson finally earns minor league free agency after this season if he is not added to the 40-man roster sometime in 2022. Wilson matches up nearly exactly with the responsibilities and talents of the Crew's Mike Brosseau, and hopefully he gets his chance in that role at the MLB level by next spring if not sooner. Yay for David Dahl heating up. As for a "missing" player like Sounds OF Jonathan Davis, who played a prominent role to begin the season but last saw action on Saturday the 9th - by no means am I saying this is what it is, but it would be surprising if we were notified every time a minor leaguer was impacted by Covid protocol, and I don't believe I've read anywhere how the MiLB testing precautions now compare to MLB's. Shuster is a Wake Forest product, but in my world, is better known for being out of New Bedford, MA, the former whaling capital of the world and my hometown. Shuster was taken by Atlanta five picks after Milwaukee drafted OF Garrett Mitchell in the first round of the 2020 draft. Let's see how that all works out when comparing the two careers down the road. For those who are aware of my Brewefan efforts from the start, I apologize for my fandom obsession with 2000-2001 big league Brewers RHP Allen Levrault who was from a neighboring town. Some may say it's mainly about development in the minor leagues (and to some extent, it is), but let's be honest, winning is fun, and there isn't a person in the Brewers organization or fandom that can argue with that. So while it would have been nice to see a Cubs "L" flying in Wrigley Field Saturday, you'll find the maximum number of "W's" within today's Minor League Link Report. The affiliates are now a combined 8-2 on the very young season. Do keep in mind comments are always welcome on each day's report. This is his first year as the lead voice in Pensacola. From earlier in the game, just give us all the Felix Valerio possible, you don't need much wrapping paper. LHP Andy Otero was effective (2 R, 8 K) in his four innings, sorry to low-light him here, but can we all agree that Pensacola's ballpark location is magnificent? RHP Abner Uribe's line - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K, and he can thank RHP Nash Walters for the zero in the run column. Walters, the oft-injured 3rd round pick out of a Texas high school in 2015, could have elected minor league free agency last fall, as he's now in his 8th season with the Crew and hopes to force a 40-man roster decision on them. He won't turn 25 until May. After allowing the AAA club to bask in their solo spotlight for a bit, it was time to peel back the curtain on a full slate of games for the Brewers' affiliates. Mother Nature had other ideas, but hey, an undefeated night is an undefeated night! Transactions: OF/IF Noah Campbell was promoted from High-A Wisconsin to AA Biloxi, providing much-needed depth after the recent Korry Howell and Hayden Cantrelle trades. The ultra-versatile Campbell was at Carolina for all of 2021 (.775 OPS), so for the moment at least, is bypassing the High-A level. 25-year-old LHP Scott Sunitsch was placed on the 10-day injured list at Biloxi. Sunitsch is apparently still working his way back from 2021 hip surgery, though it's possible this placement is unrelated. Due to the lost Covid season, Sunitsch last saw action at the two A-Ball levels in 2019 - 28 appearances, 26 of them starts. Tripp (1-0, 0.00) earned the win after working through three straight scoreless innings. He entered in the sixth and retired eight straight before walking a batter in the eighth. He also followed Moore who had worked through five innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Moore’s only blemish was a game-tying two run single given up to Maximo Acosta in the fifth. The Nashville Sounds dropped their second consecutive game after their Opening Night win. They'll no longer have the action spotlight to themselves as all four Brewers full-season affiliates begin play Friday evening. As will be our norm, your report kicks off with the transaction news for the day. Transactions: At AAA Nashville, RHP Alec Bettinger was placed on the ambiguous "Development List". But the 40-man roster and brief 2021 big-leaguer did not make it into any of Milwaukee's spring training games, so while it's optimistic that Bettinger has not been placed on a formal injured list, something clearly is amiss. While the Brewers will rarely comment on the roster status of farmhands, they normally will when a 40-man roster player is involved.
