Wilson Ballpark has been a boon for the home team in first season In their inaugural Carolina League season, the Wilson Warbirds are much better at Wilson Ballpark, leading MiLB in walks, earning promotions and drawing strong crowds despite road struggles By Paul Durham, Wilson Times As the Wilson Warbirds prepare for their next six-game stretch at Wilson Ballpark, it’s one of just four remaining homestands in the inaugural season for the Single-A Carolina League franchise. Following the six-game set against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, which begins Tuesday, July 7, the Carolina League takes a four-day break aligned with the MLB All-Star Game break. Wilson then plays three games at the Hickory Crawdads over the weekend and then heads to South Carolina for six games against the Charleston RiverDogs. The Warbirds are back at Wilson Ballpark from July 28 to Aug. 2 against the Fredericksburg Nationals. The last two homestands are from Aug. 11-16 against the Columbia Fireflies and Aug. 25-30 against Hickory. Wilson Ballpark has been big for the Warbirds, who are 26-16 at home but only 17-22 on the road. That’s the worst road mark for any Carolina League team currently above .500. Per Warbirds broadcast and media relation director Chris Edwards’ game notes from Sunday, the Warbirds have hit 41 of their 64 home runs at Wilson Ballpark, which ranks fourth in the Carolina League and 10th among all Single-A teams. Additionally, the team has scored 249 of its 446 runs at home, which ranks second in the league. WALKING WARBIRDS Edwards also reports that Wilson ranks first in all of Minor League Baseball (MiLB) with 521 bases on balls after drawing five free passes Sunday. Shortstop Brady Ebel ranks second in the Carolina League while outfielder Handelfry Encarnacion and infielder Filippo Di Turi are also in the top 10 in walks drawn. WILSON A HUB Since the season began April 3, there have been 37 roster moves by the Milwaukee Brewers that have affected the Warbirds. Eight of those were players going on or coming off the Injured List while three went onto the Development List. Two players — catcher Luis Corobo and right-handed pitcher Ayendy Bravo — were sent to the Arizona Complex League in late April but all the other players to have left Wilson have moved up. Two of those, catcher Eric Martinez and RHP Joshua Quezada, got a taste of Triple-A baseball with the Brewers’ affiliate Nashville Sounds in mid-May. Quezada pitched in one game and promptly came back to Wilson while Martinez was immediately put on Nashville’s Development List. Martinez spent more than a month in Nashville before going to the ACL and then back to Wilson on June 30. Both are currently on the Warbirds roster. Eight players have been promoted to the Brewers’ High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from Wilson — pitchers Garrett Hodges, Tanner Perry, Jayden Dubanewicz, Peyton Niksch and Jose Meneses and position players Luywin Alastre, Yannic Walther and Tyler Rodriguez. Twelve players have come to Wilson from Arizona in all but Rodriguez, Dubanewicz and Martinez are still here. JULY BIRTHDAYS There will be lots of birthday cake in the Warbirds clubhouse this month with six players celebrating their birthdays in July. In addition to outfielder Pedro Ibarguen, who turned 20 on July 2, pitcher Miqueas Mercedes will celebrate his 20th Tuesday, July 7, on the mound as the starting pitcher for the series opener against Fayetteville. The rest of the birthday boys for the Warbirds this month are pitcher Andrew Healy (23 on July 11), pitcher Hayden Robinson (21 on July 12), catcher Kevin Garcia (19 on July 20) and shortstop Brady Ebel (19 on July 25). Additionally, pitcher Melvin Hernandez on the Development List will turn 20 on July 30. Just missing the cut for July is pitcher Jarrette Bonet, who will be 21 on Aug. 1. WILSON BALLPARK FIGURES The Warbirds set a club attendance mark Saturday night with the Fourth of July standing room-only crowd of 3,840 but saw another record — the smallest crowd in 42 games at Wilson Ballpark — the following afternoon. Only 923 spectators braved brutal heat for Sunday’s 1:05 p.m. first pitch and most of them hung out in the shady areas of the concourse. Through 42 home dates, the Warbirds have drawn — according to their official attendance figures on each game’s box score — 87,284 spectators for an average of more than 2,078 per game. That’s slightly under the 2,123 the Carolina Mudcats drew last summer, their final one at Five County (now Nomaco) Stadium in Zebulon, per thebaseballcube.com.

Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transaction: RHP JB Bukauskas placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list On Saturday, Bukauskas threw five pitches and retired his only batter faced on a 104 MPH lineout to left field, stranding three inherited runners. I pulled up the game video archive, and there wasn't an obvious shot of Bukauskas being in pain at all. He fell behind 3-0 on non-competitive pitches before ending the at-bat on the 3-1 pitch. Nashville's score bug does not include speed readings. Final: ACL Brewers 6, ACL Guardians 5 Box Score and Game Log The A-Crew rode a five-run 6th inning to a 6-2 lead, where it remained until a Cleveland three-run bottom of the 9th that ended with runners on 2nd and 3rd, oh my. 21-year-old non-drafted RHP Caleb Nieman (Central Arizona JC) was very good in relief of starter Ma'Kale Holden. Entering with one out in the 5th, Nieman stranded an inherited runner and would toss scoreless ball in the 6th, 7th and 8th. Tasked with closing things out, Nieman was one out away from completing a scoreless 9th. Your game log review will show how precipitous that final frame then became, including the entry of RHP Ayendy Bravo who would walk two and throw a run-scoring wild pitch before escaping with a game-ending strikeout swinging. Holden only allowed two runs in his 4.1 innings, but danced with danger, walking six and plunking another. Center fielder Brailyn Antunez was 1-for-5, but his "1" was a 3rd inning home run that tied the game at 1-1. It was Antunez' 9th home run, tied for 3rd most in the league for the $1 million January 2025 signing. You'll want to review the log for that five-run 6th, of course. the big blow being an opposite field three-run home run to right for 19-year-old catcher Malachai Halterman, his first round-tripper as a pro. Congrats! Halterman singled earlier in the game and stole his 9th base in 12 tries. Halterman's next theft will make him the 7th Maryvale player with double-digit steals, as shown here for the 24-24 ball club. 18-year-old shortstop CJ Hughes, batting 3rd in the lineup, had four of the five team walks. Right-fielder Kenny Fenelon foul-popped out to end the top of the 9th and did not go out for defense in the bottom of the inning. Just a note in case there is a subsequent extended absence. Final: DSL Brewers Gold 7, DSL Orioles Orange 0 Box Score and Game Log The red-hot Gold squad is at 12-13, and .500 is within reach, that didn't seem a strong possibility a couple of weeks ago. 17-year-old first-year RHP Joan Gonzalez has now made six appearances in his pro career, including three starts. At this point in the season often a review of a pitcher's game log is helpful, and Gonzalez is showing signs of progression, having allowed only three earned runs over his four most recent outings, covering 16 innings (eight walks, 17 strikeouts). Second-year RHP Derlin Garcia, 19, faced one over the minimum over the final four innings, allowing just one lonely single. Just a masterful combination effort on the mound by the two youngsters. Gold batters worked nine walks, which proved helpful, as the team only had five base hits, although both catcher Moises Salazar (still just 16 years old, by the way) and switch-hitting 17-year-old infielder (DH'ing here) Josue Rodriguez both doubled. Salazar also worked two walks, joining third baseman Osiris Ramirez as players reaching in three plate appearances, while Rodriguez' double broke the game open in the 4th, a bases-clearing three-run line drive to center field. Final: DSL Tampa Bay 11, DSL Brewers Blue 6 Box Score and Game Log The now 15-11 Blue Crew saw the Rays' kids score eight runs in the 3rd, scored four of their own in the 6th to halve the deficit, but fell in the end. Surprisingly only two pitchers saw action for Blue, RHP's Carlos Galindo, 18 and Jordy Brache, 16. You'll want to review those two mentioned half-innings. Not sure how Galindo remained in the contest, there must have been several at-bats with small pitch counts so as not to over-stretch him within that one frame. As for the offense in the 6th, the inning began with two quick outs. Scintillating Leanders Matos, playing second base, showed he is not a cyborg, as he was 0-for-5 with two K's. Link Reporter Emeritus @Joseph Zarr took note of third-year DSL'er Frandy Lafond, who was in right field, batting 5th. On Tuesday, the traditional schedule returns with all seven affiliates in action, with the island teams playing morning ball and the other clubs under the lights. Looking forward to Tuesday: Should be upcoming stories out of Knoxville as both Blake Burke and Andrew Fischer travel to their University of Tennessee city, Knoxville, with the Shuckers. This will be Blake's second year in, as it was one of his first road trips after his 2025 midseason promotion from Wisconsin. It's Wilson's turn for a two-week stay at the friendly walkoff confines, and their Week Two begins Tuesday. Every MiLB affiliate gets one of these extended homestands. Plus, discussing the impressive bullpen performance over the weekend" Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "The Brewers continue to struggle with runners in scoring position and lost starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff yet again with more complications from his balky right shoulder, but the wins kept coming in during a 5-2 week. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe dive into the loss of Woodruff, Garrett Mitchell's remarkable week, more great work from the pitching staff, including a bullpen in flux, Joey Ortiz finding some success, a Cooper Pratt progress report and a look at the Brewers representatives at the upcoming all-star game (and the snubs). Also, does anyone know what the "can't block the plate" rule actually looks like? In Three Up Three Down (30:10), Aaron Ashby gets yet another win, Ortiz has a moment in the sun, home-run robberies galore and a scoring decision that looms large for Jacob Misiorowski. In Remembrew When (47:30), JR looks back at an all-time pitcher's duel back in 1963. In Todd's Take of the Week (53:15), they look ahead to this week's draft. Then, we hear a chat between Curt Hogg and Brewers prospect Frank Cairone (1:00:20), who was seriously injured in a car accident in early January but has bounced back to make his first professional appearance in early July for the Arizona rookie-league team.
