  1. Teams are generally "too cheap" to pay for any part of the stadium, not just the roof. Tax payers foot the bill, and I can't blame them, most of whom won't use the stadium, for trying to keep their property tax levee down. As for the question of the thread... I wouldn't be totally opposed to neutral site(s). Possibly an AL city and NL city splitting the games. As for the comment on Bud Selig... I think history is going to treat him much better than his contemporaries. Most of the things done on his watch have been very, very good for baseball long term.
  2. If he's not a believer that you have to win with small-ball, and he's not a cancer in the clubhouse, and he's not going to kill the bullpen, and he doesn't come with a big price tag, I'm good with it. For the vast majority of the time players win/lose, managers watch players win/lose. So, find someone with half a clue, and don't spend a significant chunk of the budget on him. Then let's move on.
  3. Wow... the only thing that I can think of is the players ultimately wanted him out. Every other reason screams for waiting until the end of the season. Doesn't it? I don't recall anything like this ever being done before. If he had lost the players, then I would throw my long standing Yost-support behind the firing. It's all about the leading of the team. If the team was no longer willing to follow him, then it's good that he's gone. Having said that... the next guy in line (after Sveum) is almost a sure-fire lock to do many of the same "idiotic" things that Yost did. Why? Because they (almost) all do. The chances of the love child of Bill James and George S Patton coming to the Brewers is slim and none.
  4. Any Brewers besides Prince and Gagne represented by Boras?
  5. Buc, the fact that LaRussa did it should give credence to the fact that ALL managers do some things at points of the season that just don't make sense to the many of the rest of us. Ned is no worse than most and I'd actually say he's probably better than most. I doubt that the people who want Ned gone will ever see it that way, but I think it's true. And more to your point... it's pretty much inconsequential in the grand scheme of things - even though things like that can irk all of us from time to time.
  6. If the Brewers don't absolutely collapse in the final month, I'll eat my shirt if Ned doesn't finish in the top three. It's one thing to hate Ned, but it's a bit delusional to think that he wouldn't finish in the top three. When the manager of the poster child for small market teams (ever since the phrase was coined) has the 2nd best record in the NL, he's going to get serious consideration for the top spot much less the top three.
  7. AMEN Brother! I hate those "since then" stats.... Pretty much everything that we use on a regular basis to review MLB stats is a "since then" stat. The only exception are career numbers which include everything the guy has done. It's perfectly valid to use "since xxx" assuming a reasonable number of ABs. If you really want to eliminate the "since xxx" numbers, then ignore the since April 1st numbers as well.
  8. I like that idea. It would then move CC to down to pitch against NYM on 9/1. They'd just have to skip somebody once to line CC and Sheets up to pitch in both Cubs series.
  9. This is a trend that I've noticed more this year than in past years. I don't know if it's a function of Sveum being back at 3rd base or some other factor. But, it drives me crazy. In general (and always in the 1st inning - unless maybe if the pitcher is coming up next), you shouldn't sacrifice outs for a single run to score. That is especially true when it won't even take a hit to score that run in subsequent ABs. Beyond the whole run expectency numbers (which are great - thanks rluz), it doesn't even pass the sniff test. If it's going to take the sacrificing of an out to get him home, then hold him at 3rd. There were no outs. If this is truly Yost's philosophy, then he needs to re-examine it. It's possible that he's just protecting his guy (in this case Sveum) again by saying he did the right thing (similar to saying Soup pitched great, Gagne had great stuff, etc). But, it has happened on several occasions. It needs to be corrected, and while I could care less if he admits it or addresses it as a mistake, I hope he recognizes that it is one and does something about it.
  10. If he'll sign for 3-4 years at $16-17MM per, I'd be all over that. Sign me up now. He'll be 33 or 34 at the end of that contract. And his injury history is mostly flukish stuff with almost no arm problems at all. By ace standards (which he is, and will likely remain for the life of a 3-4yr deal), that contract is very reasonable -- and only about 5-6MM more than we're committing to him right now. To me, that's an affordable contract for a team with a $90MM payroll. CC on the other hand could reach 6 yr / $150MM. There's no chance on that one. Trade Suppan for a bag of doughnuts, and free up some more cash, if necessary.
  11. You wouldn't come close to sniffing $22. Man... you do have it rough.
  12. The Cubs are 7.5 games up in the wildcard race.
  13. Did I miss something? All I heard was Ned saying was that he was going to keep it in house, and he compared the asking about it to that of a nosy neighbor being rude. Unless he said something else that I missed, we have a pretty wide gap between what we view as "crossing the line" and "horrible".
  14. From a distance it seems strange that a guy that won 14 straight division titles would need to have his "bashers stifled" by a local columnist. And it's more than a bit ironic that the Atlanta columnist is pointing to Ned Yost as a beacon of light shining on Cox's career. I mean, Cox should be viewed as about as good as you're going to get, I would think. And Yost is one of the most heavily criticized people in the state of Wisconsin. (He'd be a clear #1 if Ted Thompson wasn't here).
  15. No... actually some of us have been beating this drum for months. Besides, I found Yost's nosy neighbor analogy kind of funny.
