  1. Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 7, High Desert 4 High Desert Site Game Summary: Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Despite a huge night from Kade Johnson, the High Desert Mavericks dropped their second straight game, losing to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final score of 7-4 on Wednesday night at the Epicenter in Rancho. Johnson drove in all four runs and had a season-high four hits, but it wasn't enough as the Mavs fell to a season-worst, four games under the .500 mark. Anaheim Angel Aaron Sele made the start for the Quakes and went just four innings in his third rehab appearance for the Quakes. He allowed the Mavs to take the early lead in the first inning as Johnson knocked in Chris Morris for a 1-0 lead. The Quakes answered in the form of Casey Kotchman, who hit his first of two mammoth home runs on the night in the first frame to put the Quakes up 2-1. After the Mavs tied it at 2-2 in the third on another Johnson RBI hit, Kotchman went deep for the second time. This time, it was a three-run shot off starter Chris Saenz that gave the Quakes the lead for good. The Quakes added another run in the fourth off Saenz who lasted just 4.2 innings. Saenz (0-2) allowed six runs, all earned on six hits. Justin Gordon came on and allowed just one run, a solo home run to Nick Gorneault in the sixth inning, as the Quakes went up 7-2. The Mavs stormed back in the eighth off reliever Joe Torres. Scott Candeleria and Todd West reached with singles, and both came home as Johnson collected his fourth hit of the night to make it 7-4. Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer made his debut in the bottom of the eighth and was impressive. Backsmeyer struck out two men in a 1-2-3 eighth inning. The Mavs threatened in the ninth, as Jason Belcher and Froilan Villanueva had back-to-back singles. Torres (2-0) settled down and earned the win, as he got Ralph Santana to ground out, and Candelaria to pop up for the final out of the game. Johnson now leads the Mavs with 14 RBIs, and has hit safely in 11 consecutive games. The Mavs return home on Thursday to battle the Lancaster Jethawks in game one of a four-game series. Dan Hall (1-0) gets the start for High Desert at 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: 1B Brad Nelson still sidelined; no walks drawn by the Mavs... 3. Durham (Devil Rays) 2, Indianapolis 1 Indy Site Game Summary: DURHAM, NC -- The Durham Bulls completed a two-game sweep of the Indianapolis Indians with a 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon. The Indians (6-6), who swept the Bulls (7-6) at Victory Field last week, have dropped three straight. Tribe center fielder Jason Conti led off the game with a single. With two outs, Conti stole second then scored on a single by Mark Smith to put the Indians ahead 1-0. The Indians clung to the one-run lead until the fifth inning when the Bulls scored both of their runs to take the lead for good. Jay Canizaro led off with a double. Ruben Quevedo (1-1) then walked the number nine hitter Hector Ortiz. After Jason Tyner sacrificed the runners to second and third, both men came in to score on back-to-back singles by Chris Truby and George Lombard. Quevedo worked through jams in four of the five innings he worked giving up lead-off doubles in three of the frames. The righthander gave up five hits and walked four. Quevedo retired the side in order in the fourth. The Indians bullpen, which came in with a 2.49 ERA, turned in three shutout innings to keep the Tribe in the game. The Indians offense, however, couldn't put anything together after the first inning. Bulls starter Jeremi Gonzalez (1-0) retired 12 in a row after Smith's RBI single in the first. He left after six innings having allowed just three hits while striking out six. Conti and Smith were the lone bright spots for the Indians offense. Conti went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases while Smith's single extended his hitting streak to a team-high six games. Todd Williams and Matt Perisho worked the seventh and eighth for Durham, and Lee Gardner closed it out in the ninth for his fourth save. Gardner ended the game by getting Pete Zoccolillo to ground out to second. It was Zoccolillo's 10th-inning home run off Gardner last week that gave the Indians a win in the home opener. The Indians, who are hitting just .166 on the road, continue the nine-game road trip with the first game of a three-game series at Charlotte Thursday. 8. Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=35 David Weiser's Perspective from Huntsville: Last night I raised a point that aroused my suspicion......... As well as the Stars have pitched this early in the season (and all for a .500 record), they're overworked because of three extra-inning affairs they've had to play, and in danger of having it affect their performance down the stretch......... I took a count that confirmed my suspicion --- the pitching staff has combined to pitch more innings after 12 games than any Stars team in its history, and have surpassed the previous high my a good margin........ The 2001 staff pitched 110 1/3 innings. This year, they've thrown 122 innings........ The 2001 staff was 2nd in the league in ERA and had the 2nd best ERA among any Stars team in its history, but that team surpassed the previous record by only an inning........ The 2003 staff has thrown 12 more innings than the 2001 team. That's significant. How it affects them, with the probability of a few more extra inning games to go before the first half ends, will be something worth watching for. With an overworked bullpen, it's understandable that Matt Parker was called upon to throw three innings in relief of Derek Lee, tonight. He was the only one really able to go. Parker hadn't pitched since last Friday........ Parker specializes in long middle relief, so three-inning assignments aren't really foreign to him......... Parker, who now has an unbelievable string of 43 1/3 innings, in which he's given up just 3 earned runs going back to last July (that's an ERA of 0.62, since you expect me to do the math), picked up his 1st save of the season, and 2nd by the bullpen, with ease......... Lee, pitching in his 121st game as a Huntsville Star, tying a club record held by Mike Maurer (1995-97 Stars), lowered his ERA to 2.08 in pitching 6 shutout innings, getting hitters out as Derek usually does --- by spotting the ball on the corners and getting the other side to swing at tidbits......... Derek was at his finest. He threw an efficient 78 pitches, permitting only two runners past first base........ Ben Hendrickson, who was scheduled to start, was pulled last Sunday with a sore forearm......... Derek had a custom of not getting a lot of run support in the past, but tonight he was able to relax a little with an early 5-0 lead and concentrate on his game. The Stars scored on a bases-loaded walk to Richard Paz in the 1st, then added a four-spot as Ryan Knox drove one in on a fielder's choice ground ball and J.J. Hardy doubled in a run........ After Dave Krynzel scored on a wild pitch, Brandon Gemoll tripled in another run to give the Stars a 5-0 lead........ Gemoll is hitting just .222, but 6 of his 10 hits this season have been for extra-bases. Gemoll is a stocky kid, whose build reminds me of Rob DeBoer, who had awesome power --- until he got in a game. Then he would strike out almost incessantly........ Krynzel bounced back from his 0-for-7 Monday to collect three hits and score a pair of runs........ Paz had another great day at the plate and make me wonder why platoon him with Chris Barnwell. Paz has hit in 6 of the 7 games he's played in and carries a .360 average......... Knox continues to hit steadily, if not often. He's played in every game this season and hit safely in 10 of them. Wednesday, (1-0, 0.00) will try to continue a string of shutout innings, numbering 11 for now. He leads the Southern League in ERA and strikeouts at the moment and if he has a third brilliant outing, there should be some tongues wagging......... He had a roller-coaster season last year, but this year has been more coaster than roller....... The Rays will send Brian Stokes (0-1, 0.96). Huntsville Box Score: RHP Matt Parker came over in the Fernando Vina trade -- he's 24 years old now -- how about that streak David Weiser mentioned! Eight walks in addition to 13 hits for the Stars batters - beautiful! 12. Durham (Devil Rays) 14, Indianapolis 3 Indy was overdue for a clunker... Indy Site Game Summary: DURHAM, North Carolina -- The Durham Bulls (6-6) went batty on Tuesday night pounding an incredible 17 hits, including three home runs to defeat the Indianapolis Indians (6-5) by a score of 14-3. Six of Durham's nine starters had at least two hits in the contest as the Tribe fell to 2-4 on the road this season. From top to bottom the Durham lineup pounded out hits, and leading the charge for Durham, appropriately, was leadoff batter Jason Tyner. Tyner performed his duty to near perfection going 4-for-5, including a triple to leadoff the first, and scored two runs. Jay Canizaro, Ryan Jackson, and Chad Mottola all went deep for Durham. Jackson, who had only two RBI coming into the game, needed only a triple to hit for the cycle, and was a one-man wrecking crew in driving home a team-high six baserunners. Durham sent 11 batters to the plate in the third against Indians starter Francisco Campos (0-2), and scored six runs on six hits, including a three-run homer by the former Indian Mottola. Campos, who was pounded for nine hits and seven runs, lasted just 3.0 innings before being replaced in favor of Brooks Kiescnick in the fourth inning. Kieschnick, however, fared no better giving up four runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run shot by Canizaro, and three runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Jackson. The seven earned runs marked the first allowed by the Tribe bullpen in 15.2 innings. Durham's starting pitcher Carlos Reyes (1-0) pitched five innings allowing only one hit while striking out four to continue his dominance of Tribe batters in earning his first victory of the season. Reyes, who pitched five perfect innings last Wednesday at Victory Field in a game eventually won in the 10th inning on Pete Zoccolillo's two-run homer, has now pitched 10.0 innings against the Tribe allowing a mere one hit. Indianapolis scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning off Durham reliever Delvin James, the last of which came on a Mark Smith single to score Mark Budzinski. Smith, 2-for-4, extended his hitting streak to five games. The two teams will complete the two-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday afternoon when the Tribe's Ruben Quevedo (1-0) opposes Durham's Jeremi Gonzalez (0-0), first pitch is scheduled for noon. 14. A neat note from the High Desert staff: Monday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 16th, when the Mavs visit the Quakes in Rancho Cucamonga. Tuesday's matchup will feature Pete Smart (1-1) for the Mavs, against Ervin Santana of the Quakes. Barring more rain, first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 (9:15 Central).. On Wedneday, the Mavs will send right-hander Chris Saenz to the hill, as he'll square off with Anaheim Angels right-hander Aaron Sele, who is with the Quakes on a rehab assignment. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:15 (9:15 Central). Always fun when the Class A kids get a chance to go up against an established big leaguer. I remember last year when the Mavs pitchers had varying degrees of success facing a rehabbing Phil Nevin for a series.
  15. David Weiser wrapped up his Huntsville summary earlier today: Orlando held a 1-0 lead till the 7th....... Corey Hart, who is now 8-for-28 (.286) in his last 6 games, led off with a single off the Rays' 2nd reliever, Bartolome Fortunato. Richard Paz followed with a successful hit-and-run single. As Hart aggressively slid in at 3rd, Amado Guzman's throw from center skipped into the dugout, allowing Hart to score and Paz to go to 3rd....... Cristian Guerrero then delivered Paz home with a single to right for a 2-1 lead. In the 8th, after an error by Paz on a ground ball and a bunt single by Gabby Martinez, Matt Childers hit Victor Diaz on the shoulder with a pitch to load the bases. Childers then hit Dan Grummitt, forcing in a run, tying the game, and for the 2nd time in 4 meetings this season with Orlando, an error made the difference between a win and a loss for the Stars. In the 12th, Mike Adams struck out Gomes on two sliders and a fastball with runners on 2nd and 3rd, to end the inning. In the 14th, Brandon Gemoll led off with a double over Amado German in center. Paz walked. Then with Guerrero at the plate, 3rd baseman Jorge Cantu broke back to the bag, allowing him to sneak a single through the vacated spot, sending Gemoll to 3rd........ Of Guerrero's 10 hits this season, 7 of them have been infield singles....... Mike Kremblas struck out on a fastball at the knees, but the Stars took the lead again, 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Chris Cosbey. The Stars were just one out away from victory in the bottom half of the inning, but Felix Escalona doubled and Matt Diaz followed with a single and it went into the 15th inning and the rest is history. Despite a couple of extended chances, J.J. Hardy's hit streak ended at 10 games, leaving Justin Bowles' record of 14 at the start of a season, safe for another year........ If gold is 5 and silver is 6, Dave Krynzel gets the platinum sombrero tonight for going 0-for-7. His average plummets to .161....... One of his teammates said Krinkles is a slow starter. I wonder if that's true?...... Guerrero is 7-for-18 (.389) in his last 4 games. Derek Lee (1-0, 3.86) gets a spot start Tuesday, his first of the season........ It will be his 86th as a Huntsville Star and his 121st appearance, tying the club record held by Mike Maurer........Derek's career 3.23 ERA as a Huntsville Star ranks as the 3rd best of all-time. Paul Stewart made his 2nd start of the season for Pawtucket tonight, but did not get the decision against Ottawa........ He did fine until the 5th inning when he allowed a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3. He gave up 8 hits in 5 1/3 innings and struck out one.
  16. Indianapolis Media Notes: Every so often, we'll copy a few of the new notes from the Indians' gameday press release... TODAY'S PROBABLES: RHP Francisco Campos (0-1, 5.25) vs. RHP Carlos Reyes (0-0, 2.45) Wednesday at Durham - RHP Ruben Quevedo (1-0, 2.89) vs. RHP Jeremi Gonzalez (0-0, 5.14) TONIGHT: The Indians begin their longest road trip of the season, a nine-game affair that begins with two games in Durham. The pitching matchups will be identical to last week when the teams met for two games at Victory Field. The Tribe swept that series by scores of 4-2 and 6-4. Last year, the teams split 12 games including the six played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, although the Tribe recorded a two-game sweep on the first trip of the year. The Tribe has won four straight over the Bulls dating back to Aug. 3-4 of last year. SUNDAY: Charlotte snapped the Tribe's four-game winning streak by a score of 6-5. Bill Hall went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI for the Indians, but Charlotte's four-run third inning was too much to overcome. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Francisco Campos makes his third start of the year. Campos faced the Bulls last Wednesday in the home opener allowing just five hits in 6.2 innings. Two of those hits were infield singles. Campos set the Bulls down in order three times. Durham starter Carlos Reyes was perfect through five innings before three straight hits plated a run in the sixth. NOW THAT'S RELIEF: The Tribe bullpen has worked 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings, and has a 1.17 ERA for the season. The last run allowed came in the sixth inning of Thursday's game against Durham. KEEP THE BAGS PACKED: The Tribe opens the season with 14 of its first 19 games on the road. The Indians are on their longest road trip of the season, a nine-game trip to Durham (2), Charlotte (4) and Louisville (3). The Tribe ends the month with a six-game homestand. The Indians are 2-3 on the road. WARMING UP: The Indians hit just .173 on the first road trip of the season, but batted .288 on the homestand to raise the season average to .225. Brady Clark (now in Milwaukee), Mark Smith and Wilton Veras all have four-game hitting streaks. Smith batted .667 on the homestand with a 1.111 slugging percentage. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Thursday at Charlotte - RHP Pascual Coco (1-1, 2.70) vs. TBA Friday at Charlotte - RHP Jamey Wright (1-2, 7.43) vs. RHP Jon Rauch (1-0, 1.50) Saturday at Charlotte - RHP Mark Guerra (0-0, 2.25) vs. LHP Mike Porzio (2-0, 2.70)
  17. Shortly after the draft in early-mid June.... There is little need for the Brewers to differentiate between the Helena and Arizona rosters at this time.
  18. Brewerfan's # 5 high school product, Massachusetts' RHP Jeff Allison, made his season debut only on Monday, just another indication of the disadvantage kids from northern climates are at in the overall development process. Probably a moot point here in terms of Brewer interest, since Allison will certainly fall by mid-way in the first round, but doesn't really qualify as a Top Two pick: Most eyes were on Jeff Allison, a senior pitcher who is regarded by Baseball America as one of the top pitching prospects in the country. Yesterday, he guided visiting Peabody to a 7-0 win over Greater Boston League rival Everett. Allison's pitching line read 7 innings, 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, and 17 strikeouts. He also helped himself out at the plate, breaking up a 1-0 game in the fifth by hitting a grand slam. ''Every time he pitches this year he'll have an entourage of scouts watching,'' Peabody coach Ed Nizwantowski said. ''Today, he had 23 scouts there and they had him clocked at 94 miles per hour.''

  22. Orlando (Devil Rays) 4, Huntsville 3, 15 innings Huntsville Site Game Summary: Awesome, awesome game summaries from Stars' staff...thank you! www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=34 David Weiser provides some overnight analysis: After praising the Stars bullpen last night for the best 10-game start in its history, we get this display Monday night....... Three hit batters and two balks makes you scratch your head........ The three hit batters by Matt Childers hadn't happened since Eric Dubose did it on September 9, 1998 in a playoff game vs. Mobile.......... I stopped at 1997 in finding the last time two balks were committed by the Stars pitching staff in a game. I'd wager it was 1988, though --- the year umpires really cracked down on pitchers and were calling a lot more balks than pitchers had ever been accustomed to. Bruce Walton committed 3 in a game in April that season....... But despite this, the pitching wasn't really bad tonight. The bullpen only gave up 2 earned runs in 9 innings. Pitching coach Stan Kyles said, "Childers made the pitches he needed to, to get out of some tough spots, and (Mike) Adams was splendid. He threw 39 pitches, 30 for strikes........" Unfortunately, Adams may have been overworked tonight. Kyles admits that his bullpen has been overworked, and still they outperform....... So who could you have gone to in the 15th, Stan? Your only option was Matt Parker, so why wasn't he sent out? He hadn't pitched since Friday! He has a 1.29 ERA in 7 innings this young season........ Well, it's spilled milk now. Adams breaking pitch to Jonny Gomes was a bit flat and the mistake cost him as Gomes, the first batter in the 15th, parked the pitch over the left field wall to end the game. In the 2nd, Gomes hit a Diggins pitch that towered over the foul pole in left. Umpire Damian Beal, back for another season, had a good vantage point and made the call. Kyles has a point though. The staff certainly has thrown a lot of innings so far this season...... The Stars have played 3 extra-inning games of the 11 played this season --- 13, 14, and now 15 innings........ I'm going to take a look at the innings the staff has pitched this season and compare it to seasons past and see if there is indeed some significance to it........ All these innings may ultimately have an affect down the stretch on these arms. David may have a bit more later. His notes are a labor of love and we appreciate the analysis; hopefully he doesn't feel the need to burn the midnight oil each and every night, especially after a 15-inning affair...
