  3. Technically not a transaction, but we'll post it here because it was buried so deep in the Link Report for Sunday's games: From www.starsboxscore.com: LHP Derek Lee will start for Huntsville on Tuesday. Ben Hendrickson reportedly has some tightness in his forearm.
  4. David Weiser's Huntsville Update: After 10 games, I usually do a simple chart comparing batting marks and ERAs over the history of the club. The results are on the Standings link, which is provided just below....... What came as no surprise to me, considering the pre-season hype, is how well the Stars pitching staff is doing at this phase. I expected it from the rotation........ The bullpen was beyond my expectations. Ten games into the season, the bullpen has a 2.40 ERA --- the best in the 19-year history of the franchise....... The overall ERA isn't that bad either --- 2.85 --- best since 1996 and 3rd best in the Stars history........ You'll notice by looking at the chart that in the Stars two best seasons by their overall ERA, they had some bats backing them up, hence they got off to 7-3 and 8-2 starts in 1996 and 1995 respectively........ Starsboxscore.com Link: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html The .226 overall batting average, though, isn't the only reason the Stars are off to a mediocre 5-5 start........ They have committed a record 21 errors after 10 games, as well......... Makes you want to look a little closer, so here we go......... The Stars have given up 42 runs, of which 31 were earned. Six of those ten games, the Stars pitching staff gave up at least one unearned run. In three of those games, the Stars lost........ One of those games was today's 7-1 loss, and in spite of all those errors, Pedro Liriano would have lost this one, anyway........ But errors made the difference between a 7-3 start and a 5-5 start. In a tight game, errors by RF Cristian Guerrero and 3B Corey Hart made a big difference in a 7-6 loss to Jacksonville in the 4th game of the season, and last Wednesday, RHP Ryan Miller's error allowed two unearned runs in a 6-5 loss to Orlando....... Better hitting might have resulted in better run production, but we can't pretend that into happening. What did, or rather, did not exist for the Stars was the defense that usually saves a lot of games over the course of a season. The rotation, after ten games, has an ERA of 3.33. When is Liriano going to get on board? Without him, the ERA drops to 2.50....... Yeh, it's quibbling, but it's a difference of almost a run....... But Pedro has had two bad starts, giving up 7 earned runs in 9 IP and walking 8......... In the 2nd, he ended the Stars scoreless string at 23 when Mike Collins doubled in two runs and pitcher Eric Stults tripled in Collins for a 3-0 lead....... The first of the Stars' season-high five errors helped Jacksonville take a 4-0 lead........ Trailing 4-0, the Stars scored their lone run when J.J. Hardy drew a 1-out walk. Hart ripped a double to center, his 2nd of the year, scoring J.J....... Ryan Gripp followed with a deep drive to left-center field, but Jason Repko just has some kind of speed, and he was able to make a tremendous running catch, saving a run........Guerrero grounded out to Collins to end the inning........ Over the final five innings, the Stars advanced only two runners past 1st base. Hardy hit a hanging breaking ball to left in the 7th inning to extend his hit streak to 10 games, marching toward the club record of 14 at the start of a season. Ben Diggins (0-1, 2.52) gets the call, Monday against Orlando's Jose Veras (0-0, 1.00) for the start of the Stars very last trip to the House of Mouse. Next year, the Rays move to Montgomery, making the bus drivers in the league very happy (and G.M. Bryan Dingo, as well). It will also be the final look at the Florida teams for the Stars this season.......... There's a fan contest underway to name the new team and I wish I could find out when it ends, but the Montgomery Advertister has got to be the worst on-line newspaper on the web........ The Stars return home on Friday for a 4-game series against the Birmingham Barons........ Now that his early heroics are over, Ryan Knox has struck out 11 times in 34 at-bats, 10 of them in his last 29 ABs........ Joel Alvarado, our starting catcher now that Brian Moon is gone, is 0-for-13 with 4 Ks. I've got to find out how he is at erasing baserunners from Mr. Portnoy. Even if we get Brian Foster from High Desert at some point in the season, it won't make up for Moonie's defense. Alvarado got off to a 2-for-11 start last year after the Stars got him from Ogden, August 4.........Ryan Miller has taken the lead among the middle relievers, who as I've mentioned are off to a record start. After four relief appearances and 8 1/3 innings, he is unscored upon and has struck out 10 batters........ Derek Lee will start on Tuesday for the Stars. Ben Hendrickson reportedly has some tightness in forearm. It will be Derek's 121st appearance as a Huntsville Star, tying the club record held by Mike Maurer.

  9. Thanks to biedergb for his earlier recap post on this one (see separate thread). High Desert 10, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 9 High Desert Site Game Summary: Mavs Hang On in Wild One ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks rallied three times to upend the Lake Elsinore Storm by a final score of 10-9 at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Daryl Clark?s second triple and third hit of the day broke a sxth inning tie, giving the Mavericks the win in the rubber game of the three-game series. Clark, who went 5-5 on Saturday and missed a cycle by a triple, went 3-5 with two triples and a double, driving in two runs to give him the club lead with nine RBIs. J.M. Gold came out of the Mavs pen to get his first win of the year. Tony Stavros and Bobby Bystrowski went the final three innings, holding the Storm scoreless. Bystrowski collected his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth. The Mavs went up 1-0 on Kade Johnson?s third homer of the year in the bottom of the first. The Storm scored five times in the second inning off Mavs starter Danny Kolb. Jon Benick?s second homer of the year made it 1-1. Mike Richardson hit his second homer of the year, making it 3-1, and Danny Bravo had a two-run triple to make it 5-1. The Mavs rallied, scoring four times in their half of the second. Brian Foster led off the inning with his fourth homer of the season to make it 5-2. The Mavs tied it as Ralph Santana had an RBI single, and Todd West hit a two-run, two-out double. The Storm took the lead in the third with two runs, but saw the Mavs tie the game at 7-7, when Froilan Villanueva picked up a two-out, two-run single. After Kolb was chased, Gold came on and worked a scoreless fifth, but allowed a run in the sixth, when J.J. Furmaniak knocked in Joseph Hastings with a sac fly. In the bottom of the inning Clark?s two-run triple gave the Mavs the lead for good at 10-8. The Storm got one back in the seventh, but Stavros got out of a jam to preserve the lead at 10-9. The Mavs are now 4-6 and just two games back of Lake Elsinore (6-4) for the top spot in the South Division. The Mavs hit the road to face Rancho Cucamonga on Monday, as LHP Pete Smart (1-1) faces Ervin Santana at 7:15 from the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. The Mavs return home on Thursday to face Lancaster. Now, a new (and rare) Link Report Feature: BLAST FROM THE PAST!Actually, all this occasional feature does is call up a nice player profile piece from perhaps long ago on a particular farmhand. Unfortunately, the current Brewerfan Article Crawler Archive began just last fall, but we still know where to go to find an oldie but goodie and dust it off... In this case, a sure way to earn kudos from Ye Ol' Link Report is to be an undrafted, unheralded kid who manages to make his mark within the Brewer organization. Although it looks like High Desert is settling on 26-year-old newcomer and converted outfielder Bobby Bystrowski as their closer, it's nice to see that RHP Tony Stavros is off to a nice start once again this year, coming off one heck of a 2002 campaign. Hit the way-back machine, Mr. Wizard.... www.beloitdailynews.com/702/stav19.htm
  10. The Brewers placed RHP Jon Steitz on the Beloit disabled list with an undisclosed injury, retroactive to April 10th. Taking his spot is 21-year-old LHP Jeff Housman, the 33rd round 2002 pick out of Cal State-Fullerton, moved up from the Helena roster and extended spring training. Housman really struggled last year with Ogden, and we're guessing that LHP Craig Breslow must still be feeling the effects of his March illness to not get the call this time around. Steitz had yet to pitch in a game this season. It will be interesting to see if the 2001 3rd round pick, coming off a disastrous 2002 (0-11, 7.62 ERA ), has anything at all to offer when he returns to action. Remember, the Brewers cut 2000's 3rd round pick, LHP Dane Artman, this spring, after only 123.2 innings in the system.
  11. Kane County (A's) 7, Beloit 5 Fielder showboats after HR #4 in six games... Beloit Site Game Summary: Not sure if the Snappers management is limited for space here, but I guess we'll take what we can get... www.snappersbaseball.com/...43d0a22044 Kane County Game Summary: More details here... Beloit, WI ? The Kane County Cougars won their sixth straight game with a 7-5 victory over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Bill Murphy (1-1) picked up his first Midwest League Win, pitching five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jared Burton entered the game in the 9th inning; surrendered two inherited runs, but got Mark Ernster on a line out to end the game. The Cougars tagged losing pitcher, Jason Baker (0-1), who gave up seven hits and four runs over five innings. The win for the Cougars improves their record to 9-1, marking the best start after 10-games in the team?s 13-year history (8-2 in 1999). The Snappers started the game off in a positive way by taking their first lead of the series. The second batter of the game for Beloit, Callix Crabbe, blasted his first home run of season. The Cougars quickly rebounded, scoring three times in the top of the second inning, thanks to RBI?s from Jason Basil (2 RBI), Francis Gomez (2 RBI), and Nick Rogers. Kane County took advantage of the Beloit bullpen, scoring three times off LH reliever Jeff Housman. In the sixth, Basil reached on an error with runners at first and third to plate home the fifth run. Gomez picked up an RBI on a fielder?s choice and Kory Wayment singled home the final run of the day for Kane County. Prince Fielder greeted Chris Shank by blasting a lead off home run in the sixth inning. Shank would get ejected in the eighth inning when he plunked Fielder in the right leg. The Snappers used that energy and mounted a two run ninth, but the rally fell short. John Baker and Brian Stavisky each had two hits to pace the offense, and for the second time of the series, all nine starters reached base. The Cougars and Beloit complete their four-game series tomorrow night at Pohlman Field ? game time is 6:30 PM. Chris Mowday RHP (0-0, 2.45) goes opposite Tom Wilhelmsen RHP (0-0. 5.79). The Snappers still maintain a nice Transactions page. Jeff Housman was a new addition to the roster; we'll provide details in the Transactions thread.

  13. Charlotte (White Sox) 6, Indianapolis 5 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (6-4) four-game winning streak was snapped at the hands of the Charlotte Knights (5-4) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-5, as the Tribe was unable to come through with yet another heroic comeback on the last day of a five-game homestand. The Indians and Knights each hammered out 11 hits in the contest, and left a total of 12 men stranded. The difference in the ballgame, however, turned out to be two unearned runs that crossed the plate for Charlotte in the top of the third inning. Immediately following a leadoff single by Willie Harris, Tim Hummel hit a ground ball to Tribe shortstop Keith Luuloa for what appeared to be the makings of a double play, but Luuloa's throw was off the mark and rolled out into right field allowing both runners to advance, and eventually score. Harris scored on Joe Borchard's RBI groundout while Hummel crossed the plate on Ross Gload's two-run double which also plated Mario Valenzuela. Gload scored the fourth and final run of the inning on Jamie Burke's two-out single, and on the same play Anthony Sanders was tagged out at home plate by Jason Conti's relay throw to end the inning. Charlotte then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on solo home runs by Harris and Valenzuela off of Indians starter Jamey Wright (1-2) to push the score to 6-2. The Tribe responded with a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a triple by Conti followed by a single by Bill Hall, both with two men out, but Hall was then caught stealing on a pick off throw from Charlotte starter Mike Porzio (2-0). The Tribe managed to plate two more runners in the seventh inning off of reliever Matt Ginter, but Dave Sanders and Edwin Almonte combined to shut the door over the final 2.2 innings for the 6-5 victory as Almonte recorded his fourth save of the year. 18. Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=32 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: 22 INNINGS OF GOOSE EGGS Hoover Met, home to the Birmingham Barons, is comfortably regarded as toughest hitter's park in the league........ It's too early to cast such claim on the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, but this is a quirky park that is 420' to straightaway center -- deeper than any major league park. Dave Krynzel played this park the last two nights with plenty of room in back of him....... The lines are short. The right field porch is 315'. With a 5-foot fence. But the lines shoot out similar to Camden Yards in Baltimore. A lot of room in the gaps, since there is not much foul territory as an accommodation to the fans........ This park was almost custom-made for the Suns (best ERA in the Southern League last year) and the Dodgers' minor league philosophy......... It was built to be a pitcher's park....... But it works both ways. The Stars found the Grounds a more friendly home to them than the Suns....... For the second straight night, the Suns were blanked by the heralded Stars' pitching staff, and in so doing, the Stars take over 1st place in the Western Division......... It also extends a scoreless string by Stan Kyles' pitching staff of 22 innings, going back to Wednesday. If there was any question before whether Mike Jones belongs in Double-A, he settled it for the moment....... Walking only two batters, and pitching shutout ball for 6 innings giving up 2 hits, Jones showed he's there to stay to fans and critics alike...... Matched up with a pitcher of similar background -- a low A ball hurler last year, regarded by the Dodgers as their best RH pitching prospect, making the leap to Double-A, Jones easily outdueled and outlasted Edwin Jackson, a turnaround from last Sunday's Duel I match-up. The Stars got all the offense they needed when J.J. Hardy poked a 2-2 pitch out of the park to left in the 1st inning....... That kept alive Hardy's hitting streak at 9 games --- the 6th best hitting streak at the start of a season in Stars history (the list is on the standings page)........ Jones would retire 9 of the first 10 hitters, but in the bottom half of the 1st, he pitched himself out of trouble when Koyie Hill singled and stole 2nd base off the manager's brother, Brian Moon's replacement, Mike Kremblas, but Jones struck out Tarrik Brock to end the inning. Ryan Knox made it 2-0 in the 3rd inning when on a hit-and-run play with Krynzel on first, Edwin Jackson's pitch got away from Hill. Knox alertly scored........ The Stars put the game in the freezer in the 7th inning........ After Derek Michaelis botched a play on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd, Knox poked a 1-2 pitch into right field scoring Richard Paz and Kremblas to make it 4-0.......... Corey Hart bounced a 2-out pitch up the middle, scoring Knox to make it 5-0........ Brandon Gemoll, who has done rather well in the clutch, delivered a 3-1 pitch into the right field corner for a double, scoring Hart to make it 6-0........ Cristian Guerrero followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring. Hart continues to make an adventure out of playing 3rd base......... In the bottom of the 9th and one out, with Matt Childers trying to put it to bed, Corey made a great diving stab on a ground ball by Brennan King, but he threw the ball away. Childers struck out the next hitter, Michaelis, but Kremblas let the 3rd strike go off his glove, allowing Michaelis to reach 1st and moving King to 3rd. Needing a double play to preserve the shutout, Childers got Michael Collins to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Pedro Liriano (0-1, 5.40) takes his turn tomorrow against Eric Stults (0-0, 19.29) making his first spot start of the season........ Alfredo Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list. Gonzalez, last Saturday, pitched one inning against Luis Martinez and left after making warm-up tosses in the 2nd inning. The Stars have now made 17 errors in their first 9 games........ This had been done only five other times in club history after the first 10 games, so they are within two of tying the record of the 1991 team that made 19 errors, 10 games into the season....... Hart has six so far. Ryan Gripp and the departed Brian Moon each have a pair. David steals my soon-to-debut Alumni Page thunder and provides the following updates: Chasing after ghosts of the past........ Jeff Deardorff went 2-for-3, tripled and scored last Wednesday for his new team, the Rochester Red Wings as they defeated Scranton in the 2nd game of a double-header, 2-1......... Paul Stewart started the opener for the Pawtucket Red Sox on opening day April 3, going 3 innings and giving up an unearned run, striking out 1 and walking 3. To date, the Pawsox have played only three games because of nasty weather. Four games were snowed out and three were rained out....... Billy Hall and Steve Scarborough are hitting .091 and .050 respectively for the Indianapolis Indians....... Bobby Darula is hitting .308 for the Reds' top farm team, the Louisville Bats......... Bucky Jacobsen is 3-for-10 with the Tennessee Smokies........ Creighton Gubanich is 2-for-12 for the Chattanooga Lookouts. The Stars became a Brewer affiliate in 1999. Only three Brewer farmhands opened a Stars' season with longer hitting streaks than J.J. Hardy's current nine-game streak. As David noted, he's keeping track of who J.J. is trying to catch: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

These 24 guys are going to get some serious national pub before all is said and done this summer -- enjoy the ride... Brief ESPN Re-Cap for now: JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- RHP Mike Jones earned his first win of the season with six innings of shutout ball as the Huntsville Stars defeated the Jacksonville Suns, 7-0. Jones (1-0) yielded the only two hits of the game for Jacksonville, a single in the first inning and a double in the fourth, and struck out four and issued two walks for the win. J.J. Hardy connected on a solo home run in the first inning for Huntsville. Ryan Knox hit a two-run single and Brandon Gemoll added an RBI double during a five-run seventh inning rally for the Stars, who have won two in a row. RHP's Tim Crabtree and Matt Childers combined to no-hit the Suns over the final three innings. Koyie Hill and Tarrik Brock each had a hit for Jacksonville. Edwin Jackson (0-1) surrendered two runs -- one earned -- and four hits over four innings to take the loss. Huntsville Box Score: 2B Rich Paz on base three times; new catcher Mike Kremblas with two hits, and how about Jones, Crabtree, and Childers hooking up seamlessly with Kremblas after only meeting him Friday night? 22. Lake Elsinore (Padres) 10, High Desert 7 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The wind certainly played a roll in Saturday?s game, as the Lake Elsinore Storm beat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 10-7, at Mavericks Stadium. Mike Richardson?s first home run of the year snapped a 6-6 tie in the ninth inning, as the Storm took the lead for good. The ball barely cleared the fence in left field as the wind was gusting between 30-40 MPH all day long. Both teams had their fair share of wind-aided hits, Richardson?s home run was just the most damaging. The Storm took the lead in the first as Freddy Guzman?s pop-up to left field also cleared the wall for his first homer of the year and a 1-0 advantage. The Mavs countered with Daryl Clark?s two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the inning. The Storm got two runs off Mavs starter Brian Mazone in the third, but the Mavs would tie the game at 3-3, as Brian Foster, who had four staples put into his head less than 24 hours before, knocked in Kade Johnson with an RBI single. The Storm took a 5-3 lead in the fourth, as Josh Barfield crushed a home run to center field off Mavs reliever David Nolasco, and Joe Gerber added an RBI hit. They added one more in the fifth, as Danny Bravo knocked in Eddie Serrano with a two-out hit. The Mavs rallied for one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Ralph Santana?s RBI double off the wall in the eighth, scored Scott Candelaria. Johnny Raburn?s groundball brought home Santana for a 6-6 tie. Aaron Dean (0-2), who had retired all four men he had faced coming into the ninth, gave up the homer to Richardson and then three more runs as the Storm took a commanding 10-6 lead. Clark led off the ninth with a home run to left off Mike Wodnicki that just cleared the fence, to bring the Mavs to within three. Wodnicki (1-0) settled down in the ninth, and after walking Foster, got Jason Belcher to ground into a double play to end the Maverick threat. Froilan Villanueva grounded out to earn Wodnicki his first win of the year. Clark finished the day 5-5 with two homers and three RBIs. The Mavs are now 3-6 and three games out of first, behind the 6-3 Storm. The final game of the series features Mavs right-hander Danny Kolb (0-0) against Josh Reynolds (0-0) at 3:05 on Sunday afternoon. Clark's big night gets his average to .421 (16-for-38); mix in five walks for a .488 OBP. Not sure how high Clark's ceiling is, but Daryl is probably the best corner outfield prospect in the system right now. We checked with High Desert, and while a few teammates call him D.J. and he's not bothered by it, Daryl probably works best for him, so we'll go with that on the Link Report going forward.
  23. Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the Circle City, the Indianapolis Indians (6-3) staged yet another late-inning comeback to remain undefeated at Victory Field in 2003 with a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Knights. The Tribe is 4-0 on the homestand. Indians starting pitcher Mark Guerra was roughed up early allowing three runs, two earned, in his first two innings on the mound before settling down to retire seven of the next 10 batters faced, including three strikeouts. 6'11" Charlotte starter Jon Rauch, the tallest pitcher in Major League Baseball history, held the Indians in check throughout the early innings of the ballgame. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth inning when catcher Cody McKay belted a solo home run to right field, that the Indians finally were able to put a run on the board and cut the score to 3-1. Rauch lasted six innings allowing five hits and one run while striking out five, and was relieved in the top of the seventh by lefthander Arnie Munoz. Munoz retired McKay leading off the inning, then gave up a single to Mark Smith and hit DH Pete Zoccolillo with a pitch. Gary Majewski was then called on to face second baseman Bill Hall with one out in the inning and runners on first and second. Hall reached base on an error by shortstop Jorge Nunez, and Majewski walked Tribe third baseman Wilton Veras with the bases loaded on only four pitches to bring the Indians to within one run at 3-2. Majewski was then able to pitch out of the jam without any further damage by striking out Steve Scarborough and getting Jason Conti to pop out to Nunez to end the inning. Brooks Kieshnick, who had already pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings, returned to the mound for the eighth inning and struck out leadoff batter Willie Harris. After Tim Hummel was hit by a Kieshnick pitch and center fielder Joe Borchard singled, Cliff Brumbaugh topped one back to Kieschnick for an inning-ending double play. Kieschnick (1-0) earned the first win of his career. The Tribe then went into the home half of the eighth still trailing by a run. Mark Budzinski and Scott Seabol led off the inning against Majewski with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with nobody out. McKay then picked up his second RBI of the game with a ground ball out to short. After Mark Smith was hit by a Majewski pitch and Seabol advanced to third on a wild pitch, Zoccolillo stepped to the plate and looped a single over the outstretched glove of second baseman Willie Harris to score Seabol and give the Tribe their first lead of the ballgame at 4-3. Ryan Kohlmeier relieved Majewski with one out in the eighth and retired the only two batters he faced to end the inning. Roberto Giron took the mound for the Tribe in the ninth and, with the crowd on their feet, retired Charlotte in order striking out the final two batters for his third save of the season. Shane Komine (2-0) earned his second straight win, dominating the Snappers with seven scoreless innings. Komine allowed six hits, one walk, and tied a professional high with eight strikeouts. The Cougars took advantage of two walks and one error to score three unearned runs in the fourth inning. Kory Wayment and John Baker drew walks with Nelson Cruz reaching on a third baseman?s error. Brian Stavisky plated home the first run with an RBI ground out, and Jason Basil had the biggest hit of the game- a two-out, two run single to left field. In the sixth inning, the Cougars took a 4-0 lead with a run off reliever Gabe Mendoza. Cruz started the rally with a single to left, advanced to second base, and scored on Stavisky?s RBI single to right field.
