Yeah I can definitely believe Rowand wanted to go there. Heck, Zito went there even was Bonds was there because the money was so good. A guy will play anywhere if the money is right.

 

No doubt they're gonna be horrible. At least when the Brewers sucked we didn't give huge money to mediocre players (Jeffrey Hammonds aside). Teh Seligs kept their wallets shut and they were laughin' all the way to the bank. I can't think the Giants F.O. are doing the same.

Living and playing in one of the world class cities in America can't be entirely bad. Even if the team is horrible, they live in San Francisco. It's not like going to play in Montreal, Kansas City, Pittsburg, or until recently Milwaukee. But Billy Beane must get a chuckle watching Zito suck across the bay.

Like sheethead said, the dude gets to live in San Francisco and make a crapload of money, I'd love to be so unlucky. I'd trade in my job in a heartbeat for one at a crappy organization in San Francisco that paid me 3 times what I get now (yeah, I know, he was limited by arbitration before).

I saw some of their game during commercial breaks today, and Zito was in the 83-84 range with his fastball. That's not a good sign for them. Cain and Lincecum are obviously studs, but it's going to be a rough year for them.

Sure, but you can't put him in your shoes, you have to put yourself with him? If you were a ballplayer like that, would you sacrifice a little bit of cash to play for an organization that's not currently a complete embarassment? Hard to say unless you were actually in that position, but from the outside looking in, I can't imagine the extra ~3% in salary being worth it.

It depends on what his expectations are. His thought process could very well be, if the team is good, I made a good decision and if the team is bad, I'll get traded to a contender in a pennant race eventually. Heck, there's a decent chance he could be the team's All Star representative.

A standing-room-only crowd of 14,084 packed Chukchansi Park for the game, the Giants first visit to Fresno since 2003. The Giants struck first in their first time at-bat, but Fresno responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning against San Francisco starter Barry Zito. After the big leaguers took the lead back with two runs in the sixth inning, the Grizzlies responded with a run of their own to knot the score at 3-3. In the seventh, after Travis Ishikawa reached on an error, Fresno's Ivan Ochoa doubled to deep-center to score him with what proved to be the game's deciding run. Zito suffered the loss, while Fresno's Billy Sadler earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. The packed house also got a surprise following the 4th inning on the Chukchansi Park field. Grizzlies managing partner Chris Cummings was joined by Giants president and managing general partner Peter Magowan for a special ceremony where the two men signed a renewal of the Player Development Contract between the Grizzlies and Giants. The relationship between the two clubs, which has existed since the Grizzlies inaugural season in Fresno in 1998, was extended for two more summers, through the 2010 season. The announced crowd of 14,084 eclipsed the previous mark of 13,970 established on August 31, 2006 when the Grizzlies defeated the Portland Beavers 7-1 in their final home game of the campaign.
