Looks like the Red Sox are taking chances this year of Penny and Smoltz panning out.

Smoltz to Red Sox

They really just need one of them to pan out with Beckett, Dice-k, Lester and Wakefield already set in the rotation.

I wonder if they are going to try him in the starting rotation or put him in the pen. We all know he won't be a closer because of Papelbon, but I wonder if he will be used as his set up man?

I'd be surprised if Smoltz would sign on for that. He has always wanted to be a SP, even when he was dominating as a closer.

I was secretly hoping we were talking to him, but alas. I don't know that he would be a good signing for us, but I would have been excited all the same. Purely biased excitement.

I'd love to have spent that much on Smoltz to take some heat off Gallardo and Parra.

Yeah, seeing that deal, I wonder if Melvin was just rebuffed by Smoltz (or if he even contacted him).

Baldelli also signs with the Red Sox on a one-year deal.

That's a couple of nice moves by Theo & Co.

This could be a huge steal. I don't know how serious Smoltz's injury is/was or how he is progressing.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I was surprised that no sports writer attempted to link us to Smoltz. He would of been a good fit as either a starter or a closer. I am happy with the Hoffman signing. Now lets hope that Melvin works some magic and gets a solid starter.

A none-to-happy interview with Chipper Jones about Smotlz's departure;

A. For Smoltzy! That's what I don't understand. That's what's frustrating. I'm trying to be as diplomatic and as upbeat as I can possibly be and it is being made very hard on me to be that way. John Smoltz has been one of the faces of this franchise for 20 years. There's no reason for him at 41 years old to be playing anywhere but here.

Chipper's right. Smoltz only cost at the most, 10 million this year. I know they are trying to rebuild, but Atlanta should have ponyed up the dough.

Shouldn't Padres' fans be saying the same thing, though, about Hoffman?

I don't hate the Yankees for paying market (or above market) value for players.

I do hate the Red Sox for obtaining players at below market contracts. (They've become the new "it" place to play for players looking for one year deals and a chance at a World Series.)

Not sure how this is below market. There's a very good chance Smoltz pitches fewer than 100 innings. Few teams can risk $5m on that in this market.

The reason has to be the guaranteed money for Smoltz. From yahoo sports, via MLB Trade Rumors, the Braves were only offering 3 million guaranteed while the Sox had 5.5 million guaranteed. The Braves offer with incentives was around 12 million verse the 10 million from the Red Sox.
