elliptical/home gym question

hey folks, my dad wanted me to look into a piece of cardio equipment for his new house. It's got a small area for a home gym setup. I'd like to put one piece of equipment in it. He's seen the Bowflex Treadclimber infomercials and is convinced that is what he should get. He is weary of ellipticals because he doesn't like the hand poles that move (remind him of uncomfortable 1980s Nordictrack ski-machines). I suggested a similar-sized elliptical called the Nordictrack ACT. Both have small footprints and have a low impact. Has anyone tried (or known of someone who has tried) either machine? I get nervous with the Bowflex equipment because the reviews I've found are very hit-or-miss.

You don't need to use the "poles" on an elliptical, I often use the stationary handles. I have an upper-end Schwinn model (great deal on craigslist), and it has held up very well.

This is a great website that reviews ellipticals and treadmills. I used it to get a treadmill and am very happy with the selection. They have the "review" section and "best buy" section. The review section has reviews by company. The best buy section is broken down by their top rated machines by price range.
