I know, "Hader is the closer", but would almost have rather he be pitching to the lefties Votto and Moustakas, and let Williams get the 9th against the bottom of the order. Of course, if guys get on, it gets a little hairy when it comes back around.

Yeah, this is an interesting discussion. I agree with your reasoning, but I'm not sure the marginal matchup advantage is worth deviating from the defined roles. There's probably a hard-to-quantify trade-off there.

I thought that was a double off the bat. Nice play by Yelich, great to see the defense coming through to make that a non-stressful inning.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

This team is fun.

This team just has something. I just want to see it when all parts are full go. With a full roster

Maybe that will be late September and playoff time. Or maybe it will never happen

Let’s just try to hold on tonight.

If San Diego hadn't just completely collapsed the last 2 weeks I'd agree this could be a crushing loss, but I think that having caught one team for a playoff spot relieves a lot of the tension. They might still talk about trying for the division, but there is a consolation to make it not seem nearly so dire.

Agreed, if I’m a Reds fan I’m feeling pretty good about the playoffs. Nobody expects them to pass Milwaukee. Even a sweep leaves a 4.5 deficit which is hard to overcome.

SD schedule is brutal the rest of the way, I think the playoff spot is theirs to lose.

Well, the Reds have had their late-inning lead struggles this year. Let's hope that shows up again tonight.

This isn't that bullpen anymore.

Results are looking pretty similar.

Yep…..I mean really brutal

I get what you are saying, but both Williams and Hader, especially with the way they have pitched lately, are pretty matchup proof.

Williams has a .451 OPS against vs RHB, and a .747 OPS against vs LHB. Hindsight is great, but Joey votto is a pretty good LHB.

Oh man...Antone just came off the DL today

Williams had his issues against left-handed hitters early in the season. He's been much better of late.

Do you take Garcia out for jbj in the ninth?

Let's see what they do with the sticks this inning, and see if/where Garcia is due to bat if potentially needed in the bottom half.

I think it is a totally different calculation with a high-K pitcher on the mound.

Yeah, and he’s someone the Reds desperately need in their bullpen. He’s been a fun development success story, unfortunate with the injuries.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

He only made it about 1/4 of an Axford.

Reds broadcast talked about how he emotionally struggled when injured the first time, now this. Really tough break for him, and for sure looked like throwing arm injury.

Yeah, you gotta feel for the kid.

I still can’t believe the Reds just gave away Raisel Iglesias this past off-season, but I’m sure glad they did.

For a team that viewed itself as a playoff contender, that move made zero sense. But then the Reds have been a rudderless ship for awhile now.
