AAA Nashville gets us started with the first of their two games today in St. Paul, with the teams square 2-2 in their series. RHP Caleb Boushley (5.54 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 6.6 K/9 in 26 IP) starts the opener, while 3B Abraham Toro has a 24-game on-base streak.

A win today for Carolina would give them a 4-2 series victory away at Delmarva. RHP Jacob Misiorowski (3.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 14.1 K/9 in 7 IP) makes his 5th start of 2023. Is this C Matt Wood's (.308 AVG, 1.002 OPS in 84 PAs) last Low-A game before a deserved promotion?

Misiorowski looking very good today. Command for the most part has stayed strong through 2 innings. Hopefully he can carry it over to the third inning today.

That’s Caleb Boushley’s 4th straight solid start, exiting after 5 innings with a 3-1 lead. Eddy Alvarez and Abraham Toro have reached base 4 times, including a homer and RBI double, respectively.

RHP Gus Varland has entered and immediately run into trouble. Hold on men!

Varland's rehab stint has not been very pretty to watch. He didn't pitch well in A+ and hasn't looked good in AAA either. The time is running thin for him to figure things out. In his current form, I don't think he's roster-able for the Brewers.

And he just gave up a 3-run HR to blow the lead. Just brutal for him.

The pressure of trying to make it back to the MLB club is probably too much. Maybe they can milk it -> keep him on MLB injured list for another 6 weeks or so.

I don't think they can do that unless they put him down for another injury. Don't you have a limited amount of time to be in the minors for a rehab assignment?

Dominant performance from Misiorowski today. 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO

46 pitches, 30 strikes. That will absolutely play.

Yeah, they’d have to claim some other physical set-back. There’s also a minimum number of days he needs to be on the MLB roster this year or else his status will continue into 2024.

Gets two quick outs and that will be it for him. New season high in pitches and innings pitcher for Misiorowski. Impressive performance from him.

Down 4-3, Blake Perkins and Jon Singleton walked to bring Keston Hiura to the plate with 2 outs in the final scheduled inning.

But now they’re throwing Hiura high strikes. 0-2 count. And then he hits an outside pitch to center field for the final out.

Tough loss. Lace ‘em up and play another 7 innings in a few minutes.

Really hoping that Matt Wood gets promotion news after this game. A 2-run single here gives Carolina a 2-0 lead.

After 2 straight walk-off defeats, AA Biloxi needs a win to salvage a 3-3 series tie in Montgomery. RHP Christian Mejias 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 in 21.1 IP) gets today’s start. 3B Tyler Black is 8th in OPS (.965) in the Southern League, tied for second him homers (5) and leads the league in stolen bases (16).

The one thing I noticed with Varland in both his stints in Wisconsin and Nashville:

His 97-99 heater looks extremely level-planed and flat.

If we juxtapose this to the tailing winding heat of the opening Chicago series, I think it's fair to ask:

Where have all the cowboys gone? Ummm, no that's not it! Where did all that movement go? In the inning I recently watched of his at Nashville, he was struggling to get the off-speed stuff over the plate. So hitters did what hitters do: they sat on the heater. And, with little to no movement or rise, they hit him hard.

Tanner Shears gives up a 2-run HR to the first batter he faces in the 7th inning and Carolina have themselves a tied game.

Shears gives up a triple to the next hitter. Delmarva now have the go ahead run on 3rd with 0 outs in the 7th.

Bullpens in the system having a difficult time today.

Sounds are up 6-0 in the 1st inning of game 2 but they only have 1 hit.

BB, K, K, BB, BB, BB, HR, HR. Already into the Saints bullpen after 8 batters.

High-A Wisconsin has lost all 5 games in Peoria this week and sends RHP Joseph Hernandez (3.57 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 22.2 IP) out to try to end the skid. DH/2B Robert Moore (.198 AVG, .676 OPS in 105 PAs) hit 2 doubles yesterday as he works out of his personal hitting funk.

Clayton Andrews struggling with the command again today. Getting behind in the count almost every AB.

Per wiguy94’s post, it’s LHP Clayton Andrews (1.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 14.0 K/9 in 9.2 IP) who’s gotten the spot start in the second game of Nashville’s doubleheader in St. Paul. RF Eddy Alvarez homered in the opener, lifting his season AVG to .361 and OPS to 1.095.

1 - Monasterio - 2B
2 - Alvarez - RF
3 - Singleton - 1B
4 - Hiura - LF
5 - Toro - DH
6 - Devanney - SS
7 - Dorrian - 3B
8 - Diaz - C
9 - Harrison - CF
X - Andrews - P
