To be honest, Matt Wise OR de la Rosa might have to move to the 5th spot, with Capuano becoming the #3 starter and Obermueller/Glover going to the 4th spot.

I like him a lot. Sutcliffe is nearly unbearable, though... egads he's annoying.

 

I still think Santos deserves a chance to pitch in the rotation but I'm not real confident that he'll duplicate what he did in the first half of 2004. I agree with Clancy (I assume) that both Matt Wise and JDLR should be competing for a rotation spot and should be at the top of the list (along with Lil' Ben) if/when the team needs a sixth or seventh starter.

I am sure they will give Santos his two more starts this spring before they make any adjustments and perhaps as they did last year, allow him to fail into the season ala Kinney.

 

But as long as Obermueller and Glover continue to do well, they have alternatives. Since being 3 or 4 doesn't really matter, sticking another righthander between Davis and Capuano should not be a problem.

Yup. I'm in favor of Wise at this point - he has started in the past, and he's had success. The curve also seems to be coming back, too.

JohnBriggs: You make excellent points about "dead arm" this time of spring. It's one of those easily forgotten things that many pitchers experience as they stretch their arms out in preparation for the season. (Sorry about the four prepositional phrases in a row.) I also think it's a good idea to keep the rotation righty, lefty, righty, lefty, and 5th guy to be determined as needed for the first couple months. Gotta keep the opposing batters on their toes.

 

I also think that you and others are right with your opinion that starters may not have as much time to work things out if things don't go well for them when the season starts. More competition for the rotation slots naturally will make that happen. I'm just glad we don't have to experience another Ruben Quevedo scenario for as long as that went on...who's with me?!

Moeller - Unbelievalbe , Chad hits a deep fly ball that takes a weird hope off of the batter's eye in center and kicks all the way over to right field. Moeller trys for a inside the parker, but is tagged out after the relay throw skips by the catcher, but is picked up by pitcher backing the play up. Chad didn't slide and ended up being tagged out before touching the plate.

In watching the game on TV, I don't know for sure but Santos velocity looked just fine, it was his location that he struggled with. I don't know if the dead arm argument holds water in his case

I want to wait to see if Santos turns to dust in the regular season before we try and put a stake through his heart. I think his first half success has earned that. If he fails, we have Glover, Wise, Lil' Ben, Obie and maybe even DLR waiting to take his place.

regarding santos, im sure his spot entering the season is safe, but I also think he could lose that spot real fast if he struggles bigtime when the "real" season starts. At least this year there are some options.

 

DeLa is really showing me he has turned the corner a bit and could end up taking over if Santos struggles badly, moving cap to the 3rd spot and Obie as the 4th.

LV...the first thing to go when experiencing dead arm is location...velocity is next. It's only called dead arm after its proven velocity is lost because velocity is measurable, whereas location is a tricky bugger. The time between loss of location and loss of velocity is the denial time period for the pitcher. If he's a competitor, he's gonna deny at first that his arm is tired...human nature. It's very common for starting pitchers to hit the wall two weeks before the season starts because that's when the stretching out in earnest begins. The only way to know for certain is if the pitcher is being honest to his coaches and then if the coaches in turn are honest in telling the media.

 

Vic didn't pitch all winter under the advisement of the Brewer brass. He hasn't had that kind of time off in his career. My educated guess is dead arm, until he and the coaches say otherwise...that is unless he really really sucks then that theory is all shot to heck!

Is it just me, or are the brewers doing rather terrible in bases loaded situations this spring? I don't have any stats to back this up, but that's two games in a row where they've grounded into a double play. Gotta get more than one run in these scenarios.
