while I like this look, I have to once again point out that it's supposed to be statistically proven that if you selected batting order by drawing names out of a hat, they'd produce similarly to the "ideal" lineup.

 

Plus, JANelson, can it get any worse? why not try experimenting with things.

Hey, the Cardinals have Edmonds in the 5 hole. They aren't that much better than the Brewers on offense.

some observations through 6.1:

 

-Sheets looks solid tonight

 

-Marquis looks awesome. Some pitchers appear "good" because of us, but he looks outstanding tonight.

 

-Ump has a big strikezone both on the corners and up high.

 

-Overbay with a terrible hop at first

 

-Pods' hit and Helms' hit were both close to being outs

 

-looks like Jenks' should have caught that one...must have been wind

yes, he's facing arguably the best lineup in baseball, and they scratched out 2 runs early, had one good homer, and then got lucky by having a hard hit grounder right at Overbay, only to have a terrible hop. Bad hops happen, but Ben only allowed 3 runs, the field allowed the other. Hence why I made my statement

I have only seen Jason Marquis pitch a few times before tonight and didn't realize how much of a groundball pitcher he is. Among qualified starters in all of baseball, he is sixth in groundball/flyball ratio at 2.32, behind Brandon Webb (3.74), Derek Lowe (3.20), Jake Westbrook (2.68) , Roy Halladay (2.42), and Tim Hudson (2.39).

 

That's really impressive. How 'bout Webb and Lowe, though? They're on a whole 'nother planet in terms of inducing groundballs, although neither has been successful this year.

 

Marquis is also only 25 (he'll be 26 in late August). The Cardinals gave up a lot in JD Drew and Eli Marrero, but the combo of Ray King and Marquis is certainly a nice return.
