Breakdown / Highlights
On the heels of a seven-game winning streak, Milwaukee took a trip to Cincinnati in hopes of pushing that streak towards the fabled twelve. They’d get one closer on Monday with a 3-2 win, getting 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball from Aaron Civale and 3 2/3 scoreless from the bullpen. The reigning NL player of the week, Christian Yelich, was the difference maker, though, with a go-ahead solo home run in the third.
Unfortunately, the winning streak would end on Tuesday, as Hunter Greene would win the pitchers' duel against Freddy Peralta. It wasn’t without dramatic flair, as down to their last out against Emilio Pagan, Jake Bauers sent a ball over the Great American Ballpark Fence in center field, only to have the game-tying homer pulled back by TJ Friedl. The Brewers would have the last laugh on Wednesday, capturing the series in emphatic fashion with a 9-1 victory. It was the DL Hall and Quinn Priester combo, eating eight innings for the Brewers once again, while Jackson Chourio recorded three hits and Daz Cameron notched his first Brewer home run in that win.
And thus began the longest homestand of the year, with a whimper. San Diego would march into American Family Field to blank the Brewers' offense in game one on Friday. Chad Patrick did turn in six innings of one-run ball, but in the end, Milwaukee fell 2-0.
The pesky Brewers bounced back to open the pair of weekend games, finally coming out on top in a late back-and-forth game to win 4-3, and even the series. José Quintana was good for the Brewers once again, striking out four in 5 innings of work, allowing only one run. Trevor Megill did blow his first save since April 12th, but Caleb Durbin bailed him out by hitting his first career walk-off homer in the ninth.
The bats would go quiet again in the rubber match, as the Padres staff limited the Brewers to just three hits the following day. Freddy Peralta threw six scoreless innings in the loss, including a no-hitter he carried in the 5th inning. Still, a seventh-inning home run via Manny Machado was all the Padres needed to capture the series.
